    Addon/Mod Ownership - Q&A.

Here it is: http://creativecommons.org/ This is the creative commons license website. It has a selection of pre-made, LEGAL licenses for creative works. It displays the licenses both in legalese, and in an easy to understand breakdown. It also supplies a small image tag to display with your works on the internet that will link to the license on their website. It has license pages for video, sound and textual intellectual property, etc. http://creativecommons.org/license/ This is where you select a license. You can build a custom one, or choose a pre-made one, such as a public domain license, a wiki license, the GPL open-source license, etc. I made my own and found the process to be quite painless. http://creativecommons.org/about/think Creative Commons has prepared a list of things to think about before you choose your own license. Among them, are questions like, ‘do you have the right to license the material you are licensing.’ For the OFP mod makers, in the context of this thread, it is possible for you to choose your own license. http://creativecommons.org/about/licenses/comics1 In case you’re having trouble understanding the gobble-dee-gook, creative commons has made a few cute little comics about the spectrum of rights and how the licenses work. They’re a light way to look at serious legal issues. I’m about to link to the licensing information of my own personal project. I’m doing this to reduce the workload of this post. Don’t view this as a plug. So, in order to protect the rights of the contributors, I sought out a limited license with some rights reserved. It allows the free distribution of the work, so long as it is intact, unmodified and unabridged and the work is appropriately attributed, and the license information is displayed with it. I take this to mean that it cannot be used as part of a larger production. For our uses, though, the models and such will be encoded, so releasing addon.pbo’s might require a stronger license for full protection. http://www.spacecolonization.net/2080/viewtopic.php?t=138 This doesn’t allow our own project members to do much with the work except look at it, so we developed an internal waiver agreement. That allows us to modify the work ONLY for the project. It also states that we can’t rewind time to get stuff we’ve already released back, but that if anyone decides to rescind their membership, that their property will be immediately extracted from the project software. http://www.spacecolonization.net/2080/viewtopic.php?t=143 So, if you want to modify a piece under our license for use, you have to be a member of the project, and you can only use it for the purposes of 2080. Also, the original author retains the right to his or her work. There are a great many permutations of licenses you can create. I think that you may reserve all rights without going through this process, and simply put, ‘all rights reserved.’ I hope that this post opens your eyes to the many possibilities there are to protect your own work to the extent that you want it. Being able to waive your own rights by agreement also opens the door to different levels of protection to different kinds of people (your mod group as opposed to other mod groups, for example). If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, and I’ll do my best to answer them. I’m only a user of these licences, however, and I don’t consider myself a legal expert of any kind.

    FFUR - Huge Release !!

I just finished a lengthy correspondance with T-bird in PM. In terms of FFUR, I don't think he will be willing to ask permission prior to incorperating mods into FFUR. This is the sense I got from his messages. So, not in lieu of my post to the addons rights board but prior to it, for all those concerned, I sincerely doubt he was change his policy at all. He's fairly firm on that. I'll present the creative commons license in the other thread soon as a method of recourse for those who are interested. This is not meant as a slight against FFUR, but the acknowledgement of an alternative point of view.

    FFUR - Huge Release !!

I fully support RockofSL's point. I think I got the gyst of it without reading the whole argument, although I respect the fact that it's heated and touchy. Given the attitude of BIS towards addon makers (ie, that they retain ownership of their own work), addons are not the property of the community, and the rights of their owners are fully retained. Maybe I'll post a blurb about the creative commons licensing scheme on that thread about addons and their rights. THis would be a good way for those who would like protection to get it in an easy but definitive way.

I could never survive skiing on that one mission. The tanks see you like you're driving a car. I just walked there with time compression on. It's much easier.

    Dynamic Destruction in AA?

They could have them stuck in the ground different depths. I was just saying that the tops are very similar. There's rubble on the bottom. This could mean that they are formed of similar 'atoms' or that this bridge starts the game broken. I'm a 3d artist and I have an eye for these things. I'm not saying that my word is law or that I couldn't be wrong or anything, but I feel strongly that those two legs are the same model of something... whether it be composed of atoms or just models of broken trusses.

    FFUR - Huge Release !!

We usually use Fas.org for this purpose, I have been impressed by the quality of those detailed descriptions on the russian website, that's why we decided to use it as main information source. Heh, never thought about contacting the authors of the website to ask'em to use their content, I hope you don't see that as a sign of disrespect or something... but just because of lack of time. But will inform'em as well, though. Certainly not, but I think it's important to give due credit. I work on a couple of open source game projects, and have done a lot of work researching licenses. I am also exposed to the concept of authority and plagerism in my studies as a college student. I'm sensitive to this sort of thing, and I thought I would let you know in the same spirit as the others who have pointed out any omissions in your attributions on this thread. I don't know the world of addons very well, but other things I do know of quite well, and I am able to contribute to the integrity of this, your magnum opus, in other ways. As with my other comments that you found dericive months past, don't worry about it. These comments are not pointed, and I'm not seeking to discredit you. It is not necessary to give them attribution if it's covered under fair use, or if their document license allows for it. This is something I'm not aquainted with in terms of that site. I'm not sure of a non-profit project has right to fair use or not, and I was only asking if you were sure it was alright. I was not indicating that it wasn't alright, only that it might not be. These are things you ought to investigate.

That blurb on the mg3 is c/p from the world.guns.ru site, and the picture is also knicked from there. Are you sure that that property is for free use without attribution?

