    Little birds vs c-130

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (Adammo @ June 24 2002,05:14)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Ok guys I just finished reading the thread about the C130 and how I haven't posted new pics. This stuff takes longer then I would have ever thought to get it as close to professional quaility as possible ( for a novice) I started working on the C130 and got about 80% or so finsihed with it.. About the same time I started working on a Oh6. Then people started asking about Little Birds. Â So I started working back on the OH6 models.. I posted a few pic and people made comments.. I beta tested with 4 people and I kept improving it.. So far I have 3 choppers ready to go. Oh6 Â Ah6 Â Oh6 1st is Resistance.. 2nd and 3rd are US Army. I decided to put full time work in the choppers to get them out at the same time that Resistance was deployed. (released) I posted more pic and people made more comments.. I think I have them finished as people would like to have them. My next project will be to get back on the C130 and get it finsihed. <span id='postcolor'> Whooo Hoooo!!!! Thanks Captain. Great texturing!!! They look really sweet now. I like the detail you put in them like the little silver part around the engine exhaust pipe in the rear. I'm really glad that you made them solid black like the real things, and of coarse the OH-6 like the Vietnam era models. Great work!! I think I'm looking forward to this Littlebird addon pack and your C130 just as much as I am looking forward to the OFP-Resistance expansion pack. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

Oh the Chinese MK19? Yeah the real thing shoots in an arc at anything past 100 meters if I remember correctly. But it's real easy to walk rounds up to a target. Once it's on target you can blow the living hell out of it. I agree however that GFX-707's MK19 could use a little more distance but still it's not bad the way it is. It can still get some fairly respectable distance with a bit of elevation. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

I don't think he was going to retexture them but I may be wrong. As for the other question about movable miniguns I dont know, but that would be cool if he made them like Martin's minigun on his UH-1. But if not, that wouldn't be that bad either. I had no problem aiming the minigun on Keg's Kiowa Warrior addon and that one didn't move. Plus Adammo's AH-6 has dual miniguns. Dual guns that fire simultaneously is something that hasn't been seen on any addon in OFP. Anyways, I'm really looking forward to his Little Bird addon! Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

    M224 60mm mortar

Can't wait to see it. Is it going to be an actual AA gun? It would be extremely cool if the rounds blew up near the aircraft if they pass within so many feet of enemy aircraft. But I imagine that would take some SERIOUSLY hardcore scripting and may be impossible. But it might be worth consulting some of the .cpp scripting experts to see if they think it's do-able. If not, at least make them shoot at aircraft and it could be used in conjunction with a AA script. I have one around here somewhere that allows for aircraft to set off a trigger that starts explosions over the target area. You can adjust the height of the explosions, time between explosions and the amount of ammo used also so overall it's a fairly versatile script that should work well with your addon. Only bad thing is that it's an external script. But anyways any map maker worth a damn should be able to use some basic scripts like that one. I'm looking foward to that big gun! Anyways, I guess it's a moot question since you already have the basic airframe. Just a little tweaking of the USMC Uh-1 I imagine would make it look like a single engine UH-1. I think Martin's Hueys are fine, although they really need to be imported to Oxygen so that rocket pods and dual miniguns can be added more easily to make a "Huey Hog". I'm surprised nobody is helping him with that. The twin engined UH-1 everyone seems to be having a pissing contest over is nice and all, but it's only appropriate for U.S. Marine Corp missions for anyone that cares about mission realism. I'm sure people will use it for Vietnam missions but I think Martin's are MUCH better for that. At any rate, the MH-60 Pavehawk addon is ALREADY finished and we're talking about it simply because no one else has bothered to publicize it much. Weapons with lanterns?

