    yes that would be the best. specially organic things (eg the welding seams) can be sculpted. but scratches :P meh just make sure you set the correct orientation or else youll have to mess around with the normal maps channels

    aye however you just need to take care of the polygons being pretty even and same sized for sculpting + you have to boost up the polycount pretty much upwards to do really fine sculpts as scratches etc. but sure works good for dents and so on. cheers

    @soul_assassin very nice 2 notes tho before you bake youre AO, make sure you have the smoothing groups set up correctly. otherwise you might get faulty surface renderings. also why dont you bake your AO map with the normal map applied on the low poly. it adds several details. + the cavity map can be simply taken from the normal maps blue channel. its more or less exactly the same. aswell, you of course can port it over to zbrush for detailing.. but adding scratches and such is far easier to do in photoshop and most of all alot faster and generates exactly the same results. trust me i´ve tried it. cheers

Imagine youve made an AK a while back and some years later you make a superb looking Bunkersystem whatever. now if you look back your ak, would you still accept it as an an artist to your now current standarts? i guess not. the same problem occurs if you release and release unique models over the time you end up with quality discrepancies of your very OWN PROGRESS! wich means you have some unique crap lookings units from the very beginnen and some badass models you made some days back. and now you would like to play with these all together... that would look to good dont you... its also a thing with mods. mods to THEIR thing. some can have more skilled artist than others and it would be pretty unfair if a mod team would just take another mods model, cause its already there.. and implement it in their very own mod and release it. thats not modding spirit. so either you release GAZILLIONS of models that have the same standart at once, or keep them updating and renewing once in a while or leave it to others.. thats how modding works... systems get better, game is getting updated, new techniques are being discoverd, new scripts and so on. and you want to settle with old models just because you dont feel like making a new one.. thats sad.

You know, actually it might even be a breach of copyright if you slap on colt markings on your m4 and release it to the public.... if its the actual model, i suggest to kick his ass.. if he build it according to pictures or from memory theres nothing wrong about it. 90 % of the models here are made in the SAME WAY! if you want to make an F-14, you cant come up with a completaly new design... or just a box with F-14 written over it.. we had these copyright discussions before, theres more appropriate threads for this than this WIP!!!! thread... so how about posting pictures instead of streching juristic paragraphs all over the place...

    wipman check out my scripts for my mercenaries that were released for ofp back then, they had workings lasers, visible but colors changed upon switching to NVG mode. it is pretty much possible.
  12. grab blender, its free. create your models there, import into oxygen. i guess youre not born with these skills. practice is the key. not knowing how to do certain things isnt an excuse actually :P ask around on forums, read tutorials, its all there. personally i´d find it strange, as an artist, to settle with my current skills, not trying to push things further again and again, but maybe thats just me..
  13. i guess thats only the case with the arma engine... the normal map implementation is A) screwy... and B) noone on this board that makes moddels seems to use hi-res models to derive the normal map from, but instead just uses photochop for the OVERALL normal map. no wonder you get lightning errors all over the model...
  14. some things to remember: if the surface IS NOT shape defining, eg rivets, and you cant see a very obvious change in shape when looking forn various angles, you leave it to the normal maps. if theres alot of geometrical change going on, eg on the edge of the tires, you also have to add more segments to that, so the illusion of actual roundness is not destroyed. the actuall surface might appear round from a perpendicular view but the low poly edge will disguise it. its a case to case situation also being dependant on the poly budget and functionality. @pandaPL actually thought about that the door at the back might have a funtion and actually swing open? @SoldierIsNotHistory please post a wireframe shot from oxygen so we can help you better. and ingame screenshot doesnt really help...

  16. @Young Eagle it looks perfectly ok check the mesh for doublefaces/edges or 2-point-polygons. oxygen sometimes screws up upon importing meshes. another idea might be to triangulate complex surfaces (eg that hook-thingy in the middle front of the turret), or surfaces that share more than 4 vertices in general, as oxygen triangulates it upon import, but usually not in the most suiting way. no real critichs from me, cept for maybe that the long part of the barrel could eventually have less segment, but if the polybudget allows it its fine. are those plates that are connected with the grid double sided polys or are they "massive" eg made from a cube? if theyre made from a cube, make them a simple plane object and add a normap map later on to fake the thickness. saves some polys you can invest elsewhere.

  18. ok heres some early early early pics of some stuff ive started working on VSS Vintorez atm (ok ok its been already issued since the late 80´s.. so its got some kinda sentimental meaning to me haha ) right now it just uses diffuse maps. no spec or normal maps right now it can be easily disassembled and reconfigured into an AS Val piccies Other weapons planned are the OC-14 Groza, and SV-98 amongst others, which im not going to reveal for now cheerio!

Well it looks alright. 8k tris might eventually be a bit TOO much for 3rd person use. but for first its alright. then on the other hand it sure wont be used in a massive way like an ak or m16/m4 @messiah very nice jackal u got there. the texture is a bit bland for my taste tho. pretty factory-new, but it guess youll change that

    yea my ak has more polys than a BIS tank or the a10.. whats the point of creating new models then? do you ever reload? i pretty often see not only the barrel an the ironsight... dont like it, dont download it.. simple as that.. now cut it out.