    Dynamic Destruction in AA?

In that pic of the destroyed bridge, the two broken.. uh.. legs that are the same length also look like they have the same geometry on top. It looks like they are the same model.

Game plays different with bigger viewing distance?

I would just reduce the view distance for that mission, then put it back up.

  15. That happens in the buildings in the ruins in Tonal. The more you struggle, the farther from the ground you're pulled. You can move just enough to give you hope that you'll pop out of its hungry grasp only to be sucked back in like a spaghetti noodle.

    FDFMOD 1.4 OUT

I think I found another issue. There is a modern russian soldier in the Red Bridge coop mission. Those time travelling bastards!
  17. Personally, I love it when you're walking next to a destroyed building, and the building sucks you up and eats you.. and you're living there, being slowly digested over the course of a thousand years. Haha. Sometimes it helps to run and press the prone button. You sort of 'dive' out. I am also interested in the answer to this question.

    FDFMOD 1.4 OUT

Never Never NEVER do that to me again. Now come here so I can kiss you. edit: some time later- I found a small gripe. The elevators on your fokker fighter plane are reversed. The trailing edge should fall when the stick is pushed forward, and should rise as it is pulled back. Likewise, the aircraft's nose nose should point down as the elevator's trailing edge is pulled up, and fall as it is pushed down.

What sort of physics do you want for the heli's?

I think that the controls, as they are, are good. What I hate is the performance envelope, currently. It's not that I don't like the control scheme, it's that I'd like to have more control over the helecopter. Maybe some more altitude would be better. Also, having some very, very simple LOD for the island texture beyong the geometry draw distance would aid in making medium altitude flight seem like you're hovering over a fishbowl, like it is currently.

    ArmA Progress Updates

Apparently, Game2's system will be more dynamic and role-play oriented. The concept is that the game's events will depend on the player's actions, and that there will be no mission start/end screens as we know them today. They want the whole conflict to flow, rather than have it broken up by interludes to reset the stage in what is essentially a series of stand-alone missions.
  21. I just had this idea for a mod. I don't think I'll ever get to working on it, because I already have projects that demand my attention, but I thought I would share the concept with you guys. Anyways, this mod would take place in an alternate past, where the cold war quickly escalated into a third world war. War equipment for this mod would be 50's vintage, but with concept and scifi elements from that era. Warfare would be conducted using techniques of the general Patton school. It would be total war, harsh and brutal. Weapons and equipment would reflect the 50's/60's era total war scenario. Main battle rifles would have wooden furniture (such as the m1, m14 and ak47), and submachineguns would be limited to first or second generation types. War machinery would use the tanks of the day, but with all of the insane atomic nastiness of the military think-tanks of the day. Atomic tipped artillery shells (which would exist more as a plot device or scripted event) and (some) nuclear powered aircraft. Given the higher dependency on atomic weapons, most infantry would be equipped with some kind of protective suit. Concept aircraft of the 1950's and 1960's would have been rushed into production, so the more likely concepts like the x-109 VTOL aircraft and the Valkyrie bomber would have become operational. This would be Armageddon. It would be the war that is alluded to in so many post appocalyptic dystopian stories. Soldiers fighting for survival in what is becoming a radioactive wasteland alongside vehicles of insane power and utilitarian crudeness. If you would like me to seek out some examples of the machines I've talked about, just ask. Here's a model site that has the aircraft I mentioned, available by genre and era. Plastic Fantastic

Is this PC good for gaming ?? Any input is appreci

Oh, the shamelessness. Suffice it to say, that just about anything you throw more than $1500 at is going to be good for gaming. edit: I do agree, however, that AMD would be a better choice. Their technology is better AND cooler. (This information is about 6 months old).

50/60's era World War III mod

The story would just be that the concept of MAD would be identified. The cold war was a nuclear standoff to avoid total war. If total war had already started, perhaps you could write in that there was an agreement made at the outset not to employ any strategic nuclear arms, accepting that if the agreement was broken, that it would assuredly result in the end of the earth. This would be a good device for a story, aswell. Perhaps there is a partisan army trying to employ strategic arms? This is kind of the lazy way to go about it, but it's at least logical.

OFP runs better on old computers?

Sound advice. I think he did uninstall them and then reboot and install the new ones. It was a weird problem and his machine would not run IL2 or something with the Omega drivers installed. If the Omega drivers are better for some things, it's a little from column A and a little from column B.

OFP runs better on old computers?

My brother ran an ATI card with the omega drivers... and let's just say his experience was less than optimal. VPU recover being the operative noun, and reformat being the verb. edit: He could not just reinstall the old drivers over the omega ones. He could not get rid of the omega drivers at all! They would seem to uninstall... I mean, like an office employee that's madly typing away into word-womp, but appearing to anyone who can not see his monitor that he was moving worlds... it seemed to uninstall. ATI has some of the best driver programmers in the world for them. I highly doubt that some 3rd party developer is going to develop and release better drivers. Seeing as you are running an Nvidia machine, this doesn't really apply to you, but I would appeal to anyone reading this to think twice about running the omega drivers. It may not blow up in your face, but it's certainly a possibility. edit: Ho ho ho, maybe I have an answer. Try fiddling with your driver settings. It may be that you're really wasting a lot of cycles on repassing textures or something. If you turn that down, you may not notice much difference in quality but you may notice a huge gain in performance.