Which is so cool! I was also informed that the Challenger 2 tank is invinceable (cept from direct nuke hit), the only way to stop it is by blowing its tracks off, and that only stops it moving, it can still use its weapons! The armor on the C2 is one of the closest gaurded secrets in the British army and inteligent agencys!<span id='postcolor'> Thermal imaging would be cool, but currently that's mainly used only on armored vehicles and aircraft in real life (it's very expensive technology). At any rate, I don't think any addon would be able to create the look of a thermal imager. As for the Challenger 2 tank... NO tank is invincible. There are many ways to kill even the most heaviest armored tanks in the world. Heavy AT mines for example can destroy most tanks. Also most tanks are vulnerable in their rear section as well as on their roof unless they are equiped with large amounts of reactive armor on the roof tops. Fortunately very few 3rd world countries use "top-attack" weapons however some guerilla forces like the Chechnyan rebels, are highly skilled in firing rockets from steep cliffs or buildings down onto the tops of tanks and thus destroying them. They are also experts at making anti-tank mines. The Israelies for example have the Merkava main battle tank which is widely regarded as one of the most heavily armored tanks in the world. However they lost two to the Palistinians with the loss of most of their crews. They were destroyed by large shape-charged explosive mines that were detonated as the tanks drove over them. In addition often turret rings are vulnerable as are the optics and as you mentioned, the treads. Finally a large Air to ground missile like the Maverick will most likely destroy any known armored vehicle as will laser guided bombs such as the ones the F15 Strike Eagle II's used to destroy so many tanks during the Gulf War. At any rate tanks like the M1 and the Challenger 2 have yet to face the latest generation of modern anti-tank weaponry or air attack from fighter bombers and attack helicopters so it's unknown (except to the military) how well they would stand up to such attacks. The most lethal threat they faced during the Gulf War was probably Iraq's Milan guided missles, however I have found absolutely zero reports on their usage, leaving me to believe that the guidance system on these AT missles was successfully jammed or decoyed. The IR laser however is invisible to the naked eye and the little dot can only be seen using night vision devices. For hunting, some may use a high power infrared spotlight to better illuminate an area, however generally most animals that someone might want to hunt at night can see the IR light, so generally that's not a good idea unless it's an animal that tends to freeze at the sight of spotlights like deer. </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (Ruskiesrule @ June 21 2002,12:25)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">I've just been back to an army base, and NV is really crap, i've never actualy used real NV before but it really sucks. You can only see a small bit of your vision with NV (TOTALY MAD TUNNEL VISION) (worse than the NV in flashpoint) and you can't even see as well as you can in flashpoint, the real name for NVG is Image intensifier, because it simply makes pritty dark things brighter and things in pitch black (and i mean almost no light) are still un-seeable! And if lights are so bad why don't they give the car and truck drivers NV instead of making them use headlights?<span id='postcolor'> I agree with the tunnel vision thing, but while perhaps the Russian NVG's are crap, the ones I've used in the U.S. Army are quite good. They also flip up easily if you need them out of the way. But they give a HUGE advantage on most night time missions against an opponent that does not have night vision equipment. Of coarse alot depends on the amount of clouds and things like that but usually even on a cloudy night they still work fairly well. As far as using a flashlight, as someone else mentioned that is pure suicide using a flashlight in regular infantry combat. You would NEVER EVER EVER EVER use that unless you are manning a huge spotlight on a guard post or something. And even that is not a good idea as they tend to draw a lot of fire during an attack. For those who have seen flashlights on weapons, look at who is using them. They are almost exclusively used by SWAT teams or for any type of operation requiring close quarters combat indoors. They are used not only to help illuminate a room but also for quick targetting. They would be next to useless past 10 meters and in an outdoors enviornment would make you a quick and easy target. Lasers are also sometimes used however, but even these are not a widely used because the red laser is easily spotted by the enemy. What is used by some military forces are IR lasers that are only detected using NVG's or night vision scopes mounted on the weapon (with the laser). This way the enemy does not see the laser dot floating around on himself or his commrades unless he is wearing NVG's as well. The downside is that with some (if not all) of the IR lasers you have to be careful not to point it at your own eye or your buddy's eyes because they can cause permanent damage. At any rate unless you make the flashlights for SWAT style missions (maybe using Adammo's FBI unit addon which is excellent by the way) then a flashlight is a bad idea. Of coarse the AI in OFP will probably not know the difference but it's just not very realistic. The night is dark for a reason. What I think needs to be improved is that the AI should NOT be able to see as well as they do in the dark without NVG's. That part is very unrealistic in OFP. I hate getting shot from 200 meters by some Russian who doesn't have any NVG's. Depending on the cloud/visibility range settings, on most nights AI night vision should be limited to 20-20 ft depending if the enemy enters an area that is illuminated or not. Anyways...that's something for BIS to work on. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

At the very last follow your leader so you can engage in some down and dirty combat. I love it when the Chechnyans come running down into the forest and try to outflank you. Things get really hairy when you got bad guys running around all around you. M224 60mm mortar

