ArmA2 / OA (low) performance issues
Herbal Influence replied to R3fl3x's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Oh, yes, I am a huge fanboy. :bounce3: But consider this: My cpu - cores get used close to the max when doing Arma2. And: I am happy with the results. But since you are fans of Arma2 also: Let's try to break it further down. I have a thesis: It's something with Intels-Cpu. They are probably not optimized to do Arma2. And indeed I don't know about "channels" used - I would be lucky to learn also about that. Perhaps because Intel had to spare the money for they since long knew they would have to give a 1 Billion Euros to the EU for consumer-misleading-distribution practises ... ;-) EDIT: In terms of fraps: If I place myself on top of airport tower of Utes as CIVI and insert three troups (BLUFOR, OPFOR, RES) I get 34 - 59 fraps with mostly highest settings (just my individual taste). Just to give an example. -
This is not for posting about Dragon Rising. For opinions about Codemasters Dragon Rising pls go here: http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=87936

No. This is not about Codemasters Dragon Rising.

ArmA2 / OA (low) performance issues
Herbal Influence replied to R3fl3x's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Sorry. But you are mismatching things. I argued about why ArmA2 is even more cpu intensive than other graphically "high end games". And I can tell you that my cpu is quite intensly working while playing it. There will be a kind of bottleneck in your system - we can surely consent on that. -
Would this be possible in Arma 2?
Herbal Influence replied to Drew's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Can't you use something like the picture of the review mirrors of vehicles? As far as I can remember - they work! Wasn't I sitting in an MI-8 lately ... watching the scenery with the review mirrors ... ? Thats a picture in the picture ... -
Mmm .... did you read the posts before? Or is it your signature text to explain this? ;-)

ArmA2 / OA (low) performance issues
Herbal Influence replied to R3fl3x's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Again you compare "high end games" with Arma2. It's not your fault. But after some weeks with Arma2 you will know better. Arma2 is demanding everything (and more) your "high end games" demand plus an even better performance of the cpu. I know that many people on this forum blame BI for "poor optimization". But it's like saying: The Mercedes AMG with 12 Cylinders I bought consumes much too much compared to my VW Polo. But because of the vast openess of BI games it's indeed not easy to explain why Arma 2 consumes so much. But that difficulty again lies in the nature of this. And it's quite difficult to grasp and to explain in words - again ... for the nature of it. I can only give you a hint: Each and every object (AIs, vehicles etc.) in Arma2 constantly inform themselves continously about their environment and relate to it. This contains at last: watching - alone a complex thing to simulate, hearing (distance, direction ... ) That's a vast data stream. plus AIs (and vehicles in a way) act also autonomously and thereby again inform themselves continously about position and status datas from anything (buildings, underground, other AIs, vehicles - movement of such things) else. That's another vast data stream. plus All objects do behave as if they were in real world with it's certain laws of physics. All things happening are simulated as being indeed happening in that very special concrete situation (with that special underground, with that special own weight, with that special own speed, with that special and maybe differing speed of the others, with that elasticity ... etc. etc.). plus accepting and acting after commands given in the meantime etc etc. Sure I forgot a lot. Lez say: That certain branch of that certain tree to the right ... did you expect it affects continiously the data stream for just watching? You only realize this when the tree has been cut down by a truck the AI didn't hear because of a nearby tank ... It's an overwhelming "sandbox": Just put two groups of enemy solders around the airport tower of Utes, set yourself as Civi on top of the tower and watch whats going on ... Hope you goin to appreciate ... :bounce3: -

