Having a Life and playing Arma 2 Combined Ops...
EDcase replied to Ripsaw5165's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
It certainly is a struggle to balance family life with ARMA. It may not be as strong as drugs but there certainly is an addiction to the endorphins and adrenalin that come from playing ARMA :coop: I've been playing since OFP in 2001. Other games I tried just didn't have the staying power ;) He doesn't play often but my son(5) enjoys exploring and using civilian cars, bikes and boats. He's started learning to fly helicopters. No use of weapons yet. (Any vehicle with weapons has no ammo) -
ArmA2 / OA (low) performance issues
EDcase replied to R3fl3x's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
Strange. Your system should be running ARMA beautifully. All I can suggest is try with no mods and no OC (Just to be sure) I don't use Steam version so can't tell if there might be a problem there. I guess it automatically updates? EDIT: your ram clock isn't right. My CPU is at 3.25Ghz and ram is at 1556 -
This is perfectly normal (and realistic) flight behaviour. ARMA has NOT got the flight model wrong. Yaw becomes less effective with higher forward speeds due to the speed of the tail rotor. Above a certain speed helicopters will fly much like a plane in semi-level flight. (In reality Yaw dominance varies alot between different helicopters)

Low Fps new card (5870) plz help
EDcase replied to Marc15yo's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - TROUBLESHOOTING
I upgraded from a GTX285 to HD5870 and got at least 10fps better. In empty desert I get ~90fps. You cannot put everything on highest settings tho. I prefer smooth gameplay to super high gfx settings so only push up the visual enhancements that are really important to you and keep as much as possible lower. As mentioned: Make sure VSync is OFF in ARMA and CCC Frame drops during play are probably texture loading and buffering so the HD is struggling. An SSD will help. ( I have 30Gb SSD just for ARMA and get few stutters) I also keep textures on NORMAL and DEFAULT All AI units are handled by CPU so that will become the bottleneck in busy missions and putting gfx to lowest will not help. (If you reach the CPU limit you can put up gfx settings a bit without much fps hit) -
I've got a BenQ 1920x1200 and it runs about 2fps slower than 1680x1050 Might be your scaling method as this can be done by the graphics card or by the monitor itself. Its set in CCC controls under 'Desktops & Displays' at the bottom click the little black arrow next to the monitor and select 'Configure'

Yeah, I ran it as Admin XP SP3 mode but couldn't get it to activate with hotkeys or making it always on. Maybe ATI will have stereo built into a future driver release. (Has been mentioned)

I think the HUDs don't work in 3d but not sure. Zrad, I tried IZ3d but it didn't work for me (HD5870). Maybe I didn't set it up right. Lol, Killakaze. Thats a funny spoof vid. :D

Its very hard to suggest settings because everyone has different opinions. For example I prefer high fps so will reduce graphics settings. Here are settings you could start from and tweak to your preference. I'm just going to list values in the same format they are seen in config screen. Normal____Normal___Low Normal____High_____Very small Default____High_____16:9 Normal____Normal___Disabled

Thanks for your reply Zrad. You could upload to Vimeo. Not as popular as Utube but no copyright problems and better quality...

Nice vid Zrad. Can you tell me how to activate the 3d anaglyph mode with an ATI card? (Which drivers are you using?) I did try it when I had an NVidia card and it was fun to experience but I woulnd't want to play for hours in anaglyph. (after a few minutes my brain started to adapt my vision and I saw blue tint on left eye and red on right after I taking off the glasses) THESE 3d Stereo glasses with head tracking would be my dream to use with ARMA... TOTAL IMMERSION (apart from peripheral vision :() Assuming head tracking worked accurately without lag Res is a bit low at 1280x768 but I could live with that ;)

Would an SSD help improve performance for Arma
EDcase replied to wingnut1186's topic in ARMA 2 & OA - GENERAL
I've got a 30Gb vertex2 SSD just for ARMA. Very happy with performance (compared to HD) -
An SSD will help with the texture loading but I still have my textures set to NORMAL and DEFAULT. I seem to get smooth gameplay when I leave Vsync ON in game (OFF in CCC) and turn ON TrippleBuffer in ATI CCC Sys: Win7-64 i7 920 @3.25 HD5870 30Gb Vertex2 SSD just for ARMA EDIT: Yeah, VERY important what Polecat mentions below. Make sure to defrag your drive. Also if you only have one physical drive its better to install ARMA to its own partition.

