dpolwarth 10 Posted July 1, 2009 Hi, I have a dual-boot system and would like to install Arma II on the fastest operating system. I have Vista 64, and windows XP. I have 6 gigs of RAM which XP cannot access, but Vista is generally considered slower for gaming. Which would you recommend I install it to? Thanks, Daniel
Bulldogs 10 Posted July 1, 2009 XP is probably your best bet. At this stage of release I can't say for sure but Arma 2 currently has a few issues addressing large amounts of RAM and it doesn't seem to like 64 bit much either so the safe bet is XP.
FraG_AU 10 Posted July 1, 2009 Yeah I would try XP. It seems the game can only use up to 2047Mb, Xp would be fine and the engine was designed around this 32bit OS (LOl well prob win 98!)... But then again the game seems to be inconsistent accross various platforms so just do it on both and see which runs better.. PS> 6Gb Ram is prob i7? What GPU? dpolwarth 10 Posted July 2, 2009 Thanks - its very choppy in Vista64, so I guess I'll reinstall in XP. Thanks for the tip!

PS> 6Gb Ram is prob i7? What GPU? I've noticed something else in Win 7 that is a cause of much of the stuttering that I have never seen in XP. The processor use spikes, going from ~50% to ~100% for a few seconds and downing the FPS in the process. I haven't tested this in Vista yet but as my overall experiences with A2 under Vista are the same as Win 7, I'm guessing it'll be the same thing. This never happens in XP, the processor usage sticks ~50%. Given the problems this game seems to have with HT under Win7/Vista, this may be a problem with the way A2 is communicating with the processor. I'd like to know if anyone else is experiencing this. If you'd care to replicate it, I'll list the steps below. Make sure FRAPS is on and if you have a Logitech G series keyboard (or something similar) set it to the "Logitech Performance Monitor" (not necessary but helpful for seeing the spikes). Now, load up the campaign mission "Harvest Red" (start a fresh one, don't use a save). Go down the stairs and past the fence, turning left to go towards the city. As you move forward you should start to see the FPS getting cut in half every 5-10 seconds, this will correspond with a spike in CPU activity. As I said, it never happens in XP but I can replicate it perfectly every time in Win 7. I'm off to see if I get the same thing in Vista. Cheers, Eth
randir14 10 Posted July 2, 2009 (edited) Those of you using Vista 64...have you optimized your OS for gaming? Look at some tweak guides, I use Vista Ultimate 64 and usually get around 50 fps, a little lower in towns. I only have a 3.2 ghz AMD dual core, 4 gigs ram and a 4850 512 mb. I do get the multiplayer problem everyone talks about though, with the lower FPS for no reason. Edited July 2, 2009 by randir14
