Friendly AI not staying still (blowing cover)

Recommended Posts

Two days ago I played the ArmA II campaign again and noticed this problem:

If you are surrounded by enemy forces and you will tell an AI squad mate to go prone, stop moving and hold fire, he will still turn around on the floor no matter what tactical mode you put him into.

Stealth or Danger makes no difference. Maybe Caution or Secure would have worked, but that would be strange tactical choices to make him stop. Stealth mode should have had the effect needed.

Here's a demonstration of the problem:

<object width="640" height="505"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62vWDk_JkOQ&hl=de_DE&fs=1&rel=0"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62vWDk_JkOQ&hl=de_DE&fs=1&rel=0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="505"></embed></object>

I guess the cause of it is that the AI can't decide on which enemy he shall focus if there are more than one. Therefore he focuses on them all, one by one, turning around infinitely in the process.

If he is surrounded by enemies it will be especially easy to notice.

If you want to see the problem first hand and on your own computer, you will be able to download the mission I have used to reproduce the problem here.

Watch direction should work but the threat may override it. Basically it's due to the AI's limitation in movement while on the ground (they can't just move the gun back and forth). They're assessing threats and watching targets. It's a little annoying but they don't do it too often. You could try (and bare in mind I doubt this will work) with multiple AI members set one to watch each direction, or set each one to target an enemy. The logic being that maybe if they have someone else to cover the targets they won't feel the need to monitor them all.

I tried letting them watch in a specific direction by issueing the appropriate command, but they won't do what I order.

I tried every command which could have worked now and none worked.

Sometimes the AI stops doing it by accident but then starts again later.

Fortunately it's true that the problem only occurs seldomly (and at random).

I've upload a mission file with a save showing the problem for reviewing purposes and attached it to my original post in case someone wants to take a look.

some AI are average... Some have high ability, they may be better on commands, also how your Formation is and how they stop to do your command may not be in there best interest, need to make sure your formation is viable for there orders... Also range to the enemy seems to be a factor, if a enemy is closer to the right, then the command to look left may fall on deaf ears....