ArmA2 / OA (low) performance issues
Herbal Influence replied to R3fl3x's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
It's not. You comparing apples with eggs. Arma2 is really cpu demanding and this not for no reason. It's not just a graphical entertainer. It's about physics and intelligent behaviour realized in a way you find nowhere else. -
Another example: What do you see on the first page here? AMD or Intel? http://www.alternate.de/html/index.html On the first page of this distributor you find: "Intel - genial schnell!" (english: "Intel - geniously fast")
-
When did you last see "Intel inside!" ? It's all over Dells pages, german advertising prospects of the biggest PC sellers ... And WHY do they post it so much - the hardware sellers? For free? For sympathy? I cannot even remember having seen something of that from AMD. Seriously. ---------- Post added at 09:21 ---------- Previous post was at 09:12 ---------- And ... click here: http://www1.euro.dell.com/de/de/unternehmen/Desktops/ct.aspx?refid=desktops&s=bsd&cs=debsdt1 You see: They show first of all: INTEL ... If you click there your page is plastered all over with Intel logos. And this under the nice words to compare cpus. Sorry - at last this example shows ... how well balanced Dell treats AMDs.

A few problems from a new player
Herbal Influence replied to Cool Hand's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Problems reported are due to cpu-performance and connection lag. I do only meet them one time in two hours multiplayer gameplay. If it slows down after some time - that's normally the mission itself, allowing too many units for all. I once tried to use skype during gameplay - for it needs a lot bandwith game showed that lag you report. cpu: Arma 2 is very cpu demanding - this for good reason and not because of a non-optimized engine. But it's really strange that Intel cpu have so much problems as you can read in this forum. Sorry to have to say so. For I don't wanna waste your thread with a cpu-war, all that are interested click instead here. graphics: Your card is much better than mine - I have no issues I would ever mention. So this will not be the bottleneck. Sure you should install the newest driver .... from just a week ago. It is said he increases performance nevertheless and sure erases some bugs. -> nvidia.com -
Thanx for your posts. I think Intel - cpus are simply overrated in commercial public media and I think that BI did and do use AMD and wasn't - like close to everyone - aware about this "Intel" - performance hype. I think it is most recommandable to be nervous about any cpu-performance-test that could be influenced in any thinkable way by Intel - e.g. are there/have there been advertisements in the same media? etc. etc.). The most serious german print journal on politics (spiegel.de) reported lately that Intel uses a misleading "test" to measure the power consumtion of laptop computers too. Big companies pay people to max out anything. They pay psychologists to max out the possibility to influence consumers decision. They pay payed students to "edit" wikipedia - so I think it is our task to be very nervous. Why would they NOT pay some specialists to troll in forums and blogs? Why would they NOT pay people to open "hardware test" internet sites or even print media? Will a media online or print ever get an advertisement when delivering a test that shows "bad results"? I think it's like the marketing hype on Codemasters Dragon Rising ... sure not only, but hot air to the max. The outcome is the same: frustrated users. Newest trick: Create a slogan to make people believe in that you are "good", like "Do no evil!" And collect data about persons like the world has never seen it before. Hey, I like a free econonmy - but citizens are treated in EVERY thinkable and many "special" ways only to get them only to buy something. Intel saw the punishment of 1 Billion Euros coming - since years. That is well documented. They also knew that even if they pay it they are the winners - in financial terms. And they are. To them this seemingly enormous amount is something to be payed out of the pocket, i.e. peanuts. I believe US tax systems even allows them to deduct it from their tax obligation though it is payed by the EU company sites of Intel - but I am not sure about that. And I don't think AMD has better ethics or better products but they've been lame i.e. couldn't simply compete in marketing strategies since 2004. And I think the effect is: Intels are overrated, AMDs tend to be underrated. Just that. Just my overall impression when I see so many Intel users complaining about performance issues. (This is OT here and there are lots of other threads, so don't let us discuss this here: Arma 2 is very cpu demanding - this for good reason and not because of a non-optimized engine. People shouldn't compare Crysis, Codemaster Dragon Rising or whatever with Arma 2. They are simply different genres. Crysis etc. don't need so much CPU. They are simpler games for a cpu.)

LOL

Wow - thanx for your openess. Hope you won't regret it for there may be many who have been mislead by it - which is not your fault, as it seems.

