    Arma 3 Community Alpha - Announcement!

    I can't remember if it was a printed interview or one of the early A3 videos which stated they had improved the optimization so ARMA3 should run about the same as ARMA2 even with the improved graphics etc. Of course no one will be able to run everything on max just as with ARMA2.
  2. Perhaps getting a certain distance away from chasing zombies could make them loose interest. So using the terrain and obstacles could be used as tactics to get rid of them. Different speed zombies would be cool I think. I haven't read all 886 posts so I duno if its been suggested yet but what about an element of warfare construction where groups of survivors can work together somehow to build an outpost/base against zombies and bandits. Would need some kind of collectable material for construction like wood. This would help to create a much needed goal to the scenario.

    There are lots of different gamers. From those who want immediate fast action to the milsim fans. The great thing about ARMA is it can cater to all. (OK, anims are a bit clunky for fast paced gaming) Mods like this will make ARMA more popular (more money for BiS) but won't affect the milsim play, so everyone can be happy.

(argh u beat me to it Tremanarch) Yes, get 'Combined Assault' as it contains 'ARMA2' & 'ARMA2:Operation Arrowhead' There are also 2 addon packs you can get: PMC: Private Military Company BAF: British Armed Forces These contain new weapons, vehicles etc. If you do not have these you can still play on servers that have them but you will see low res versions of those units and equipment. Once you have it installed, check the version number (Bottom right of main menu screen). It should be 1.6 followed by other numbers. Good luck (Remember it has quite a steep learning curve so give it time)
  7. (This may already be implemented and just not shown yet) From the demo vids something was bugging me about the ability to change into an enemy uniform and then be able to freely move among them. Its just too easy and in real life it would work but for only a short time. There should be a time limit being near an enemy AI where he/they will get suspicious of you, then realize you are enemy and attack. This would not happen if you just run/walk past them all. Only if you are near an AI for a certain amount of time. Perhaps when the AI gets suspicious he can come to you to ask a question which you can't answer so he will recognize you as enemy and attack. With conversation system perhaps you could have a multi choice answer which if you get wrong will trigger recognition.
  8. After reading pages and pages it boils down to: 1: Improve animation system for smoother CQB. [Which is being done] 2: Enhance controls. ie. separate fire mode selector button and grenade throw (with better control) 3: PvP missions with carefully chosen weapons to even the teams. (There are so many available that the balancing is only down to choice) Limnos and the smaller Stratis will have pleny of locations for close CQB PvP type games up to full island warfare. It has been stated that most buildings will be enterable. BiS have said that they will concentrate on making training missions (possibly in the campaign) to help people learn controls and get into the ARMA style of play.
  9. My notes after playing several hours: -I find the production too slow. Only one item at a time and each one takes ages even if all the islands are equally producing and mining (no defence) I even tried with settings giving me almost all the islands at start and its still really slow. Its very frustrating to lose equipment when a Manta or Walrus is destroyed and takes ages to produce then get supplied. -You could say the 'Supply barge' is a submarine to explain why its not visible. -The lists and graphics are too monotone blue. eg empty items could be pale red and full could be pale green. -Needs error sound when item cannot be produced/loaded etc. At the moment it makes same sound if you load an item and if you cannot. -Option to delete save games -I would suggest renaming "Undock" to "Launch". (Would be good to have a 'Launch' and 'Dock' button under each vehicle icon) -I don't know if its something I did wrong or a bug but if any of my islands are attacked or taken then all production stops. -Mantas could have more turbulence when flying in bad weather? -I would like to have a freeview option for vehicles to look around. -More external camera views of vehicles like a more distant follow cam. (to appreciate the great rope dynamics of lifting a Walrus) -Bug minor: In snowstorm Walrus 1st person look up and snow disappears. -Bug minor: Report of bad weather even when clear. -I've also had several crashes while attacking enemy carrier with plasma cannon. (maybe the AI is a poor loser :D ) Game looks and sounds great. Very atmospheric. Would like to have longer viewdistance in good weather. Will there be more music during gameplay in final? Well done so far guys!

    Ragdolling players without killing them?

    Ragdoll is one of the things I'm most happy about but I don't really want to see bodies flying all over the place if they are next to a satchel charge. For grenades and being further from large explosions would be great but being caught in a large explosion or tank shell should make the body vanish altogether. (Preferably in a red cloud) Being hit by a vehicle is a great idea. I don't know if it will be possible to transition from a ragdoll pose (random) back to animation to make them get up again. We'll have to wait and see. How about poison/sleeping gas....?

