    PMC P-1.57 Extra Missions

Just to Reinforce the point, from the Press Release: Infiltration: Sneak under the cover of darkness to destroy a rocket artillery test site. Reaction: Battle through the mist to recover missing clients. Provision: Take to the air to deliver a crucial cargo drop for UN troops in central Takistan. Showcase: Enjoy the diversity of the PMC faction in a showcase mission. Enjoy! RiE

    Whats next?

You know, we were close to adding an SP mission about old Tricky Dickie's past; unfortunately, it had to be dropped as it was far too complex (mainly to test). :butbut: Instead, you guys have the SP mission Provision. Mmm, procedural gameplay, tasty. Now, no smart-alec comments complaining about that not being tested. :p Best, RiE

    Reviews and Revenues

The latest edition of Game Developer Magazine, (August, 2010, $3.95), brings up the age old relationship betweeen review scores and sales. This time, taking a - vey small - study of a - very particular - game, Plants vs.Zombies, and demonstrating that, given the choice between recieving $10 and getting a free copy of the game, participants exposed to positive reviews were 85% more likely to to take the game, and 121% more likely to take the game than those exposed to negative reviews. "The EEDAR/SMU study posits that the relationship between video game sales and profession revuew scores are not correlative but causal." So, particularly in light of the paradigm shifts in print journalism and the explosion of digitial reviews, do you still value an arbitrary 'score' from a 'professional' highly? Or are other influences more important? Do you even take notice of the games press - printed or otherwise? RiE

Arma II & OA User Video Thread

You managed to create a clear feeling, and were able to sustain it over a not-inconsiderable time-span, which is challenging. Somehow, the lack of music in the opening reminded me of ... (but, really, I'm just a massive fan-boy so you can probably ignore that :p).A couple of tips: the HDR effects (for example when his hands are 'shining' bright white), can be solved by tweaking the in-game aperture. This will create a more consistent presentation of the luminosity of reflective or white surfaces where the level of black in the scene is heavy, or reducing the glow/ flicker when the black is dynamic. If, however, the high contrast is just what your looking for, you can add it back in afterwards in PP by, say, tweaking the luma curves. Speaking of which, overall, you might think about adding subtle PP effects. Generally, I dislike aggressive PP tweaking, and sometimes its just best left well alone, but it can draw the eye more naturally into the scene. Best, RiE

  10. Well, at least part of your Christmas wish may well indeed have been fixed - though it seems like it didn't make it onto Arma Claus' list (aka changelog). My elves tell me that you should be able to take over control of the lead vehicle when you want, and select to re-enable the automatic route at your merry will. Ok, enough with the Christmas-based puns, I promise. RiE

British Troops DLC released & Official 1.01 Update

It should be roughly 1/10, or one per squad; that's the ratio which was agreed upon - if it's consistently significantly more, perhaps it could be looked into. :) In regard to BAF in particular, given the fact that - at this point - we don't model the Gurkhas, for example, I don't think it's a bad ratio... Infact, I'd go as far as to say that PMC has allowed us to add a very long over-due identity to the Armaverse. RiE

    DLC- What do YOU want?

Just as a small thread-hijack, on the topic of environments, a new interview was released with the lead artist behind Proving Grounds' development. He offers some insights into what goes into making an official map. There is also a new which demonstrates some of the different moods possible with the new terrain. You're either trying to make a point badly or you haven't played on Shapur. ;) Best, RiE

ARMA 2 (OA) : DLC discussion thread

I know you haven't played PMC's campaign yet, so perhaps I should clarify a couple of points. Cut-scenes were separated from playable content (campaign missions) wherever possible, trying to ensure that each mission was atomic as possible, while retaining a sense of consistency in the narrative. What does this mean? Well, it's designed so that the missions are re-playable. They are, in essence, scenarios; they are all designed for 2-player co-op. 'Elimination' and 'Confirmation' are perfect example of this design philosophy. Why have we done this? Well, players loved BAF, but often were left wanting more from the campaign. PMC is fundamentally designed to provide some sense of balance between atomic, distinct, re-playable, missions and a developed narrative experience. Best, RiE

