Headless Client for SinglePlayer???
chrisb replied to ZackTactical34's topic in ARMA 3 - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Not really no. Just know your systems limits. All players have a limit based on their own system. AI will drain your system quite a lot, if you want intelligent AI. I know players use HC for MP, it helps. But for SP, with the system you have, I'd say its not really needed. Just experiment, you'll find the limits pretty quickly. ;) Use cache scripts/mods, although I think you can do that in A3 using the already available tools in the editor (not sure, I don't play A3 much now), you could do that earlier in the alpha build IIRC. So just to clarify.. You don't need to meet 500 ai, all at once. :) -
Game Freezes And Reboots Pc
chrisb replied to Jeff Jaffy Johnson's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Are you sure your pc hasn't reverted back to your onboard graphics card, after the gpu change ie; not the 1060. The one that came standard with the pc, not as an extra, gpu wise. Because I can't think of a reason why it would close down. -
No man's sky. Huge procedurally generated universe

I find it remarkable that I'm the first living thing to see these places, just adds to the enjoyment. Also seeing what the PG comes up with, so varied, yes there is replication, but there is in life itself, so its to be expected. But the different landscapes I've seen are pretty incredible and a big plus in the gaming world and a credit to HG, for me at least. But as you say, its each to their own.. Edit: and don't forget mods, of course. There are some very good ones out there. -

That isn't what exploration is.. Tribes have been found that we knew nothing of (IRL). Exploring was what found them, its not that they weren't there. So many players just didn't get NMS, as in, understand what they were buying. That was the main problem. The game was going to be all about exploration, or mainly as SM originally said a few years back, very early on. Of course they have made it mainstream friendly now, that is a great shame. -

Not sure what that means.. People explore things that have already been seen or inhabited, the exploration is from your side i.e. its new to you.. __ Anyway with a little over 830 planets visited, of which 750'ish are gone (replaced I assume) following the last update, I've been back into NMS. The thing with this game is the beauty, if you like the art style.. Its changed a little and not for the better. But it is still a great game to get lost in. I ignore the new stuff they added and just potter around exploring. There are empty barren planets, but you will always find the sentinels, they're very easy to pot shot and cause very little frustration. Part of the game is to find out why they're there. Not that I'm really bothered they are, just nice to potter around. Very few games have the freedom; space, planet surface, caves and underwater. Its still good, although somewhat less so than it was when released. Still, its worth going back too, very refreshing in fact. I do wish they would have left it alone and just improved on the original concept rather than pander to moaning players. Unfortunately the moaners out numbered the few players that understood what they were buying. Nevermind. -
Is it Christmas already.. No, that was yesterday. Happy Boxing day. ;)

I watched the video, well some of it. Not sure he really gets Arma... As comparing Arma to Squad (I don't own squad, but did follow progress for a while). Its like comparing an encyclopedia to a pamphlet. I'll let those that read work out which is which..

I think the seed is 20yrs old now, well the initial work in all seriousness began back then. This is before the company was company, before even the name of the game was mentioned, only in code perhaps, maybe not even that at the start. The series, for me and many others, is the ultimate in military gaming, no other game comes close, not even within radar distance. This is the only game to go too, if realism in military gaming is what your looking for (well as near as a pc can produce). I don't like A3 much, but that is just my view, for me its still got to be A2 + all the dlc's and heavily modded. One thing that this series has delivered on is game-play realism, if you have the right friends to play the game with, or indeed, play it sp (modded). I don't play the campaigns, I never have, it wasn't why I got into the game in the first place. I/we just wanted something that could give us the excitement and enjoyment we got from the games we were already playing. The games we were playing back then and from the mid 70's were military/strategy board games, then board/pc games. We could build missions in those and build a whole military gaming world, it relied heavily on imagination, but we had plenty of that (still have). Some pc games had tried, but none came as close as this series. Then came along ofp, o.k. it was interesting, but not enough to pull us away from something we had almost, nailed ourselves too :/ But I watched with interest, tried to convince others in my circles, that we could do something with the editor of this game. Anyway it took until Arma, to have my friends onboard. That is when the true nature of this game started to really dawn on us as a group of friends and players. This was actually a pc game you could do more with than we even previously thought possible. Such so , that it replaced much of the imagination we had to use, to get that feeling from previous games. There it was onscreen, a full on military gaming world, of our own making (Editor). We were and still are, blown away by that. Nothing comes close to that feeling in gaming and its all down to the editor for me/us. Not the campaigns or whatever else. Just that editor and the hours in there that I, and many of my friends, have spent, plus enjoyed every minute, even those frustrating ones. The editor, where dreams are made. The topic's title.. ' arma is a cool idea, but doesn't work'................................... Well sorry, it works and delivers like no other game made in this genre, certainly for me and my friends and players I know. It delivers in, well.. 'bucket filled delight'.. Its a shame it doesn't work for you, but I can only put that down to the fact you may not have immersed yourself in the editor and made that world your dreaming about. Yes, you have to forgive things, many things. But just forgive those things, every game has something wrong with it, there are no real 'perfect' games around. This series has more than its fair share of problems, I'll point many out... No, posts too long already. But I/we forgave everything the game was bad at, because it was good at all the things we needed it to be good at. It excelled in so many things and to think its 20yrs or so for those at the start and coming upto 20yrs for many of the players that play (well not that far away). Its not only a good idea, its a 'stunningly' great idea, that just won't really be matched again. I'm speaking from an A2 + dlc's standpoint. Others have thier own view and benchmarks. But most of us will agree, the game was a brilliant idea and even more than that, it was and still is, a game that stands alone, despite its flaws of which there are many. No other game comes close to this series, for me, from any genre. It still stands the test of time. That editor, was a stroke of pure genius. (for me, the older editor, that is ;) ) Edit: Oh and just to add.. It isn't a game, its a hobby.. ;)