    The trouble with getting people into Arma

    I think we need a compromise here because the commarose only has 8 options it will get too cluttered to replicate all the commands. What about a number key as it is now to bring up the appropriate rose such as move/target/stance/engagement etc. I would like to see a rose replace the default mouse wheel options as its a pain so select the right one when under fire and moving the mouse alot. Then that creates a problem because you cant turn while the rose it active. :( DOH! I don't mind what BiS does as long as they keep the number key combos as a backup. Once you get used to them they really are the fastest way to issue commands and there's no reason why BiS can't implement both systems.

    Firefight Dynamics in ArmA 3

    Are you guys playing online MP with v1.60? It may be that the machine/server you are playing on is under powered (CPU) as this drastically reduces the AI 'Intelligence' and response time. I am constantly seeing AI run behind walls/trees then lean and fire. It gets very hard to tell AI from human sometimes. The AI do seem to get worse the closer you are to them sometimes. The only complaint I have at the moment is that they can pinpoint your location after you fire a single shot.

    Opinions on manual gun cocking?

    I'd like to see manual cocking of bolt actions and shotguns but NOT with the fire button. Why not press the reload button twice?
  16. That's an issue with the "Reality Engine" renderer not the graphics card. There is nothing that can fix it.

    Does anybody know how many DoF A3 will have?

    Zoom (Translating head forward & back) is one of the axes that can be controlled with TrackIR. Personally I don't use all available axes inTrackIR: -I don't use "Roll" (head lean side to side) This will be used in ARMA3 for helicopters. -I don't use "Y" axis (head move Up/Down) Very hard to move head up and down when sitting on a chair. Although it will probably be available, I don't think this will be used much in ARMA3. So 4 axes used at the moment: YAW: Look left/right PITCH: Look up/down "X": Translate side to side for leaning. "Z": Translate forward/back for zoom. (not used much but handy sometimes)

    Does anybody know how many DoF A3 will have?

    How can you have 15 degrees of freedom? You can only move your head in 6 axes. ARMA3 will have 6DoF in helicopters at least (the demo of TakeOnHelis that ran in ARMA2 did anyway) Of course this means some form of head tracking will be required.

    If you have the computer already and have money left over then you can get ARMA2 now to get used to it. ARMA2 versions: ARMA2: Combined Operations (This includes the original "ARMA2" and "ARMA2:Operation Arrowhead" Upgrade) ARMA2:free (Do a search. This free version only has lowres textures and some things are missing but it allows you to play online in ARMA2 servers) ARMA2:Operation Arrowhead (Newest version of ARMA but does not contain Chernarus map and some weapons/vehicles from ARMA2) ...Or just wait for ARMA3... (Hopefully summertime) http://www.arma3.com I'd say ARMA2 helicopter handling is a bit easier than BF3 as you don't loose altitude so much when banking but ARMA3 helicopter flight model will be much more realistic and harder than BF3.

    I tested with anaglyph and appart from the fire and high quality shadows not working there is also the problem of weapon sights. If you use the iron sights of a weapon the eye separation is too great so you get a double image of the weapon which makes it very difficult to aim and very tiring on the eyes. Perhaps BIS can experiment with the interocular settings.

    I don't know anything about the process but since they did it for OFP I thought it might be possible for ARMA3. More work of course but far bigger audience and cutting down a game is easier than developing I would think.

    To be honest I think a cut-down version for consoles may be a good thing for the PC ARMA community and BIS. - Many more console players so BIS gets more money - More noobs on consoles so fewer on PC servers while they learn. - Acts as testing gound so those who like gameplay style and are serious would invest in PC to play 'full' game. Essentially the console versions would be like recruitment for the PC version so we would have fewer noobs/griefers and give BiS more money at the same time. -Everyone wins... Of course the main development would still be on PC so its not dumbed down and it would act like a demo for the many console users.
  23. -Rotor blades and aircraft props that do damage to players. Could be server option. (If its hard to implement for AI then let them pass through unharmed but human players would be killed) -Rotor blades get destroyed if they hit anything while flying instead of making the helicopter spontaneously explode or bounce around.
  24. Respawn option is a mission parameter. In fact most missions do allow respawn so having to wait for the end of a mission is quite rare on most games. As for your main question: It depends on you really but personally I think the "spluttering Ferrari" BIS has made is FAR superior than any other FPS game at the moment. MW2 and BF2 look good and are fun for a bit but the gameplay is soooo repetitive and the maps are so small.

    Major issue with multiplayer

    As has been stated before I doubt a built in mod manager could handle several people trying to download all the required mods at the same time. Mods are not unified enough and conflicts exist. That's the problem with such an open ended system. What the ARMA3 server browser needs is more info about a particular server. An info button that shows what mods are used, mission difficulty settings etc. These should also be incorporated into the search filter so that particular mods and settings can be included or excluded. More obvious colour coded list to show where mods are required.
