anyone remember m1 tank platoon?

Recommended Posts

prob my fave tank sim of all time , what i liked was that although it was the same game over again and again. the random maps and random force assignments made it ultimately re playable.

the core experience was 4 m1 tanks vs waves of russian armoured, mech , and choppers. sometimes you got bradly support., sometimes a chopper or even an artillery support.

depending how well you did in the 1st battle would mean either the next was an assault, or a hasty defence. after maybe a dozen battles the war was over. eaither you got pushed back and crushed, or you kept on roilling over the enemy and final battles would be kill as many as you can before the escape off map.

anyhow way back then i dreamed of modern games where you could hop out the tank, and fire the ATGM or operate the bradley.

well we are there now in the tech aspect but the campaign doesnt seem the same, if we lose a battle here its reload and try again to win it until we finnish all the scenario's.

Im no modder, but this is my suggestion for a variant of this game. some sort of campaign where the success of the 1st mission determines what the next battle will be. ie, an offensive or defensive battle. I can forgo the random maps. maybe even using the ones already provided, just depending on how badly the trouncing went in the 1st battle is how far back the player , or AI, is pushed , campaign ends when one side is forced into the sea.

just my 1st suggestion/ idea.

oh and another thing made it such an experience was that you could hop into any of your 4 tanks, and swap between positions. it would be nice of that was possible. is there way to make a mod where you can change vehicles form the map? im thinking not but that was a main feature of m1 that doesnt seem to carry on in modern games.

Dont need a mod for any of that, just a make a new mission. You cant actually have random maps, but you can randomize mission objectives.

Campaigns can be designed that actually, with campaign-specfic 'keys' depending on the outcome of earlier missions and stuff like that, the keys being used to tell the next mission what to do and what not to do. I'm not that well versed in campaign-making though, but it does sound like a technical nightmare if one wants big diversity in missions depending on earlier results. It is definitely doable though. Definitely. Just a lot of scripting-headache. :)