I thought I saw someone mention how the AI weren't that accurate with it, but I can't find that post now. But at any rate to GFX-707, I just wanted to let you know that I think the accuracy is fine. Please DON'T make them as accurate as the regular rifle-grenade soldiers. Real mortar attacks are often not very accurate and just put rounds into the general area unless they got a really good forward observer and a high speed mortar crew (with a good mortar and ammunition). I love the way it is right now. The mortars just land all around the targets and cause mayham and confusion occasionally landing right on target and taking out vehicles and men. Also...by exploding near them but not on them, often I see soldiers get injured from shrapnel which I thought was very realistic. It felt very real seeing a guy next to me scream and fall down wounded from a shrapnel wound to the leg. That's a lot more realistic I think then seeing almost every single mortar round landing right on top of the target. So keep that part as it is. The only things that I think could be improved are these: 1. The commander won't give the order to fire when I try to command a mortar. But I think this could be because I tested it on version 1.40 (long story). 2. It would be nice if you figured out how to get the mortar crews to engage targets farther then 500 meters. 1000 meters would be perfect...well if the mortar can go that far. But currently often at 500 meters they don't engage. I think the mortar can hit at little bit farther then that, but maybe not. If there's any way you can figure out how to extend the range that would be awesome, but if not then that is ok also. Overall I REALLY love this addon. It is a truly excellent piece of work!!! I would highly recommend that you take up Walker's offer on using that script for long range indirect fire. Or at least have that script as an option to use even if it's an external script that has to be put into the map editor. If not then I can always just wait for Walker's mortar for missions requiring long range mortar attacks possibly for multiplayer missions where you have to support other players that act as your spotters. That would be sweet! Anyways, keep up the excellent work. Your mortar is going into action immediately on Orangeland where it is defending a beach against an amphibious assault by the U.S. Marine Corp....except the player is a Marine... I find it more exciting to be on the receiving end of the artillery...not knowing when that next artillery round will have your name on it. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

That will help ALOT with the slow framerate problem. The main culprit is just all the buildings on the map and I've already reduced the number to a minimum. But hopefully I'll be able to reduce it a little bit if I get this single player respawn script working properly that will allow me to reuse the same enemy soldiers over and over again. New unofficial addon

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (Scooby @ June 18 2002,11:38)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">They werent implying that weapon would be ineffective. They were just pointing out that firing with it does not feel that impressive as firing with other weapons such as Apilas, LAW and NSV feels like. AGS-17 is a great weapon. Though in Finland its use is mostly limited to urban areas because woods are so thick that you would end up injuring yourself and friendly troops.<span id='postcolor'> I hope you are right. As for the problem with woods, I don't know about the AGS-17 but the MK19's rounds have a fuze that activates only after it clears a certain distance (I think 50 meters but I'm not for certain on that). The reason for the timed fuze is to avoid accidents such as the one that you mentioned. Still on occasion there are rounds that are defective and accidents do happen, but all in all they're not too dangerous to fire in thickly wooded areas although that's generally not a good idea as they may deflect upward or sideways and go past the minimum distance to arm and then explode on some friendlies. However at very close range, if you hit someone directly with one of those 40mm rounds it will either go through him without exploding (making a huge hole in the process), get stuck in them (again with a big hole in them) or it kills them from the massive blunt trauma. So at close range it turns into a machine gun with really big bullets. LOL! Gun crews also wear flackvests to minimize injuries if there is an accident where a defective grenade goes off at close range or while the weapon is being loaded or while a jammed weapon is being cleared. Last time I fired the Mk19 a weapon got jammed (when they jam they often jam badly) and we had to clear the area as a single person wearing a flackvest and kevlar helmet worked to unjam a round that had gotten stuck rather badly. That way if it exploded he would be the only one injured. Also during most training on the MK19 "flashbang" training rounds are normally used for safety as well. But even the flashbang rounds can still produce shrapnel when they go off. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

    Lost brother's merkava

It looks great BTW <span id='postcolor'> How do you know that it won't be released for months? If they really got on the ball, I imagine it could be released very soon. I imagine that right now they're trying to figure out how to model the interior which is notoriously difficult to do for tanks. Just look at the AAV-7 or the Sherman tank addons. Plus it's very difficult finding screenshots of the interiors of some of these tanks. At any rate, I can't wait to see that tank even if the interior is cheezy. The Merkava MBT is my all time favorite tank! I mean look, the turrent even has dreadlocks on the back. You gotta love a tank with dreadlocks. LOL! (I'm kidding those things hanging on the end of the turret are chains designed to stop RPG's from hitting the turret ring). Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>

It will be WAY better..<span id='postcolor'> Uh....why will they be better...other then being black? Also if I remember correctly on the Tales of War versions the front bubble canopy of the helicopters looked a little bit off and some parts weren't quite done to scale. Capt. Moore's also have extremely high levels of details....hell you can even see the belts of ammo feeding the miniguns. But I was a bit disappointed to hear that they only would work with version 1.60. But still...good things will come to those who wait. As far as which is definitely better...I don't think that will be obvious until both addons are out and we all have a chance to test them out thoroughly. Chris G. aka-Miles Teg<GD>
