[Solved] Arma2 sound corruption issues under win 7 64bit (realtek)

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have had massive amounts of problems with arma2 and sound problems

A lot of the times I start arma2 the sound is completely garbled digital noise.

This is under windows 7 64bit , on the same hardware under xp all works fine.

After a lot of driver re-installing , tweaking and fair amount of swearing

and even a chicken sacrificed by the light of the moon .... no result :(

Then by pure luck I stumbled upon it ........

I use a USB headset , its one of the MS Xbox360 wireless ones with a usb transceiver.

this type http://www.amazon.co.uk/Xbox-360-Wireless-Headset/dp/B000HKD6EK

So here is how it works , IF the headset is switched on when arma2 launches

the sound is totally screwed up.

IF the headset is off then the arma2 sound engine is fine.

NO other game I have does this , so I can only conclude that some audio

detection start-up code in arma2 is having problems with this secondary

audio device being switched on and this is what causes the sound to be borked.

Just thought I would share this in the hope that it helps others.

FYI I have a realtek onboard sound chip , which outputs to 5.1 and this

is where the main games sounds are piped , my headset is ONLY used for

TS2/3 voice comms , both in and out.

Yeah it pretty much works ok now with realtek (think mine is ALC888) onboard

sound chip.

Iam using the latest edition of the win 7 64bit drivers

I had the same problem as the OP. As soon as I read the post I realized back when I had no sound issues I also had no USB headset installed.

As soon as I disabled it in Windows the problem went away.

Windows 7/64 - Asus P7P55D LE (VIA 1828S onboard sound)

Sennheiser USB headset

Good catch!

Now just figure out how to make them work together.

I had the same, If I was talking on Ts3 and THEN started Arma I ended up transmitting white noise to Ts3. If Arma was already running Ts3 would be fine.

My h/set is a Trust 5.1, wired USB, it does have an inline on/off switch which is useful as Win7 can't decide if the h/s should be on or off at startup so 8 times out of 10 I have to turn the h/s off and on again !

I used to have all games sound, music, video etc coming to my 5.1 AV amplifier but this h/s is too good at stopping external noise so now I run everything through the h/s.

Thankfully I can alter individual user volumes in Ts3 now :)

To be fair to Win7, if you have 2 "sound cards" you can't expect the OS to correctly read your mind and use the right sound sources so you can't really say that this issue is solved as it can't be.

Win7 directs output just fine when things are setup right.

This is an ARMA 2 problem. I suspect the OP is correct in that it has something to do with the in-game comms code that was added to ARMA 2.

I used the same, sound card for game sound, usb headset for TS comms, setup in OFP and ARMA without this issue.
