ricoadf replied to jgbtl292's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - SUGGESTIONS
bah, hard to explain things when this tired. I'm trying to say is that ArmA II needs to bring more features to add to the realism (such as firing out of vehicles, for example) to help open up the battlefield in a more realistic way. If I just wanted shiny I wouldn't still be playing OFP with mods  , OFP modders brought in alot of features that ArmA doesn't have, BIS should be looking into bring some into ArmA II (they did a good start by replicating CTI in ArmA with warfare). Since ArmA II is reworking the engine again then adding in new features would be possible, if BIS has the will to do so. Btw NGFT, comparing the fact that I use ArmA models is irrelevant, I'm talking about whats under the hood of the game, the models don't matter as long as the features are there -
It's possible, but dang will it be a headach for them  I say good luck to them, if they do it sweet, if not, then oh well. It would be nice if they could confirm one way or the other. Either way I plan to get OFP2 on PS3 first then either ArmA II or OFP2 on PC afterwards, it depends on what they turn out to be like as to which I go for. I can say one thing for sure, 2008 is gonna be a very long year Â

Especially when its gun is pointing at you

No, you have a person that has actually taken the time to check this out (what can I say, I'm into technology and like to know how things work )

And thats the problem with text, hard to determine the context at times lol. For one a mod and a game are 2 different things, the game developers are paid, I mod for enjoyment and if you dont like the mod then its tough coz you ain't paying for it . My point is that because the abilities have already been coded the testing would be alot less because by removing the coding they need to make sure that it hasn't caused bugs, so it actually takes more time and effort. However this is assuming that they are working off the VBS2 engine, which would make logical sence . True a skodka wont have a farrari's features, but a program that calls itself a "realistic simulator" must do the best it can to acheive those goals, I have train/ship/plane simulators and they all go as far as possible to be accurate within the cost of a normal game, now I'm not asking for that sort of extreme, but the least we can get are the features that have been around since before ArmA 1, Battlefield series has alot of features that ArmA is missing, so you can't say that I'm asking for a '$1000 feature' when it was sold for $90 AUD years ago. I just wish that the focus would stop being on 'make it pritty' and be more on 'what good features can we offer to make it feel more real', thats all I ask. Now to get back on topic: Although I would love to see smoke for tanks as a countermeasure ive been thinking that it could be hard, modders in OFP had issues getting it working (tho they did eventually) so if they can do it then the developers should be able to  -

Err mate, the $1000 cost is mostly for the USB key system (which requires it to be 'custom coded' per usb key) as well as extras that we wouldnt want, and dont forget that since its already coded in VBS and ArmA II is using VBS engine then its already in there, if they dont include it then they will have taken it out, thus we will have been ripped off. This is meant to be a simulator. As for voting with my wallet, I bought VBS1 and a few moduals, i aint buying VBS2 to get what I want in ArmA II, if ArmA II dont have it then I'll just go OFP2 because I'm sick of headbutting a wall and waiting for addon makers to do the job that the developer has been to lazy to do  On a brighter note, there is alot of time left, so BIS has a good chance to redeem themselves and keep the community with them, its a fight they can win, if they want  Remember BIS "great graphics alone do not a great game make" - quoted from a gaming mag -
Agreed, but one thing that seems universaly agreed is that ArmA II will need alot of work before it can claim to be a 'realistic' game
-
Technically the PS3 is the only 'next gen' console, but lets leave that for another convo. In another topic they confirm that the PS3 will get a release, as for mods, if they code it properly it should be like with UT3, u download the mod, transfer via usb to PS3 and put it into the right location and presto its done. Should also allow PC mods since the game would be coded the same (only graphical differences due to the OpenGL engine instead of DirectX) So theoretically yes, but weather BIS will do it, unknown atm

That is the dumbest excuse I have ever heard. They CAN do it and easily, they simply wont, and thats why I wont be getting ArmA II unless they start pulling their finger out and selling us what they claim. I'm not asking for the 'training' moduales that allow us to view players as they play or or USB key etc, just the useful features that we have modded into OFP and now ArmA. BIS either start listerning to the community or else the community will vote.... with our wallets. As for the cost, thats simply licensing and what they put on the cover. And I know they can do it because I have VBS1 (not every modual) and even that had more of the useful stuff them arma and it's using the older OFP version of the engine. Ah well, hope this rant is useful  -
Couldn't agree more, and glad that they finally fixed the dumbest thing that has gotten all of us killed more times then I can imagine

