Headtorches and handheld torches in ARMA2?

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if headtorches are used in the army but it would be a really cool feature to have for civilians and rebel forces who can't afford nightvision :D

There has also been discussion about being able to attach torches to weapons or having handheld torches for unarmed units etc.

What are everyone else's views on this idea?

lol nope.

steerable helicopter searchlights (controlled by observer/copilot) would also be pretty cool.

Yeah...... No. Light on the battle field emminating from you very bad. Basically makes you a white, green or red target in the night....

Do you take a torch when you go out on a stroll at night?

A Maglite would be great for civilians, insurgents etc... It's not always a hot zone, it's not always full blown war in Arma. You can also blind someone with it, go hunting, look for evidence, make a blair witch remake, you name it.

And if some dumbass keeps using it while people shoot at him, well... his loss.

The military does use lights in real combat... They're just used in certain circumstances. Lights with red filters also don't travel very far and can be used to illuminate a small work area when using the batteries in your NODs isn't really efficient.

Also, as someone noted, they can be used to blind and "dazzle" people... These would generally be more along the lines of the high-lumen "Tac Lights" that are weapon mounted. Look at most pictures of modern day Special Forces Operators, there's almost invaribly a weaponlight mounted on their weapon. If they could model the "blinding" factor, and give you a momentary switch to turn it on only when you press that button, they would be very useful at night.

Go out in the middle of the night, have someone stand about 50 feet from you holding a 90-lumen Tac Light, when your eyes are good and adjusted to the dark have them flip the light on... It will temporarily blind you, and disorient you.

Lights are good if used correctly, that's where the term light discipline comes from. You don't wander around with a flashlight finding your way, you use it in limited situations where it provides you an advantage.

And I think people using it to find their way around in the dark and sticking out like a sore thumb would add to the depth of immersion, because people that don't know how to use them will use them incorrectly and that's as much of a liability in game as it is in real life.

yeah a flashlight may be good, I like the idea...But it would be crazy for the lets say independant guys to have flashlights compared to nightvision...I like the idea, sure, but it has its ups and downs.

Doesent that big brick M4s have on the side contain a light and l4z0r?!

The AN/PEQ-2? That's an IR illuminator and IR laser, it's designed to facilitate aiming while wearing NODs as it's really hard to aim when your "eye" is shifted towards the middle of your face as it is when wearing PVS-7 style NODs (1 tube sticking out the front going back into two eyecups). It also is kind of a "flashlight" but it is in the IR spectrum so you can only see the light it puts off if you're wearing NODs.

The laser beam from a PEQ unit looks really cool through NODs too, looks like a solid green line pointing at stuff.
