Whats the deal with dedicated servers?

Recommended Posts

Every time i try to join one, it goes through the normal routine, and then it just gives me an error message that says password required. It doesnt even give me the chance to enter a password, it just boots me.

all dedicated servers are password protected. And if they're dedicated, why do they show up on gamespy in the first place?

GameSpy sees the servers by default I believe.

There are MANY servers that aren't Password Protected...

Gamespy sees the server if you add the line

reportingIP="master.gamespy.com";

to the .cfg file.

There are some servers that are not password protected and you can join these - eye allows you to add a password - GS should now do the same.

I suspect admins are using locked servers on GS as some form of free advertising - (Cant believe they dont know what they are doing smile.gif)

I meant the default sample.cfg has it already listed... thus most servers just copy and start the server.