Wow, there are so many. The main thing to sort out, if you can, takes a lot of testing, is the ai. If your playing sp or coop against ai, then it's a must really. I got past all that a few years back now. But I left one vid up of the little over 300 I originally had, unlisted now, that shows some of what can be done with ai using (publically) available ai mods. Its only my view, so you may not like the results, many do and many don't. Its not a bad place to start 'ai'. But difficult to get working the way you want. GL4, SLX, Zeus (the ai mod), SMK anims, st collision & evasive. Well its hard to go back and think about it all. These mods have to be mixed to get better results. It's not the conventional theory that you should mix mods, but I found it much better, the ai are much more believeable. Also folk will tell you things aren't supported anymore, its true, but they still work, if you test with others or changing little parts yourself. Units, aircraft, armour, weapons, tac, etc, is personal choice really. Armaholic is a good place to start from. Just look around and see what you think you need or want. There are vast amounts of mod/addons on there (AH) and out there (google). Ace2 is good if you don't have access to a more advanced type of mod. But its all there in other mods and addons, its just brought together quite well in ace. Don't rely on ace for ai. Sound, well acex (ace), JSRS, Vop, PSM etc, there are many more. Armaholic again, just try them out see which you like. I use in the video... not sure now :/, I think it was acex or it could even be vanilla. Can't remember. I use a lot of mods that are group mods (not publically available). If you get into a good group they're likely to use some of their own stuff. I know its not very helpful, but mods are very much a personal preference, just try them and see. For the ai, I'll put back up a vid I have on the channel. I don't really use the channel much now for public mods. But I have one there somewhere. Give me a few days to get it sorted. GL4 is the main mod to use and if you make missions, you have to use the GL4 format, there are details in the mod DL (Armaholic). GL4 can break some missions that are not made using that format, so beware. If your not into making missions, then ASR is good enough and shouldn't break much. I haven't used ASR, only for testing, so don't really know much about it, other than it wasn't the behaviour I wanted from the ai. A mention of terrains/islands. There are a huge number (hundreds) available and out there. But again AH is a good start, so worth a good look through. Every terrain, in my view, is worth a look.. Some you'll use much more than others, but they're all great in their own ways. We have to be thankful to those that put all this content out there. Arma is one of the few games that has a dedicated community, here and in other places. Some of the groups that surround this series, are very serious about the game and content, so worth looking around for one of those groups. Not rank type things, although some/many like that. But groups that play well together and value each member plus play the same way. Arma is best played either sp or with like-minded people. Standard MP is a minefield, best left alone. ;) Just a footnote to all that. A3 has better aircraft, as in flight model.. (not driving, its bad in A3) But... The ai can't use that too well, so yes, better for the player in the aircraft, but for those on the ground, if ai are around using aircraft/vehicles.. Not so much. The ai in A2 use all the available content better, imo than A3's ai. When modded, they use it even moreso. Blimey, I rarely come on here and write anything this long now.. ;)

We all have our own views. Nothing wrong with that. ;)

