  1. You misunderstand. You can make a detailed animation in any engine. Even Minecraft. So your videos, which you posted like they were some sort of retort, are pointless.

I posted those particular videos to demonstrate some CryEngine 3 capabilities, they seem well suited to the topic of dismounted infantry simulation using CryEngine 3. In my personal opinion they make VBS2 animations seem rather outdated.

  2. It is is a game. Or simulator, or whatever. In the training of soldiers, it serves the purpose of a game, and nothing more..

Sorry perhaps I should have clarified. What I mean is that it won't be available to gamers, it is strictly a military training tool.

I have seen the AI in Unreal Tournament move and behave like that indoors.

Have you seen VBS2 AI move and behave like that indoors?

  3. DSTS is not using CryEngine anymore. They quickly switched to VBS2.

Your confused. The Army is currently using VBS2 for Dismounted Soldier Training System, but at the moment Intelligent Decisions are spearheading development of a newer version of the Dismounted Soldier Training System that will use CryEngine 3 to enhance training fidelity and realism. Realtime Immersive is working alongside AVT Simulations to create the databases.

  4. How are high fidelity animations not eyecandy? Soldiers practice 'animations' in real life, not a game.

First let me point out that the new Dismounted Soldier Training System is not a game. Intelligent Decisions have already stated that one of the goals of the new DSTS is to provide the Army with a fully immersive environment with a sense of realism. Have you not noticed some of the shoddy VBS2 animations, particularly when turning on the spot?

And what did the AI demonstrate in that video?.

Have you ever seen multiple BIS AI move and behave like that indoors?

Any player would have shot them to pieces when they take the blind corners, split up and spray while running.

The test scenario in the video was created in the free sandbox editor that comes with Crysis 2 by a casual gamer. Professional simulation studios are currently using the same technology to work on the new DSTS.

  5. I couldn't find any other threads about this game so sorry if repost.

The gameplay isn't my cup of tea but the graphics are absolutely stunning, the map reminds me of wartorn Beirut during the civil war. Hopefully in a few years technology will allow us to play on huge ARMA size maps with similar graphics.

  6. I noticed that Intelligent Decisions mentioned the new DSTS would include features such as atmospheric light propogation, light scattering, movie-quality scene lighting, expressions for fear, anger and aggression and visual elements such as footprints and disturbed soil and grass.

Perhaps it could be useful for IED detection training?

  7. Except, as I already said, VBS has been doing it independantly of the DSTS for more than a year (if not 2) now, so this is neither anything new nor exciting....

Personally I think the CryEngine 3 graphics quality is exeptionally good and that is why I posted the video, perhaps this is the graphical quality we can expect to see in the new Dismounted Soldier Training System?

Iv'e noticed that some very well known companies such as Cubic Defense Applications and AVT simulation were demonstrating the CryENGINE 3 engine at I/ITSEC 2011 during November and December, AVT simulation is currently working on the Dismounted Soldier Training System.

  8. So CryEngine allows soldiers to fire their weapons with HUGEASS MUZZLE FLASHES thus far? Impressive

That VBS2 has nothing on it?

The video is a real-time motion capture demonstration using Cryengine, it's not the Dismounted Soldier Training System so no point comparing it to VBS2.

It's like no matter what they do with CryEngine it still shouts "I'm an arcade game" at you through all those purely hollywoodish details?

So far Realtime Immersive Inc. haven't stated that any of the technology demonstrations showcasing the CryEngine software development kit contain footage of the new Dismounted Soldier Training System, keep in mind that Realtime Immersive Inc. support many different CryEngine Lisensees in the simulation market.

I think it would be prudent to wait until we actually see the new Dismounted Soldier Training System in action before we can compare it to VBS2.

  9. If it was going to be deployed next month, surely they would have been showing a cryEngine based demo at I/ITSEC last month, and not something running VBS2? (That article is from May, I/ITSEC showing VBS2 based DSTS was in November, deployment is in January... Just sayin...)

Like I said before, it all seems suspiciously like the Army has been sucked in by the shiny graphics, spent millions on the project, only to be told at the end of it that the cryEngine cant do what they want it to, so they've switched back to good ole VBS... just like they did last time with the $40 million [failed] cryEngine project...

"PEO STRI is looking for a system that offers everything VBS2 does, plus higher fidelity graphics and the ability for it to be plugged into a combined live, virtual and constructive training environment through the use of personal computers and other mobile devices.

Intelligent Decisions plans to be a major player in this effort as it already has shown the ability to run the VBS2 software on the Dismounted Soldier system."

  10. Floyd West, Director of Strategic Programs, Orlando Division of Intelligent Decisions said that Cryengine 3 is the best video game technology on the market today. 102 combat simulation systems will be using this advanced combat simulation in combination with advanced motion sensor technology globally by January 2012.

  11. unless some really advanced renderer used then i fear that could be quite misleading as e.g. correct tonemapping (shades of grey, colors) is often doom of many resulting pics ...

Marines at Camp Lejeune helped develop some of these games, one is used for Scout Sniper training. IMHO the graphics are actually inferior to those in ARMA 2 but the lighting is pretty good.

  12. I thought the idea for simulation was a cheaper way to get familiar with equipment, tactics and so on before employing them in the real world. A bit like flight simulators that pilots go through..I didn't realise we were becoming "VR soldiers"

The military is starting to use computer simulations to teach observational skills, for example soldiers must find the differences between 2 scenes in a short amount of time, each time a new scene is displayed the soldiers are given less time to spot differences.
