Fiya 10 Posted August 5, 2009 Thanks,So what solution do you suggest? Either backing up the file(s). Then turning off the 'read only' function for them. Let Arma 2 overwrite them, when you change the settings ingame. After you have everything the way you wanted it, check your backup for any changes or tweaks you would want to add in if needed. Re-apply the 'read only' afteward to keep the tweaks. Or deleting the files (Config and/or profile) then letting Arma create them again and change them when you change the in-game settings. For better performance... Just try different optimization things. Different people get very different results from different things. Different tweaks, drivers, etc. may help or hurt your performance. Find the best setup for you. For me, stutter seems to be mission reliant. (Not very noticeable either) Currently the group of episodic missions that I am creating doesn't seem to cause any stutter, and they vary greatly. Maybe others know exactly what is causing the stutter and have a more direct fix or fixes.
Bulldogs 10 Posted August 5, 2009 (edited) What it sounds like is that the world isn't buffering fast enough. Like you mentioned with the grid idea, it's like the world is broken up into grid boxes, and the engine renders the boxes around you, once you hit the edge of one of those boxes it guesses where you will go next and begins loading that area. Problem being that this loading is meant to be smooth but instead it's giving you lag/studder. I've seen a similar thing in other open world games, and it usually shows a bottleneck at the bus between your CPU and Ram or Hard drive. Try updating all your motherboard drivers and set your page file to 1.5 times the size of your ram for initial size and 3 times the size of your ram for maximum size. Another thing that can effect it is RAM speed. If you're running slower speed RAM and overclocking it to push through more information it could cause a bottle neck. If you have your CPU overclocked you could try lowering it to your CPU's stock speed and see if that helps. ---------- Post added at 11:43 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:36 AM ---------- Add : Just had a quick search around and it looks like some people are getting the same thing with Warhammer Online. As I thought, many fixed it by putting in faster RAM or by lowering their overclock, but not all managed to fix it. others fixed it by defragging. laggy 0 Posted August 5, 2009 (edited) Thanks Bulldogs, Solid info :459: Really appreciate it. My specs: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 (3.00 GHz) 3 GB RAM 8800GTX 768MB Haven't OC'd anything. Trying a new defragger today (defraggler always stopped at 65% completed). Will see what happens... Laggy Edited August 5, 2009 by laggy
laggy 0 Posted August 5, 2009 (edited) Oh man, here we go again... So: Downloaded SmartDefrag, ran it in defrag AND optimizing mode. Took several hours. Downloaded and ran Advanced System Care, which found and removed many problems. Downloaded and ran GameBooster, which shuts down unnecessary background processes and flushes/cleans RAM. I started ArmAII... YES ! It runs great again, no stutter what so ever. I shut down ArmAII. I restarted ArmAII with high expectations... STUTTER HELL AGAIN !!! I am stomped. Setting the swap files from 4500-9000 MB (based on my 3GB RAM) didn't help either. In my user folder I see a config file and a ArmA2profile file. The config is opened by notepad, but the profile is not recognized as notepad. How can I open my ArmA2profile file? How can I save my changes and configs after the game has been running great? Can you make it last, so that it applies for the next restart as well? Is there a solution at all ? I'm starting to doubt it myself. Could be the security update. Turning off physx is a workaround (basically prevents it from accessing certain areas of the system that may be causing problems)I've noticed a lot of people saying that turning off physx doesn't help them. There's a good chance that a security update modified it to prevent the game from accessing the system a different way and as such it now runs through the same area that it would with physx on. The best theory I've read so far. Is there a way to force the old (good) route, that was used before the Vista update? Without a system recall? Many sincere thanks, Laggy Edited August 5, 2009 by laggy

It may not recognize them, but that doesn't mean it can't open them. (It or any other wordpad type program should be able to, even if it doesn't recognize it. Just manually select it if the 'Select the appropriate program" window comes up.) What you should do is right click the files, go to properties, then make sure the "Read only" box is not marked. If it is, unmark it. Then apply. Then start up the game and start putting your ingame settings as you would like them. (This will make Arma overwrite those files with the shiny new settings you are picking now.) Once your all done with the settings, and perhaps mapping/remapping any buttons, exit Arma once your done playing. Open those files and if you had any tweaks you had used on them, you may want to check if they are still in there and correct. (Things like your Vram, scene complexity, or anything else you may have/want to change manually.) Make sure you save! After this, (And assuring that you don't need to make anymore changes) go back to the files' property menu, and now make sure that the "Read Only" box is checked, then apply. This file is where Arma gets your settings every time it starts up. Any 'tweaks' that the engine doesn't necessarily think are natural, it may overwrite. (Things that you have changed in the files.) That is why you use the "Read only" thing. So that it cannot change them. This is also why, if you have marked the file(s) as "Read Only", it will not be able to change your settings permanently. I'm using the same programs you are, if it makes you feel any better. :) Edited August 5, 2009 by Fiya

Herbal Influence 10 Posted October 17, 2009 (edited) I find it odd when people talk crap about Microsoft. I installed Ubuntu on a machine the other day and put windows right back on because it simply is NOT user friendly whatsoever. That's so wrong. I installed Ubuntu Linux recently (in Sept 09) on three PCs, each within 17 minutes including (!) the complete OpenOffice-package. We use Linux since more than 6 years on our enterprise desktops and on private desktop: no problems at all, whereas Windows98 stole us some days not at last with it's famous bluescreens. I appreciate WindowsXP finally learned a lot from Linux, like the IE learned the tabs-browsing from the firefox (though Microsoft said before: that's rubbish!). Some of my family members, old mother and small kids, who are - not at all ! - technic enthusiats work since years with great success with Ubuntu Linux. No problems at all and very recommendable especially for persons without technical background. I do use Microsoft only for playing BI games - and I would pay a 200 Euro for a Linux version of BI games in the future to get rid off proprietary Microsoft sh...
