MehMan 0 Posted August 26, 2009 Alright, I love ambushes and I love playing guerilla style. So I made this small ambush scenarion where I need to rely on the AI(yeah I know, bad idea) to take out an APC. However, when I wanted to tell the AI to switch to RPG I found out that there's no command under the action menu and that Space+F doesn't work. Because the ambush took place in confined space by the time the AI soldier switched to the RPG the APC already went by and the ambush went to hell. Very impractical. I remember in resistance that there was a way to make AI soldiers to switch to RPG/LAW so that they were ready for action as soon as anything explodeable drove by. Now I can't recall how to do that, halp? How can I make the old OFP command menu appear instead of the context shit appearing? I prefer the old method compared to the spacebar-context menu mix. Also, the damn command system is really showing it's age and using the overhead view is pretty much a bad idea. I would really love to see more useful commands, one of them being Shoot on my lead, which would be useful in ambushes, as setting a command and then firing and the AI picking up on this is faster than tapping the tilde key and then 3-1. No keystroke vs three keystrokes is better in my view. And the context menu is bad. I hope this bit gets a through update in OA. I hope BI took notice when it wasn't just "fans" that were bitching when we saw the same old, but also reviewers who figured out that pressing 10 keystrokes while dodging RPGs is far from intuitive. Relemar 10 Posted August 26, 2009 you cant, they do it automatically. but rpg isnt an AT is it? dont know if they'll fire at it or not, set ai to engage at wil (the guy with the rocket) he should posititon himself and fire..
MehMan 0 Posted August 26, 2009 That takes too long, that's my beef. Before he goes from prone to crouch and before he gets his RPG out and fires it a good 30 seconds pass. And yes, an RPG-7 is an AT weapon. But it doesn't matter, because the AI will do the same with every AT weapon.
Zipper5 74 Posted August 27, 2009 (edited) Pressing Backspace brings up the traditional interface, just on the right side instead of the left. Press the corresponding F key to the unit you want, then 6 for Action, then the corresponding number for Weapon RPG/M136/etc... For example: F2 - 6 - 1 2 selects his M136. It should work for you too so long as the unit is under your command. If not, the command selectWeapon may be of use to you. Set his combat mode to Danger to have him bring out the M136. (F2 - 7 - 2) Edit: I just realized that you're right. The command to tell the AI to switch to their AT weapon is gone from the menu. Wtf? Well, tell him to target the vehicle (F2 - 2 - 1) and then set his combat mode to Danger. He should bring out his AT and say "Ready to fire". Atrocious 10 Posted August 27, 2009 I would use Fx - 7 - 7 (stay crouched) Fx - 3 - 5 (engage at will) - maybe even tell this to the AT guys before you tell them to stand up. Don't know if it is the fastest way but I'm pretty sure the unit will engage the APC as soon as they are in crouched position.
MehMan 0 Posted August 27, 2009 Hmm, nope, all I get is the actions for nearby objects, if you're anywhere near a town a bunch of close door actions. No switch weapon action or change weapon or use rpg. Hmm, beta thing? Testing is in order! EDIT: I would use Fx - 7 - 7 (stay crouched) Fx - 3 - 5 (engage at will) - maybe even tell this to the AT guys before you tell them to stand up. Don't know if it is the fastest way but I'm pretty sure the unit will engage the APC as soon as they are in crouched position. Not fast enough, his RPG is still not in his hands. That's the main problem, because it takes so long for them to switch weapons, recognize a stinking huge APC infront of them and fire.
sniper pilot 36 Posted August 27, 2009 What I do before an ambush is- I set up my guys in the postions that would make the best use of their abilities, tell the to hold fire and stealth. Here's the tricky part; as soon as we have first visual I start giving out QUICKLY targets (eg: 2 target man[not attack mind you])which results with the units replying with a satisfiying "ready to fire". Why is it satisfying? Because that means all my AT have their AT launchers out and are tracking the target. When everythings set I give the order to Fire/Engage at will/Danger, and the convoy is reduced to smothering ruins, any survivors having been picked off by my snipers. Works 98% of the time. (Ill try making a vid)
MehMan 0 Posted August 27, 2009 Yeah, that's what I usually revert to. Though, there might be a problem sometimes with the AI choosing to be dicks and firing their AKs when they have RPGs on their back. Can anybody remember what the command keybind is for target? I used to have it on right click, so I'd select a team member and right click on an enemy and he'd be given the target command. Now I need to go to the 2 submenu and that's bad when you have enough enemies around. The context menu again fails, because it only shows attack AIeven though you're prone, standing still, have issued a hold fire command. It's not very context sensitive.
