    The next generation dynamic persistent mission addon for ArmA3

    I didn't like how intel was a bit rubbish and it was hard to figure out what the virtual AI was actually doing behind the scenes.  So I wrote a spec for a more realistic intel overlay and Spyderblack coded it.  Once enabled in the C2ISTAR module, Virtual AI units will report the location, activity and type of enemy units they detect on the map.  Friendly commanders will indicate their current objectives and units that KIA will be marked to indicate where active combat is taking place.  This should provide a much better idea of what is going on and help players determine where to get involved in the action.  Players with the Command Tablet can still see the detailed Operational Overlay for AI Commanders.

     

    Release Highlights

    • New Feature: Military Map Intel - displays friendly and hostile activity on the map.

    SOG Prairie Fire cDLC Iterative Update

    Various fixes, enhancements and tweaks to maps, modules and missions to support the latest release of the SOG Prairie Fire cDLC, with many fringe benefits to regular ALiVE scenarios.  In particular, caves should be populate properly now for all your tunnel rat shenanigans.

     

    What We're Working On

    Whilst ALiVE was originally conceived as a mission making tool, there are a couple of things we'd like to enhance to make ALiVE missions more intuitive to players, in particular exposing some of the background activity so its easier to figure out what to do in an open ended scenario.  We'll release these when they're ready™.

    • Full Player Tasks integration with Mil Logistics, ATO and AI Commanders.
    • Rework of the C2ISTAR Intelligence framework
    • Enhancements to Combat Support (Marcel promised)

    Release 1.14
     

    SOG Prairie Fire cDLC Update

    To coincide with release of the exciting new Creator DLC: SOG Prairie Fire, this update provides full compatibility for the new Vietnam map, factions and units.  We've also included 4 new scenarios, which will be available to play on the SOG Prairie Fire ALiVE public server and also our own official ALiVE public server hosted by Kelly's Heroes.  In the meantime we have also made over 300 bug fixes, feature enhancements and refinements.  Some of these changes could impact existing missions so as always we strongly recommend deleting and replacing ALiVE modules if you experience odd behaviour.

     

    In addition, we have provided a selection of Vietnam-era compositions to complement the new ALiVE missions.  ALiVE SOG Prairie Fire Compositions is available as a separate download on the Steam Workshop.  The compositions will automatically be used by ALiVE placement modules but can also be used standalone and placed manually in the editor.  Single player, local hosts and dedicated servers need to run the mod to use the compositions with ALiVE.  Note that clients joining dedicated servers do not need to subscribe (though they do need the cDLC obviously!)

    • MACC Player Tasks: Military Air Commander can now delegate SEAD and CSAR tasks to Players via the Strategic Player Tasks system (if enabled in C2ISTAR module)
    • C2ISTAR: Option added to disable Image Intelligence
    • Military Logistics: major overhaul to improve heli insertions in high density terrain such as jungle
    • Virtual AI System: Fixed profile speed limiter (slow is now properly slow); added option to disable Zeus spawning virtual groups
    • CQB: Support added for caves and tunnels
    • Player Combat Support: Improved artillery ordnance detection; added Attack Ground feature for untargetted air attack runs (such as napalm drops)
    • Civ Pop: Added support for SOG Prairie Fire including ambient sounds and VN_Rations for Humanitarian Aid in COIN scenarios (OPCOM Asymmetric)

    Devastating Elite Army of Destruction

    It's been a while.  In this year's release Tup has a meltdown, Spyderblack invents something awesome but entirely unrelated to ALiVE, Tupw goes all humanitarian and Highhead crashes his spaceship into the sun.  There are also some bug fixes, a couple of actual updates and a whole lot of map indexing, which is probably long overdue.

     

    Release Highlights

    • New or Updated Maps: Chernarus 2020 2.0; pja305; Wferlingen Winter; Chongo; Ruha; Summa Winter; Isla Abramia; Mull of Kintyre; Rosche; VT7; Lingor3; Livonia (finally!) and some others.
    • Add option in Player Menu to restore markers after JIP
    • Fixed armoured units refusing to play ball after spawning
    • Improved vehicle damage persistence
    • Improved persistence support for ACRE radios
    • Added Humanitarian Aid for CivPop, which can improve relations in COIN scenarios (optional ACE support)

    Release 1.12.1
     

    Civilian Interaction
    Since we added the civilian population enhancements, there has been a great demand to integrated Spyderblack's Civ Interaction mod into ALiVE.  This enables players to stop, search, detain and question civilians about the local situation, with a chance that they will give hints into enemy forces or insurgent activity in the area.  Asymmetric operations are now more immersive than ever, with civilians playing a key role.  We've also added several quality of life improvements based on player feedback, a long list of newly indexed maps and some underlying performance improvements, in particular CQB which is one of the oldest modules in the mod.