Sorry mate, but unlike the xbox the PS3 uses linux, which is a far better OS and can't catch viruses, so there is no threat of that, besides you could just reload the OS and there ya go a new fresh install :P As for ArmA II if its only on the 360 then they are simply slitting their own throught because OFP2 is on both systems, so ArmA II must follow suit to keep up. And as for the keyboard and mouse, PS3 can easily use ur generic USB keyboard and mouse on it, simply plug it in. I would recommend BIS code support for it into the PS3 version since thats the only thing that would prevent the PS3 running with keyboard and mouse on the PS3 version of arma II just my 2c's
-
Finally someone that knows what ArmA II needs, I hope BIS is listerning to your points

Some tanks cant drive in water, some can go quite deep, it depends, still agree that its silly that they explode tho

Precisley what ive been trying to say in my what arma II needs topic, things like thermal imaging and smoke countermeasures so that tanks can hide etc, this is meant to be the modern army, so modernise it! -
oh yer, and another thing that bugs me in OFP/ArmA, when u reload you cant move, in real life if your reloading a rifle/pistol you can still move, not run a marathon but get in cover.
-
Also the point is that we arn't seeing anything special in the video's, other then graphics. Show us the 'realism' that is being preached, if it cant even allow firing out of vehicles (and Battlefield as well as other programs have done it for years, including some of BIS's) then all I see is a graphical upgrade with AI that might be abit better . I want to get ArmA II, but I want to have something to be worth getting also So please BIS, bring in the features that we know you can do and you will have a winner Ah well, just my 2c
-
I was refering to new features, not AI improvements etc which is upgrading whats there, thats not to say that they arn't needed What other new features do you think it actually needs? I was using them as examples, feel free to include others you can think of. And on that note, countermeasures for aircraft, tanks etc built into the game so that we dont need custom scripts that lag it to hell

1. A fully featured mod toolkit released with the game that allows us to easily create our own island, but also the ability to turn the water into never ending dirt for those who don't want an island. Yer, Visitor is ok, but a 3d editor that allows you to make maps quicker would be nice. Still if Visitor is included it'll be fine 2. Trenchworks, and the ability to make them. Agreed, this would be cool, but the engine probably couldnt do it and modern warfare dont really use them anyway 2. Enterable buildings. Already done, but more would be great 3. Buildings that are broken into sequencial pieces and then can be blown apart, piece by piece. Also allowing for explosive charges to blow holes in walls to move from building to building in urban combat. Already covered 4. Barbed wire, which can be cut or destroyed by explosives. That would be cool 5. More physics calculations involved in determine the interaction between vehicles and weapons. World War 2 Online being an example of a game that modeles the thickness of every armor plate around a tank, what type of armor it is, and then calculates whether a given round penetrates based on it's mass, velocity, ammo type, etc. Then things like armor spalling can happen, shrapnel, individual crew members are killed disabling part of the vehicle, components are destroyed but the vehicle remains alive in other ways, etc. It's possible, but I dont think BIS has the time to do it, Company of Hero's does it to some degree, its a hard thing to code in, I think the whole engine would need a redo which would be out of the question.

Su-25 Â Flaspoint to Arma conversion
ricoadf replied to eble's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: COMPLETE
In reguards to converting stuff from OFP to ArmA, does anyone know if its allowed when you cant contact the origional creator? As long as you state that its their work I'm wondering if it would be accepted for uncontactable people. Just a thought. -
Actually the ADF used the scorpion turret on some M113's and called it the MRV (Medium Recon Vehicle), it was basically a standin vehicle until we got our ASLAV's  See: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Puckapunyal-M113-MRV-1-1.jpg I've done alittle MRV in arma for fun value (model), havent coded it or anything, might be interesting to finish tho Â
-
New or old, carriers cost alot to keep running, if anything older ones cost more due to the age of the ship, not to mention supplying the buggas. And where iN Sahrani can they dock to replenish? :P Damn nice M113's there, looking great
-
Carriers are expensive tho, even the small amphibious ships cost an arm and a leg lol. An example is the Canberra Class that the RAN is buying: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canberra_class They aint cheap lol, even britain and US are cutting down on their carrier spending.

G'day guys, As most of you know ADF mod has started to port ourselves over to ArmA. However I have received a few requests to finish it in OFP and make an OFP release. I would like to know what the community thinks and if this is worth doing or a waste of the mod's time. Alot of our stuff is in OFP atm so it wont be hard to do. Suggestions?
-
G'day, I was wondering if there was somewhere I could get the Warfare MLOD's (aka the structures, HQ's etc). This is for a mod which I'd like to make a varient of warfare to fit with and having the wrong looking vehicles in the factories etc looks bad If they havent been released, any chance BIS would do it Rico

Addonmakers Please Don't Use Default BIS folders!
ricoadf replied to Yoma's topic in ARMA - ADDONS & MODS: DISCUSSION
Personally this is common practise, and have been doing it with any addon/mod I download or edit for years in OFP
