A newbie guide to Arma2

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

Just started playing the Arma2 Demo.

To new players, like myself, it can seem a bit confusing - with all the possibilities and all, even though I finished the bootcamp. So I was wondering if any of you have a "Newbies guide" (or something like that) to Arma2? I've googled and googled but can't seem to find anything.

More specificly:

My friend and I are playing co-op in the demo - we found out, that we could buy units and issue orders to them, that they would then execute. But is it possible to squad up with your teammate like this, instead of with the bots?

And a little bonus question: how do you spot the enemies, so that they appear on the map?

I hope I didn't break any rules on the forum, I'm kinda new to the forum aswell.

Thx in advance

Can't really answer the Warfare-related questions (ie. base building/unit buying) but as for enemy units on the map, they only appear when you or someone else on your side has spotted them. Usually if your character, or someone in your squad spots them, they automatically yell out the relevant details, but sometimes you have to manually do this by right clicking while your crosshair is on the enemy. Of course, by this point, it's usually easier to left click and kill them :p

Press F - select weapon mode - till you see grenades listed, then click left mouse button.

Hi Giiraph

Stickied in this section of the forum is this post

That is the bible for playing ArmA II: Read, digest, employ.

I am afraid that every other FPS you ever played trained you wrong. There is no getting away from this, it is just a fact. And you are going to die, you are going to die a lot.

This game will not stroke your ego. It will instead kick your teeth in and then dispassionately execute you time after time after time BUT you will learn.

You will learn to crawl, you will find every patch of minuscule cover the good earth can give you.

You will skulk and sneak and yes crap your pants but, you will learn and one day you find your self with some buddies hunting down one of those T90s that have made your like a misery. You will hunt it and you will kill it. And it will feel good. :yay: BUT mostly you will crawl.

There is a list of ArmA MP mission types in this thread, it is by no means complete:

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?t=75001

there will be one that matches the game form you like, but try to be open and try out some of the other game modes, ArmA has a habit or rolling over peoples preconceptions and you may be pleasently surprised.

I would suggest you join one of the many clans. ArmA II is an excellent MP game there are already many servers and new ones starting every day. Have a look here to find one that suits you but wonder around a bit just to get the lay of the land:

http://forums.bistudio.com/forumdisplay.php?f=90

The top stickied thread has directory of clans, but read the threads that each clan you are interested in has started and follow the link to the clans website to get extra info.

And a little bonus question: how do you spot the enemies, so that they appear on the map?

Usually they have to be seen or heard to be reported. If you point in their direction and click the Right mouse button, that some times helps.

Be aware that; that facility and things like cross-hairs and third person view will probably not be available on veteran servers.

Please be aware that many of the people you will be playing with are serving or former military, act accordingly.

Kind Regards walker

Hi guys.

Thank you very much for the help. It looks like I've found a new book to read before I go to bed: the tactics guide.

@Walker: Yeah, I guess battlefield 2 trained me wrong, 'cause my kill/death ratio is way below 1.

Again guys, thank you for the help.