Selling Mods and Scripts for Profit
Herbal Influence replied to Preacher1974's topic in BOHEMIA INTERACTIVE - GENERAL
Wow --- that's been harsh, sparks50. :( It's quite impossible for me to imagine that you are that badly bashing BI for just this small piece of additional software which hardly an average gamer of AA2 touches at all and a piece of software that is nothing more than something like a present to the community. May it be bugged or not. You didn't pay for it. I read all the thread and I sympathize very much with the thought of leaving it all free. And - don't get me wrong - because (!) I like it to stay so, I think it's good that this topic has been raised. For capitalism always finds its way. It's something that's creeping. And BI did good to not allow to develop things with their software and then sell it. But is this a reliable system to hinder commercialization in future? As of today we think: AA2 has always been a niche game, if there is a danger, it's small and far, far away. But as DR sucks as it seems and more and more people get aware of the genious of BI games ... (I happen to meet more and more absolutely fascinated newcomers online) things can change. So I would like to arise the question whether it is possible not-to-use the BI development kit and this way be able to commercialize big parts of AA2. The way the commercialization could then work I can imagine this way: Clan A gets famous for it's nice weapons, landscapes and vehicles, special addons that increase resolution and at the same time increasing fraps by 50 %. They managed this all without using the BI development kit. And clan members invested a lot of work in it. So, one day, the clan decides - like a golf club - only to let members sign when they are ready to pay an additional fee for playing with that "special developments". And they go and "license" other clans ... and one day you feel quite naked and alone in the multiplayerarea for it's all red-crossed: "Only Members!" Can't this be the future, we could indeed be frightened off - ? If this is rubbish - all the better ! ;) -
This game has got it's hooks in me.....
Herbal Influence replied to Force10's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
1. You can ask the designer to attach it to an email. 2. For the more well know missions: Search with <name of mission> for link here on the forum or scroogle(.com) it. Often missionmakers add links in their personal profile: just click on their names .... 3. Or ask while doing it on multiplayer. 4. When you joind a mulitplayer game, you have a copy of that mission in your personal AA2-folder on your PC. You can copy it into AA2/mpmissions folder and open it with LAN-Game in AA2 to play the whole mission offline. This is good for training. 5. Or check in to the websites of the big clans. They offer a broad variety of addons, mods and missions. Scroogle: <Armed Assualt 2><Clan> -
At last in Germany legal problems might arise from "skulls popping open". Politicians discussing to forbid First Person shooters seriously after each school massacre taking place and lately they were short before acting legally. I personally like to play tactically, technically ... and don't want to have BI games in danger of being forbidden one day because of this. So I don't like that "feature" of DR at all. Also I do have relatives who actually saw skulls popping in war all over the place. They would question my mental health doing/watching that for fun - whether that is right or wrong - I respect them and don't want to alienate them.

LOL - there will be hundreds or thousands or .... people like you thats getting "healed" in that two ways 1. Realizing what BI games are about (openess) 2. Realizing that other games might have a vast marketing machine running, but no genius at all. .... , so don't worry, you r forgiven ... ;) -
So how far is this game now since release?
Herbal Influence replied to ^Th0mas^'s topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
To me it was a pleasure from the first moment (2 days after release) on. And I did OFP since 2001 and AA1 from 2004 on. The pathfinding problem: I even can sit in the back of a full truck (all my AIs) with one of my AIs driving us neatly to the spot, through towns, woods and sharp corners. Without any problem. I remembered OFPs pathfinding problems and ... in AA2 he drove absolutely well! So from my point of view: Bad pathfinding might have something to do with the servers performance. Or with the performance of that special driving AI, which is adjustable through a slider in the editor and sure will be randomely adjusted if you playing missions done by BI or cogamers. -
After you did any kind of mpmission on a dedicated server you you may copy the mission file from your personal AA2 file ("personal data") into the mpmissions files. After this you can launch the game "offline".

Thanx for your post. So it's a common problem that Crcti warfare slows down after a while. I like it nevertheless for it has that unitcam - just shift-click on any AI on the map and you see from his perspective. May work perhaps only if you are commander. I like to command and unitcam makes it even more fun.
