Some noob questions about unit control

I know if I build a group I can change the characteristics of say a rifleman to an APC and have control of it in my group.

Question I have is if I simply drop an APC unit onto the map can I control it ie direct it where I want it to go and what to do when it gets there after I've loaded my squad into it. Or can I?

Also , is there a way of assigning units to a specific slot (ie rifleman in F2 , APC in F3)?

Sure, just enter group mode and drag from the APC to your player to add it to your group.

To ensure the order within the group though? I think it's by rank then by the order in which it was placed on the map maybe? Never really bothered with the order so not sure. :)

You can control the "slots" in your squad:

If you have a squad of 8 men and want to add an APC to Slot 2 for example you need to remove all men from your squad and reassign them, starting with the APC and then the rest of the men in whatever order you want them. The rank doesn't play any role here, atleast until you (or the squadleader) dies.

To remove a unit from your squad, press F2 and with the left mousekey pressed draw a line from the unit into some empty space and release the key.