A.I. Edit: feel I have to expand on that. Everything you mention other than shooting from vehicles, although in A2 they shoot correctly from the positions they're supposed too, oh and graphics too, if glossy is what your after, yes A3 is better, but I like the feel of A2 environments, they feel real (to me). Weapon resting, animation, stances, sound, inventory/gear (easily done in A2) etc were/are all in A2, plus the most important thing for me 'AI', even with the older (available) AI mods are better in A2. No idea regards the mods you mention other than Ace, I used ace in A2 occasionally , but it only contains what can be found in other mods and better sometimes. Its all in A2, infact some modders tried to make A3 back into A2, because they can't go back because graphics are more important to them. That's fine, nothing wrong with that. But when the player base want the game to resemble the previous version, then something is wrong. Most of the playerbase in A2 didn't want it to resemble Arma and certainly not OFP (perhaps in campaign, but I don't play the campaigns). So yes, I would like to see A4 return more to simulation. But really I don't care much about A4, it will likely be a good few years before it arrives and by then I could be too old to play the game.. ;)
-
Not that I would want to use 'cup', but why would I.. Its the whole feel of the game, the environments etc. That, along with great mods, is what makes A2OA+all the dlc's, head and shoulders above A3. That is only my opinion, others are welcome to theirs. ;) I have played persistent war-game terrains in both titles, but unfortunately it only really works for me in A2. That is because of the mods, the look, the feel, the immersiveness, the armour, the aircraft, the unit variety, the weather, the sound, the feeling the terrain is alive............... Well you get the idea..
-
For me Arma 2 can look incredible, just needs tweaking around to get the look that suits your preference. A2 has a much grittier look (in a very good way), A3 is glossed a little too much for me. But that said, A3 does look very good and in many ways (sea), much better than A2. But I love A2 too much to move on for a few extra frillies. ;) A2 was marketed as a mil-sim, whereas A3 is a military sandbox. You work out the difference. I think A2 feels much more mil-sim, but that is with quite a few mods included and depends greatly on how you play the game and even the people you play the game with (no ranks and that nonsense, but team work play). I haven't really bothered with A3 that much to say really. For me A2 will not be beaten, which is a shame, but on the other hand, we do have it. :) I haven't stopped playing A2OA + all the dlc's. I still play every week, although not as much as I used too.

German Assault Addons - Army

Thank you. Also thanks for still supporting the best Arma in the series so far. Just my view of course. ;) -

Is BIS going to still developing Arma 3 after Tanks DLC?
chrisb replied to esfumato's topic in ARMA 3 - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Never liked A3 much, but that was more down to available mods for ai. I don't think A4 (if there is to be another in the series), will be as good as A2+dlc's and the right mods. Yes A3, & no doubt A4, do/will look better and movement etc is/will be more advanced, although the A3 movement in early release was terrible (imo). But A4 would have to go some to beat A2 (modded). I also think A4 might be set in a different time, possibly the past (take your pick). I will watch keenly the progress should there be a teaser/announcement or whatever. But graphics have never really been my thing, just good gameplay and a very good 'advanced' ai system. Give me that and I'm happy. But I'm fairly sure the ai part of that, is no longer going to happen for any vanilla game, in this series. Focus has gone right over to mp, which is a great shame. Anyway, the series has given me uncountable hours of enjoyment over a great number of years, so I remain a fan and always will. But I'll only spend again, if its worth it. There-again, if it is moddable and has an editor, chances are, it'll be worth it. ;) -
Shame its going to the lesser game. :(

Children in Arma, yeah why not.. Give us something to shoot at while we wait around. As for women, they're already shooting us in A2..

No man's sky. Huge procedurally generated universe
chrisb replied to dontknowhow's topic in OFFTOPIC - Games & Gaming
So wow.. I come to this with a heavy heart.. The new update is great for the game.. Not so much for any players that played the game for the last year, the way the game was intended, or it seems that may have changed too. They reset the game, when I say reset, its a partial reset But the reset took away the most important part for me... 'Exploration' and indeed some of the original art style.. All planets that I discovered.. are gone.. replaced with new planets and new names. Dates have all gone, so not worth exploring this last year in NMS.. So disappointed. Forced restart.. Not sure now... :( Massively disappointed they went with the moaners and changed the game style from exploring to, well, not sure now. Why explore, when they may just reset again a year down the road.. I expect it from Alpha or Beta games. But this was a fully released title... -
Neat little game, fun and easy to pick up.. https://cosmoteer.net/

Old thread, I know. But as I played 'Prime' I thought I would put this up. It is being played at the moment 'limited', looks good. I'm not playing it yet, but will wait for release proper.. Frozen Synapse 2 Worth a look.: Plus one more, not added to their playlist yet: number 29

Hidden and Dangerous 1/2 are available for purchase again!
chrisb replied to sic-disaster's topic in OFFTOPIC - Games & Gaming
Yes seriously.. Forget the graphics, they mean little to me, not sure about others, its the game play that matters. So yes, all these early graphics are great to me, I started playing SL/ASL, which is 'in your mind graphics'.. So anything visual, is great.. But these types of games (H&D etc) died, 'for me', when this series came along and I'd learnt to manage the editor. The editor with all its possibilities. When some really good ai mods came along soon after, it just cemented that feeling. Never looked back at any of these games after that. So yes, for me, a good game for its time. Good memories, not many, but there were some. P.S. When I say early graphics, these are really late graphics (for me I suppose) and stand very well, but i'd play any really early game (lets go back decades), if the game play stands up..
