I would expect A3 to be more popular. BI put effort into make the game more accessible for a wider range of players. I think it did what it was meant to do. A2 on the other hand was really the last of the ‘niche’ the series had, it looks like that, to me anyway. Dayz helped BI out tremendously I would imagine. It brought players that weren’t into mil-sim style gaming into the series and with that, the whole ‘Life’ side of the game sprang up too, plus the other formats hanging around. All the different games that can be made/played with the sandbox is great. It gives the title/series more legs, certainly that a niche player-base (however fond of the series) could ever do (financially wise). So the series or format continues. That said, all the players/groups I know still use A2OA, but that is because of mods that are only available for the title. Plus there are a few other things concerning A3, that keep some players back from moving on. That may change though for some players later if things in the game change. I think, now the niche has gone, a lot of that player-base went with it, or stayed in previous titles. But that is always the case, isn’t it. I don’t really care which is more popular. The only thing that matters to each player, is whether or not they like the title they are playing. If your happy with that, then who cares about numbers.

Try getting into a mil-sim group. Many groups I know use their own ai mods. The ai there, are far from being dumb bots. Plus @amanzo puts it correctly. Think to yourself, would you like to do the mundane, or any of the players you know... Not knowing if you'll even be needed. Its a completely different game, when played within a good group.. or SP when played in an immersive way. Either of these ways are great, using a very good ai mod. _ Regards the topic.. ai and trees. Just have them hug one, after that they'll be fine. Vanilla ai could seem very tactical when there are lots of trees around. That's mainly because you can't see what they're upto.

Nice.. :)

Christmas of 95 or could have been 96. I bought my son a PlayStation, subsequently shortly after that I bought the PS Doom version for him to play on it. He really enjoyed it, so I bought a second PS and we hooked up (me on the portable tv, and him on the main lounge tv) and had many great hours hunting each other down. My daughter joined in, ended up the whole family was doom players including the wife. Good memories. Did the same with F1, playing hooked up. That said. Having to have two of everything.. It wasn't a cheap way to do things.

Played it in the 90's. Not sure I need to play it again. No.. to be more specific, I'm sure I don't need to play it again. It was good the first time around though. ;)

A2/A2:OA beta CorePatch 01.03.2016
chrisb replied to Dwarden's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - BETA PATCH TESTING
Just wondering what happened to the ambient civilians, animals & vehicles. Can't seem to get them working. ?? Edit: I pottered around a village for a while and the best I got were 5 chickens.. Now there's egg's and a few Sunday lunches there, but little else. It was a very lonely place, no one to talk too and no vehicles to pinch. Sad really. :( Further edit: After more testing the modules do work in some places. But I'm getting Chernarus civilians in Takistan. Now I know they may be on holiday/vacation there. But seeing the excellent red Chernarus tractor (which I love driving around) drive through the main street of one Takistan town, does seem a little odd. Of course it could be a wise investment by a local farmer. How he got the money together to buy it though, that needs investigating. -
Operation Arrowhead performance optimizations/comparisons
chrisb replied to jpinard's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
The thing about any pc desktop/laptop. They're made for different reasons, some are great at everyday stuff, as Mireks points out. Other's, on the other hand, may not be made for that and more geared towards gaming. With Arma you really need a pc that is geared towards gaming a little more. Because Arma is one of those games that needs that extra.. well. umph.. on the gaming side. Not a technical post, but the nearest I could get, for now. A pc to run this series doesn't have to be really expensive, just thought out well. Hope you get to play at some stage, on a different system. :) -
Arma 3 2DEditor and you! Please leave feedback!
chrisb replied to Repetence's topic in ARMA 3 - GENERAL
I don't play A3, just mess around occasionally testing stuff. I much prefer the 2D editor. But I can see that for new players and those that don't use the editor much, that the 3D version is very handy. I still use the 2D when messing around in A3, tried the 3D, its good, but wasn't for me really. That said, its probably that working in the editor for soo long, makes it harder to change, get set in your ways, for some at least. I still would have preferred the effort go into more important things concerning A3, but there you go. Just glad they haven't decided to put it into A2.. ;) -
Survival games don't usually interest me. But the way they are making this and the detail they're putting into it, makes me think it will be a really tactical survival game. Which sounds very inviting. I possibly still won't pre-order, but I think I'll be buying it for sure. Nice change to Arma.

I won't bother explaining what I mean to you. Obviously your not looking at it in the same way I am. __ I am, don't worry, I wouldn't think to speak for you.

I like it. But it wasn't something we were desperate for in the vanilla game.

My previous AMD was a 640 with a 5850 2gb card. Now moving over to an i7 didn't double my frame rate, although did obviously improve it. However it made me able to use many more AI without cache, which was nice. That said, I still have to use cache, but a good quality one is not that much of a problem. I would add, I didn't have any problems with the AMD, other than there was a restriction on AI numbers, without cache 250-300 on a terrain, with cache, well many more obviously.