I have a normal HD for OS (Win7-64) and a small 30Gb ssd (Vertex2) for ARMA. Cheapest option and works great. The GPU will be working hard when there are few AI and graphics settings can be set quite high with good fps. As more AI units are introduced the CPU becomes more loaded untill it becomes the bottleneck. You know the CPU is fully loaded when lowering gfx settings does not increase fps much. So test Zagrabad empty to see optimal fps. Anything lower will be due to cpu load.

Rest in peace Maj. Winters. He looked like a normal grandad when I met him on BoB. Its amazing that all those hard experiences did not show on his kindly face. "The real heroes where the men who didn't return." Young people today have few struggles to make them men.

Hi and welcome papadan, Don't be discouraged. All newcomers to ARMA go through the painful adaptation from shootem-up to battlefield simulation. ;) I guess you are talking about the CTI (Capture The Island) mission where you must take control of the towns. Its not really meant for single player but more an introduction to test and learn the principles before playing online. Try to join a multiplayer game of CTI and follow players for a bit to get a sense of how they play... There are better versions of this game mode called Domination and Warfare BE. General gameplay rules for ARMA (my thoughts) The main thing with ARMA is to do things as if it were real. Sounds corny but until you pretend that you only have one life you will not be as careful looking for enemies. Looking around from inside a bush will help to conceal you from AI and human players. -Always try to keep something in front of you when moving forwards and stop behind something (Even a bush will partially block AI view). Always lean around obstacles and look carefully not just a quick sweep before moving again. -If you are spotted and run behind cover the AI will predict your movement based on your last known position and speed. Wait a moment before revealing yourself again otherwise they will be ready for you. Hope that helps a bit and keep at it :D

Ah yes, of course. I'm just talking about the visual and physics capabilities of CryEngine. The AI number/intelligence and map scale are other considerations we don't have much info about. ARMA still rules :D (If they could get everything else right I could probably live with smaller (1/2 ARMA size) maps if they were well designed...)

Since we've seen what the CryEngine is capable of these videos are certainly realtime not pre-rendered but I'm not going to argue the point with you ;)
-
Its not so complicated to understand... A realtime tech demo means that the 3d is calculated in realtime but there isn't any user input for control of characters/vehicles. So the animations are pre-programmed which is why the helicopter looks a bit unatural and linear but its all visualised in realtime so that is what it will look like. Check out this vid: (they are calling it VMR: Virtual Mission Rehearsal) SYUrbOvzlsQ "This video was produced with real time in game footage" It also says "Demonstrator" which means that the animations are probably pre programmed but it will look the same in the final product. CryEngine is just the visual and physics system used in a game. It has nothing to do with the game design itself. A game with the same (or better) characteristics as ARMA could be made with the CryEngine but BIS won't do it so stop asking...

Doubtful, there's not enough money in the PC sim market and too much piracy. They go with military/serious simulation contracts. (from their website) •Military marksmanship trainer •Nuclear power plant simulator •Investigative/debriefing simulator •Pre-visualization and marketing •Serious games training •Virtual Prototyping Their list of clients: •US Army •US Special Operations Command •Lockheed Martin •Thales •General Dynamics •Bechtel •Kapl •Cubic •Meggitt

Looks like Real Time Immersive Inc is using CryEngine3 to develop a military simulation which will be the rival of VBS. http://www.rt-immersive.com/?id=1 This is the next generation military Sim... (Sorry BIS) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYUrbOvzlsQ Unfortunately it'll probably be out of our price range...

Undoubtedly this tech will get faster and more responsive with time but I don't see how it can be implemented effectively in ARMA. Its mainly for body tracking so there would be no point getting it just to replace TrackIR. You have to sit too far from the screen to be able to use it at a desk so too far to combine with keyboard. It would be amazing to use this with VR goggles for total immersion but there are just too many controls in ARMA for this system to replicate. As people have stated before you need an easy way to control movement, stance, squad commands etc. The only way I can imagine it working would be to have a pseudo weapon that can be used to aim and fire which also has separate buttons on the grips to control the game. (similar to the acrade light guns) But that would need alot of extra buttons.

I'm on 10.11 too (5870) and I'm quite happy. No big problems. Its just that when new drivers come out there is that slim posibility that it will be improved.

Anyone tried Catalyst 10.12?