    Campain quality in ARMA

You should remember, of course, that CWC was created over years of development time, with a much larger scope than, for example, PMC. We always push our resources as far as they'll stretch (and sometimes too far!) on every project we develop. What you've mentioned above was the design brief for this content - linked missions (narrative), simple objectives, characterisation, cutscenes, etc - so I'm really glad that you've liked and enjoyed it (I will not 'talk about the realism here' either :p). Of course, perhaps you are yet to play through the multiple endings... ;) RiE

We have known issues caused by mods; more analysis is in progress by 'top men'. At this stage, I'd suggest vanilla arma is your best bet, until we have more information about (the unsurprisingly large) number of potential conflicts. RiE

    Campain quality in ARMA

EDIT: @kamikaziii, I quite agree. It would be surely infantile to respond ;) This campaign was not to your taste, to your style of gameplay. I can accept that; however, many have enjoyed what has been offered, and understood the different type of core gameplay experience available. Our design brief was not to rehash CWC, it was to work within the parameters of the PMC context, extend the story created so far by Operation Arrowhead and BAF, and offer a return to individuals in combat, as opposed to large-scale factional warfare. I think Wolfrug has made a number of perfectly valid points, and offers a fair analysis, balancing his subjectivity with objective reason. I fear that other replies have not afforded such rationality, and I sincerely pity that fact. Regards, RiE

ARMA 2: Private Military Company 1.00 released

While I'm not going to discount your opinions - they're certainly yours to express - I think you cannot come to a considered judgement until after you play the campaign - the central plank of this DLC. This is, of course, notwithstanding the 'new dubbing' (scottish, american and australian protocol), vehicles, weapons, environment, and, ofcourse, the lite version. It offers the the same number of missions as the totality of BAF playable content. Its also much more challenging to make a thought-through campaign, with real improvements to character-depth, voice-acting, and story at the heart of our content. Furthermore, it has been designed in such a way that makes each mission as atomic as possible, offering replay-value to players without the heavier-weight narrative exposition (moved to the skipable cut-scenes whereever possible). I hope you continue to explore what is on offer, and keep an open mind in terms of the content on offer. ;) I completely understand your concern; indeed, we did not design the campaign to be played without videos. We're sorry that you are experiencing playback issues - it appears to be dependent upon a number of factors at the user end, with different users encountering vastly different quality of experiences. This is not acceptable as far as I'm concerned, but, you've got to love the PC. ;) I know you'er an experienced user, so forgive me if I sound patronising by suggesting that the best advice at the moment is to de-fragment your HDD, to ensure data access is as efficient as possible for the playback. It's likely that dumping a DLC on top of Arma 2 can really push HDD I/O operations. It's possible that the videos themselves (which are .OGV format) can be played back in a standalone media player. We will certainly be looking further at why some of our users are flagging up this problem. Best, RiE

ARMA 2: Private Military Company 1.00 released

@Richey, thanks for the considered post. Fair criticisms and complements, in my judgement, though, perhaps, I would disagree with some points. Why did I use so many spoilers? Well - its official December, so after I watch Jingle All the Way, it will officially be the Christmas season a.k.a. present-exchanging window. I hope you play the campaign again - it really can offer replay value (also why we separated much of the cutscenes), and, particularly get a change to play it in 2-player coop. Not to mention the multiple endings possible within 'Deception' alone. Top Tip - Player two actually gets to play our for himself in 2-player co-op! Choose wisely ;)RiE
  22. It's true, there is a substantial amount of data association with our campaign's use of the new video functionality. I've banged on enough about our campaign, but, I'd say, fairly objectively, the new map is of really great quality - sure people will complain of it's size, but the team in Brno did a cracking job given the assets available. I've enjoyed working with it and reckon that it will offer some interesting new options for mod makers. But, I suppose only time and forums posts will tell for the community. RiE
