ArmA2 / OA (low) performance issues

Hi I have a quick question. I bought this game 2 years back and spent countless hours trying to get the performance to an acceptable level but ultimately failed. I gave up on it hoping a patch would come around to fix the issues. (My hardware was and still is medium to high end) So the question is, has there been some incredible patch that fixed the low framerate issue so that I should try install again? -

spent man days 6 months back trying to get a reasonable framerate on this game. (won't go into details but many OS reloads were done etc.) Eventually I gave up cos it was making me too grumpy. I wandered in here the other day to see there is a new patch 1.07 which apparently helps performance. Installed it and performance is still terrible. At start of Harvest Red - Harvest Red I get between 15-25FPS. This just seems so wrong when I have other games with much higher texture detail getting 60+. Back in the cupboard it goes. My rig: amd phenom II x4 955, 3.2ghz 4GB ram ati 5850 -

This might sound crazy, but when I first tried the game on XP I was using SP2 and I'm sure performance was pretty decent. I'm now using XP SP3 and performance seems as bad as windows 7. Am I imagining things or do you think I should try one last time by installing SP2? ---------- Post added at 05:09 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:59 PM ---------- Oh and thanks Lupo and Bulldog for the suggestions, I will give those a try -

I posted earlier in this thread saying I was gonna switch to xp because performance was better. I guess I was looking at a scene where fps is runs better cos now that I'm playing in a built up area I'm averaging 25fps which just feels crap. I have spent too many hours reloading the OS's and this game and I am now sick of it. It's going back in the cupboard where it can't annoy me anymore. -

Just thought I'd add that Crysis is also running a zillion times better on XP than Win 7 -

That would be a very good bet :D In all seriousness, this is a very big find and perhaps a sticky thread should be made to warn other windows 7 users who are not looking indepth in this thread? -

in disk management in Windows 7 you can shrink the partition and create a new partition with the unused space. I installed XP on the new partition. I haven't got round to seeing how I get back into Windows 7 but it should be simple enough by editing the boot.ini file in the root of the drive -

well this is absolutely AMAZING!!! I've finished installing XP and Arma 2 is now a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GAME! I am now getting average of 60 fps (I think it maxes there) and the lowest it's dropped thus far is around 45. It's like going from a slideshow on windows 7 to a movie on XP. Colt, thanks a million for your help, I would have given up on the game if it weren't for you. The only downside is that I've wasted $130 on a useless operating system and will probably have to buy a new copy of XP. While I'm very stoked with this find, I'm also really disgusted that microsoft has released yet anoher poorly performing product. -

thank you, thank you, thank you! Reason I was doing this is I had to do it with my old sata desktop. I tried just running setup and lo and behold it worked! You just saved me hours of my life! Will report results as soon as installed. Only thing I'm worried about is will I take a big performance hit installing 32 bit XP on my 64bit PC? I'll have to try get hold of 64bit XP if this is the case. -

I tried changing the page file and setting video memory to very high with no difference at all. At present I'm having an absolute blast trying to figure out how to install XP on a sata hard drive with no floppy drive to install the drivers. fuuuuuuuuuuuun! -

alright I'm very confused now. I installed Crysis which ran very nicely (low settings) on my old laptop with hd3650. On my new desktop I am having similar issues as arma 2, on max detail the fps is similar to lowest detail no AA - avg 30 down to 10-15. Could this be due to me running Win 7? I'm thinking of partitioning the hard drive and installing xp to see if there's an improvement. This kind of performance is NOT why I shelled out for a very expensive games machine. :( -

ok I installed and ran gamebooster and ingame made it as ugly as possible. 800x600 res, no AA, no AF and all detail set to lowest possible. The FPS is almost exactly the same as when I have all detail on Very High, it averages around 30 and then in some places slows to an unplayable 10-15. When I run call of duty 5 I have all settings maxed at max resolution and I am getting 90fps+ I also tried changing video memory ingame with no effect. -

amd phenom 3.2ghz quad core ati 5850 4GB RAM Win 7 Game fps drops to 15 quite often no matter what detail setting I use and is unplayable in my view. I am horrified they can release a game that is unplayable on the latest hardware and am very upset I paid good money for it. Until they patch it I give up for now.