     

    Note that unfortunately we cannot index Livonia DLC map until BIS releases it as a pbo

     

    Release Highlights

    • Ambient Civ Pop: integrated advanced civilian interaction by Spyderblack
    • Combat Support & C2ISTAR: added partial-matching support for required items
    • Mil CQB: added a new field to allow custom static weapon classnames
    • Virtual AI Module: added a separate spawn range option for UAVs and allow for spawn ranges to change after mission start
    • Lots of new maps indexed - big shout out to @Diveyez and @bradon
    • Several performance improvements and "feature refinements" (bug fixes), including CQB module and ORBAT Creator.

    • Is there an up to date list of factions that work out of box with ALiVE ?

    I'm looking to create a version of the insurgency template mission in Chernarus or some of Temppa's maps like Ruha. I would really want to use eastern european civilians, but none of the suitable civilian faction from the Wiki list seem to work. Either the civilians just don't appear, or then they appear in the standard Altis-style clothing. I tried with the CUP_C_CHERNARUS and couple different variations of faction names as I saw them spelled in the editor.

     

    Orbatron faction will be the last chance, I guess. But that will require me to add one more 'mod' to the already lengthy list on the dedi.

    Factions names are all case sensitive, so check that first.

     

    You can load a faction into the Orbatron to check that it has groups defined properly to work with ALiVE (it's what Orbatron was originally invented for!)

    Pathfinding
    Spyderblack has taught ALiVE Virtual AI how to navigate, which is a feature that's been on our backlog since forever.  This means virtual land forces should stick to the land and move around impassable terrain such as lakes and mountains, providing a more realistic interpretation of the battlefield.  Vehicles should avoid very steep terrain, wheeled vehicles prefer roads and aircraft can go anywhere (when they're airborne anyway).  Ai path finding may occasionally have issues on maps with lots of small islands, so there is an option to turn it off in the Virtual AI module if you wish.

ALIVE 1.9 Pre-Release is now available on Github.  This introduces experimental pathfinding for ALiVE Virtual AI, which means virtual land forces should stick to the land and move around impassable terrain such as lakes.  Vehicles should avoid mountainous terrain, wheeled vehicles prefer roads, and planes can go anywhere (when they're airborne anyway).  It took Spyderblack just under a week to put this together and it seems to work without any issues, which is...suspicious.  It'd be great if some people could try this out and let us know what you think.

    Spyder's ego is writing checks that his body can't cash.  It's not his coding, it's his attitude. Code is dangerous, but right now he's worse. Dangerous and foolish. He may not like who's coding with him, but whose side is he on?  That is right, but I held something back. I see some real genius in his coding, but I can't say that in here. I'm afraid that everyone in the tax trailer would see right through me, and I just don't want anyone to know that I've fallen for him.

     

    Release Highlights

    Combat Support - bunch of fixes and enhancements and you can now talk to a pilot from outside the chopper for quick RTB commands when dropping off in a hot LZ / HLS

    MACC - Planes should avoid immediate terminal lithobraking after spawning in flight (I've been playing too much KSP)

    C2ISTAR - Added a setting to exclude custom objectives from player tasking

    Map Index - I44 Merderet v3; Alaska 2035; Ruha (thanks to all those who contributed)

    Hotfix
    Due to accidental redundancies in our QA department following explosive decompression of the charity coffee machine, management has concluded that QA should henceforth be outsourced, off shored, crowd funded and delegated to public committee.  There is nothing to see here, please move along. :sulkoff:

     

    There were a number couple regression bugs in the 1.7 release that for some unfathomable reason didn't manifest in testing.  The performance improvements on Virtual profiles somehow impacted logistics requests for groups of AI.  There was also a bug with static data (such as map indexes) not loading properly and causing the infamous infinite loading screen, which has apparently been there for more than 3 years but only just decided to become a problem now.  #justArmAthings

    Another reminder that ALiVE War Room no longer has sufficient funds from donations to cover server costs and will close down  at the end of this week (11 Feb).  Please ensure you have switched your persistent ALiVE missions to use Local in the Data Module as Cloud will no longer work.

    The next generation dynamic persistent mission addon for ArmA3

    Release 1.5.1

    Hackathon 2017
    Last month the dev team got together for our annual 24 hour hackathon where we focus our efforts to smash some knotty bugs and finish off as many WIP features as we can.  We also eat a lot of pizza and play test ALiVE to death (usually ours).  We have added a simple respawn for destroyed MACC aircraft although they will not yet retain custom pylon loadouts for manually placed aircraft.  That will come when we add full integration with the Military Logistics framework.  However, we have added this feature to Player Combat Support aircraft.

     

    C2ISTAR tasks have had an overhaul and should now be more robust.  Tasks are a popular feature of ALiVE but the existing randomly generated tactical tasks are only a placeholder.  Our vision is to have autogenerated missions fully integrated with the AI Ground, Air and Logistics Command so that players are directed to support the AI Commander's current objectives.  We have built the framework for the Strategic Tasks system and integrated some Air Tasking Orders, which will be assigned to players and AI flying combat aircraft.  We've added some initial and very basic Strategic Ground tasks and will expand on these in due course.  Select "Strategic" in the tasks module if you want to try out this new system.

