Operation Flashpoint 2 officially announced
SaBrE_UK replied to imported_bör's topic in OFFTOPIC - Games & Gaming
Technically FPS can mean from the first-person view, so not limit the game's realism at all. I do think that anything with the traditional "floating camera" FPS viewpoint (e.g. HL2, Crysis, BF2 etc.) has limitations when it comes to realism, at least the way they are now. In ArmA, where you see your rifle is where your enemy sees your rifle; where your feet are to you is where they are to your enemy. I also suspect that is old information, since it's the EGO engine that will be used, and the Neon is a previous iteration of it. But honestly- watch this: http://www.gamershell.com/download_23761.shtml ...Really impressive gameplay video of GRID, which uses the same engine as OFP2. If it looks anything like that I'll be very pleased. -

Dynamic destruction, who needs it anyway?
SaBrE_UK replied to funnyguy1's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
I totally agree things should be improved, don't get me wrong, but to just say it is possible and should be done (not that you said that) is misguided in my opinion. I do believe that anything's possible given the time, though. Huge amount of LODs and optimisation would make anything possible, I think. Whether it's viable or achievable in a certain time frame is a different question, however... -

Typical hardware setup in 2001 was: Processor 1Ghz Memory: 256 MB Gfx card: 64 MB I guess the change in hardware commonly used should be obvious. I think you misunderstand the meaning of my post. But the massive limitations that Red Faction had in its destruction have gone unsaid here, so far. Some include: Massive problems with lag after many things were destroyed, the lack of being able to truly destroy a whole wall, making a hole right next to another one was erratic, the lack of physics so that lack of support would mean collapsing, holes disappearing after a bit when others are made, holes not quite appearing in the right place, z-fighting, tunnels going the way they wanted, VERY low res textures and general quality, unnoticeable on an average TV screen... I'm sure there are more. -

Maybe, but at regular intervals since the 1950s they said we'd have personal jetpacks very soon. Technology has come so far since then, so we should all have them, right? -
Also having deciduous woodland would mean leafless trees in a cold winter, meaning new models needed and various effects. For ArmA 2, and given its setting, Autumn is fine. If people can release mods for Winter islands with perhaps new models and textures, then great Still, imagine in the future a fully realised world with seasons, plants dying and growing dynamically and different grasses, fully implemented weather... We can but dream for now.

Extended Voice Addon. v0.9.1 WIP

Sounds excellent. Could someone create a YouTube video showing this off? -
If people would just read the posts. I despair sometimes.

Thanks for the effort, but they're definitely not new :/ -
I'm sure I saw something about multiple light sources and shadows from them. Could be wrong, though.

Aww such a tease. Glad the bayonet will be included

What I have in mind is the inevitably small towns in ArmA2. I often, when surprised by the enemy in ArmA, run out of ammo on my current magazine with an enemy within 10 feet and wish I could run up to him and perhaps tackle him instead of being helpless. It's a real immersion killer. In ArmA, in towns the combat is often within a hundred metres, and since the buildings are largely unenterable unarmed combat could happen a lot. In the end there are hundreds of different situations a soldier could be in, and tackling is hardly difficult to imagine. I've seen stories of hand-to-hand combat in Iraq and Afghanistan (less so in the latter).

Hopefully with a 3d editor, it'll mean we can download mods that give you these options
-
Obviously you're right and it's a total impossibility that hand-to-hand fighting would occur. Thank you for enlightening me.

I'm sure they'll give us all a huge update on the game some time and rouse a lot of interest that way. I agree, though it will not be out in 2008, unless the huge team they have are making the development time much shorter. Another thing: In PC Zone (UK magazine) OFP2 is mentioned in a Race Driver: Grid article. It says tanks were shown and that OFP2 will include the same damage system as Grid, complete with dynamic crumpling and destruction of vehicles (and perhaps buildings?). -
It would add to the diversity greatly Still, it could be something more simple such as model size, so one model might be 90% the size of the same tree next to it, just to add variety. If it was actually a growing system then they should/would have said about it in the article.

CSM Beta v2 quick teaser preview
SaBrE_UK replied to chammy's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Just in case- that splitting pain in your ear could likely be a tooth problem, I know it seems like a different place but it's linked to the nerve. Sorry it's off-topic. -
Then why did you accuse him publicly?. I've got to say a lot of your contradictions puzzle me. On topic: To say ragdoll is not possible is not true- there's always scaling and optimisation that can make things like it possible, even if they're not yet. Obviously a large overhaul of the engine would be needed and that may not be viable or important. Personally I don't think it's needed. A few dozen death animations (depending on direction of impact) would be easier (I should think) and perhaps to good effect. CoD4 had a good system but that would require a large modification of the engine.

Yeah, in addition if you have been surprised by a few enemies and you run out of bullets on your current magazine as an enemy walks round the corner, you're not going to run and reload, you're likely to try and floor them with a tackle in case they shoot you. Getting a knife out is absurd, really. Never say never , but yes I agree that it won't be done for a long time. For now a rifle-butt to the face would be fine as more important things can be done for the game. Still, any chance to show the brutality of warfare should be taken on in a realistic game. Just look at 'Saving Private Ryan', I know it's a film but when two opposing soldiers run out of ammo, they throw their helmets at each other then try to get out their pistols as quick as possible- desperation is what we need to see.

As I said in the RKSL thread, its good to have addon makers that have meticulous attention to detail and true effort put into the project. But you already know I'm a fan because I've been on your forums for years.
-
Something like this is a really good idea if done correctly. When fighting for your life the tussle is going to be brutal, which would add a very shocking aspect to the game. It shouldn't be like a film where both people stand facing each other- tackling with vicious tearing, biting, punching is what happens when your life is on the line.
-
Wow, thanks Flashbang. The game looks excellent, apart from the silly look of the grass growing through the tank tracks 0_o It could be fixed, though
-
Good to hear It's good to have addon makers who want to get everything just right.

If you are going for Vista, go for 32 bit; 64 bit has many problems. It's your best bet to get Vista (for the future) but have a dual install, so you have XP as well on a separate hard drive partition. My favourite computer shop: www.scan.co.uk This isn't really the correct forum, though...