Very naïve. Just sit and think about it for a while. Now I'm not saying and didn't say, as it happens, that the people doing the editor would be the same ones doing the much more skilled, AI work. But that doesn't mean to say that, the time couldn't have been spent doing just what I said. Business is business and it does depend on where that business has its priorities. Now I know BI doesn't have its priorities in AI (well not anymore), so I wouldn't expect it to change. However I said that, I just couldn't help thinking that 'if', the effort was put into the AI, that was put into the new editor.. Although that is what I wrote, had you read it properly. That said. BI won't do it, I know and I can see why they wouldn't do it, from a business point of view. Lets be honest, producing a high quality game 'from the back', is hard. Putting polish at the front, is what most players see and appreciate 'unfortunately'. But that is those players. But it pains me to think they could. But of course there is little money in things that the majority of players your now aiming at, wouldn't see or appreciate. Because the game no longer attracts those players. Did it ever really attract many of those players anyway, I'm not so sure. Perhaps not that many saw the potential after all. I'm sure the pioneering few that started BI did, but struggle can hit hard and when eventually you find out that really there are few people that will see and enjoy the potential in the same way. Then you start to lose faith yourself. Then something comes along that brings in the income. 'The vision', then gives way to income (of course, happens in many businesses). BI have done it the business way, chase the income. I completely agree with that, in part, from a business point of view (I did the same for a while). However, I am viewing this from a players point of view, a certain player-base, perhaps on the whole, lost to BI now.

Well I'll be the party pooper then.. Just being a visitor to the A3 shores and using the new editor a couple of times. Now I can see that players, especially new players, may find this better, be able to achieve more with it. This obviously is good for them and the games progression into the area it wants to be. But.. I can't help thinking that the effort that was put into this, could have been put into the woeful AI. Now I say woeful, in context of the Arma world, not comparing it to other games. We all know, or most of us know, that the Arma AI is very good when compared to other games that have a large open world to have to deal with, plus everything they have to do within that world. But it could/can be so much better. This is more to do with why this editor could perhaps have been avoided. Have an AI that knows what its supposed to do, simple things like garrison buildings, find cover better than it does, sharing info across the whole faction and not just simply with their own team mates. Having the ability to call in the right type/amount of help and assistance (infantry, air, armour, sea), hear what is happening around them properly and reacting accordingly, drive in convoy.. Etc.. Its all there in modded AI, why not vanilla. Its great that players can place AI units much more precisely without having to put anything in an init field and keep popping in and out of the game to see its done correctly. But its sort of pointless without an AI that will then know what to do after being placed in such a great position. It's just if.. All the effort that was put into this editor, was put into the AI instead. Thus leaving the editor as it was for now. Its a good editor for the new player to get into. But it just pushes aside what is really needed. That is a really good vanilla AI system, which A3 doesn't have, even when looking into modded AI, its very hard to get very good AI for A3. Arma is going more into the 'Life' mode and less towards the mil/sim style, SP or coop against AI player. The AI are getting little to no work. I know they keep tweaking, but really its all around the edges. I go into A3 occasionally and still see a, when compared to very good A2 modded AI, very poor vanilla AI. BI, put the time into AI, or perhaps just admit its of little to no concern to the game anymore. Whereas a 'flashy' editor is really needed.. Of course.. I know.. deaf ears..

Bumping my own post here (one post back). Still waiting to see if this alleged problem is AMD. I didn't expect many if any players would be having this problem. Its looking more like its an individual problem now.

Thanks for looking at that. Regards the colour. Yes I do like the burnt sand look, so I always up the colours somewhat.. I know its not to everyone's liking, but I prefer it much better. Thanks again, I'll look forward to the new update. Its a great terrain. :)

Just a quick thing. I came across this whilst looking at the new update: (lampposts just in this section, so far, are in the middle of a traffic lane. This is near the Eilat airport ). http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l538/triopalite/A2/ArmA2OA%202016-02-23%2012-12-04-408_zps1oznzwtj.jpg http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l538/triopalite/A2/ArmA2OA%202016-02-23%2012-12-10-479_zpsgcqg6ed9.jpg This could be a mod conflict at my end, but could someone just have a quick look. It would help me out, as it would mean me working through many mods, if it is a conflict. Thanks.

Thanks for the update s@ndbob. Your work/terrain is very much appreciated.

Configuring AI to use Grenades and RPGs against Infantry
chrisb replied to fiestamasta's topic in ARMA 3 - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
If your playing the campaign or missions made by other people, then you may have a problem getting them to use smoke, h/grendes, rifle mounted grenades, rpg, plant explosives etc. However if your making your own missions/scenarios, try using GL5, it will help with some of that type of thing (not all). That said, you'll not get the results that you'll get in A2 (modded), just that there is a lack of other AI mods in A3, that you could mix and use, that would help out with that type of play. AI will use all these things, plus others, including flame throwers, throwing back grenades that land near them etc. etc. If they have it they'll use it, but you'll need a mod to get them doing it, unfortunately. NB: GL5 will not work well with all missions/campaigns. It is best used when you make your own missions, with the mod in mind i.e. as the base format (if you like). -

chrisb replied to falconsan's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
I downloaded the terrain. Its very detailed and really well done. I've enjoyed the parts I've seen, which is only a small part so far. Didn't see any fuel stations so far, just wondered are there many on the terrain ? Thanks for releasing it and your very detailed work. Its going to be a really nice terrain to use for A2. :) -

Nice to see this here. I know its for Dayz primarily, but I use Sauerland for A2 and enjoy it (plus the winter version). Some nice area to use and a very good terrain. I'll give this a look too when your more complete. Good luck with progress and thanks for letting the forum know about your WIP. ;) Rugen.. I think PMC has a Rugen terrain, I have it somewhere on a HDD.
