    Aliens and UFOs

Yea but maybe we haven't found the right combination of elements. Like this transparent aluminium... ;) Still, for interstellar travel we'd have to find a way to travel faster than light. Or who wants to live for generations on a ship... Also: how about a fifth option? They are as technologically advanced as we are and have already sent a response to our SETI or satellites?
  2. To be fair, there also is a Jar Hell. -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Java_Classloader#JAR_hell Maven ftw!

Imagine an alien creationist :D My guess is he'd point out that god is almighty and can have many likings. And really what is space and time to an almighty god?

    Aliens and UFOs

Being an atheist I have to point out that science and religion (or rather faith) are not mutually exclusive. Just when institutions get in the way of science because it would prove the instution wrong it becomes problematic. See Galilei. Religious people can be outstanding scientists or religion can emphasize science. What I don't understand is why exactly would the discovery of aliens render the bible obsolete?
  5. How about Jython?

Steamworks, add it in or not?

If at least you had an idea of what you're talking about. Half the forum is about user made content. Like these multiplayer missions arma downloaded for you so you can play them online... I suggest you head over to those parts of the forum and get some clues before you judge. btt: I bought some games off steam. And I've got to say it's a comfortable way of getting games. But everytime I can't play a game because steam is down, I hate myself for having games tied to steam. I'd rather buy ArmA3 off Sprocket anyhow.
  7. Well good for 5.56 that shooting game without seeing it properly is not considered responsible hunting... I agree with Beagle. 5.56 just fits most situations. It's enough to make a target combat ineffective. Granted, maybe not as quickly as 7.62 but still. It's the nuance between "kill" and "neutralise". And the latter is what you should aim for. Strategically speaking. For all other ranges up to 2000m there are other cals distributed to the troops on patrol. Plus they are constantly working on making 5.56 more effective. See the latest cartridge used by US forces. Iirc it's called M885 or something like that.
  8. If you already have the intricacies of 3 languages plus multiple frameworks to memorize, there isn't a lot of room for a function library and irritating syntaxes for control structures. Plus I can't stand languages without type safety :D At least that's what drives me away.

    Any interesting books to recommend?

That's what makes Matterhorn so awesome. It doesn't feel like fiction but rather like reading a more authentic generation kill ;)

    Any interesting books to recommend?

Karl Marlantes Matterhorn A highly authentic novel written by a vietnam war veteran. I couldn't put it down. All books by Bernard Cornwell. Especially the Sharpe series. Also Frank Herbert's Dune.
  11. Immediately recognized where it is, just couldn't remember the name of the village. :o Bushlurker, I hope you'll find a way to implement those changes. :)
  12. Good explanation NeoArmageddon. I just hope there won't be those bridges but a lot more object orientation. :P Concerning the IDE: I started off with Netbeans. It did the trick back then. UI for basic stuff like coding and debugging is very comfortable, imo better than with Eclipse. I had to switch to eclipse for work. I soon got used to it and found that it works better for integrated processes. From subversion to running apache servers for tests. I have been using Visual Studio 2010 for multiple months too and i gotta say it's a pain in the ass. Maybe it's just C# with VS 2010 though :D On another note: I've been looking into python recently and it makes a lot of stuff much easier, because it's much less rigid and redundant than java. I just miss type safety. That prevents me from using it in a bigger project. Btw: One of my favorite quotes: http://bash.org/?946461 My first thought after reading it was: "He forgot the .build() before getting the value". :crazy_o:
  13. There was a muscle memory reaction alright. It was "run like hell". Doesn't serve well when already knocked over though. I know people can take multiple rounds. That's why soldiers prefer 7,62 over 5,56 and german police started using 9mm softpoint. I just looked up "stopping power" turns out it doesn't entirely mean what I thought it means. What i meant to say is that a softpoint can knock over somebody easier than FMJ. I didn't mean to imply anything about lethality.
  14. You're still missing the point. We're not saying KE equals damage. We're saying rapid KE absorption equals stopping power.
  15. Well, they went down because of what? I can't think of anything else than kinetic energy being transferred quickly. But i agree that it doesn't mean they were fatally wounded. In fact I saw one deer getting up again after a shot to the chest with .223 Remington (5,56x45mm NATO). But you're missing my point. My point is "KE can knock down targets, if it is getting delivered quickly. ie by softpoint instead of full metal jacket rounds." Though as I said: a softpoint round with the same caliber needs more KE(either speed or mass) to go as deep as it's full metal jacket counterpart. But it would have created a bigger duct on the way.
  16. The article makes sense. Just that one point doesn't. Wounding is of course related the area hit. Tho larger rounds with great ke would help with making more "damage" ;) I saw boars and red deers go down on impact. I really don't get his point.
  17. It's a little confusing. This goes against everything I know. German police started using softpoint rounds because they have greater stopping power. I know hunters in germany use softpoint rounds because of the stopping power. Consider this: the energy of a round is 1/2*mass*speed². The important factor of stopping power is how much energy is delivered to the body in the fewest distance possible. The more friction, the more energy is delivered. But then again it depends of course on the weight of the target (inertia and such). Or maybe I don't understand what he means by "impact"...
  18. It was. But I thought: "Naaah it can't be Java, must be some scripting language related to coffee" Because come on, who would have guessed a full blown heavily enterprise application language would make it into a game :D I really can't wait tho. I like and work daily with java so it couldn't be better :D
  19. Got to second that. The woods are astonishing! Even if the size is a little off. Also I like the improvements like the fields very much. If it had been up for the competition, I wouldn't consider making a submission :D

    Military Humor

Or one could just consider it as a tribute. You know, like MBTs and APCs were named after important generals, carriers after presidents, LHDs and destroyers after great battles and finally, because I couldn't think of anything more, cruisers after known (military) persons. ;)
  21. Something I've noticed (but can't post to the issue tracker due to log on problems) is that the M197 of the AH-1 doesn't seem to have dispersion nor that camera shake effect. Not sure whether that's a leftover of the ranging tests ;) On the subject tho, I love the detail on the cobra. Especially the fully modeled cockpit makes it awesome to fly. It's a real beauty :) EDIT: Thanks to Sickboy's quick help I could post 2 tickets to the issue tracker.
  22. Doesn't battlefront provide hosting for user made content? That would explain why they restrict access to that. Servers and bandwith aren't cheap.

    AH-64 Pack

Don't worry, the suggestions, reference and overlays were exactly what I needed. I only had the few pictures I managed to gather myself and a crappy 1:72 scale plastic model because I had a hard time imagining things in 3d and simplifying them. I doubt I'll get back to the apache as your model seems to progress very well and I better pick some easier model to begin with. :D