     

    The ALiVE Quickstart mission has been updated so should work properly now.  We've also added a simple multiplayer scenario on Malden, mostly aimed at demonstrating how to set up a basic ALiVE mission in Eden - feel free to pull it apart and have a look.

     

    ALiVE War Room Closure Notice
    ALiVE War Room has always been free at the point of use and has relied on the generosity of the community to cover server costs.  Unfortunately after 5 years of continuous service there are no longer sufficient funds to support maintenance costs.  We are exploring alternative funding options but in the event that we have to close down the War Room, you will obviously lose access to the ALiVE cloud services.  You can still use the local persistence option in the ALiVE Data module for mission and player persistence (this is the preferred approach anyway).  For clarity, the following cloud services are provided by ALiVE War Room and will no longer be available when the server is shut down:

     

    • Remote storage of persistent mission states
    • Operations, player and clan statistics
    • Mission recording and After Action Review
    • Server performance monitoring
    • Clan management tools
    • ALiVE forum signature blocks

    ALiVE is fully supported on a Linux Dedicated Server (as well as Windows). In fact the ALiVE Official Server for testing is running Ubuntu. It's been simplified an awful lot now so you don't need a dedi server or any database setup.  Simply place the ALiVE (Data) module and set Database Source to Local.  Then turn on Persistence on any modules you want to persist - AI Commander, Virtual AI System, CQB, Player Options (be sure to select "Save to Database").

     

    Respawn works exactly the same as any normal mission - place a respawn marker (e.g. respawn_west) and include respawn=3 in your desription.ext as you would with any mission.  BI Community wiki has a useful page that explains more.  The ALiVE Multispawn sit on top of this and just adds some more immersive ways of respawning.

  16. Bear in mind also that you don't need to set up War if you use local persistence, which is the preferred option.  You will only need War Room to benefit from Mission Stats and After Action Reviews.

     

    @tobur If you have it running your new faction in the mod line, when you load the Orbat Creator it will show up in the faction list.  Import and edit it like you would any other faction.

    A Rare Hotfix

    Due to an abject failure in our QA department a couple of niggly bugs made it through to release.  The minions have been duly whipped and sent to join Boba Fett.  The manglement would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.  No animals were harmed in the making of this mod.

    Air Tasking Orders
    The second iteration of the Military Air Component Commander (MACC) includes a full suite of Air Tasking Orders (ATO).  As well as setting Combat Air Patrols (CAP), Air Command can now scramble Defensive Counter Air (DCA) against incoming enemy strike aircraft, order Offensive Counter Air (OCA) against enemy airfields and Suppression of Enemy Air Defences (SEAD) against detected Ground Based Air Defences (GBAD).  MACC has been integrated into the ground forces chain of command, so the Military AI Commander can request Close Air Support (CAS) for troops in contact or Recce and Strike missions on enemy held objectives.  The AI Commander's decision-action cycle has been adjusted to accomodate the new capabilities.  OPCOM requests aerial recce on large objective (>150) in hostile areas then calls OCA if air assets are detected or CAS if armoured units are spotted.

     

    Air Tasking Orders have been integrated with the C2ISTAR module's autogenerated player tasks.  If no AI aircraft are available, MACC will offer the ATO to players.  The Combat Search and Rescue autogen task has been updated to direct players to recover downed pilots from actual aircraft crash sites.  We're planning to add more integrated C2ISTAR tasks in future so that players can contribute directly to the AI generated ground war.

    In other news, thanks to feedback from Vegas and others, we have reviewed the way CQB persistence works.  Previously you had to clear an entire sector completely for it to persist as cleared, which could be frustrating if you missed a building in a thousand metre square city.  The size of area that you must clear has been reduced tenfold and once all known sub sectors are clear, the entire CQB sector is considered clear for the purposes of persistence.

     

    Note for Server Admins & Mission Editors

    Finally, a couple of important house keeping notes for mission editors and server admins
    1. Since APEX assets are now available to all, the APEX compositions have been merged into the main branch and are no longer in optional folder
    2. We have started updating our modules to support the 3DEN configuration (Player Options, ALiVE Required, C2ISTAR).  In case of issues, simply delete and replace the modules and check the modules settings.
    3. Logistics replacements for destroyed aircraft is coming in the next release.  For now, when all aircraft are lost or destroyed MACC will exit.

     

    ALiVE War Room
    The ALiVE War Room is seeing more activity than ever and the introduction of the new AAR tool provided by Titan has seen a big increase in the amount of data we handle each week.  The War Room service is completely free to end users and the server costs are paid for out of donations.  If you enjoy using the War Room, please consider supporting our server costs with a small donation to keep it ALiVE!
