some newbie questions

hi,

1 - i cant seem to get voip to work. do i have to change to a specific channel and if so what are the channels?

2 - how does evolution blue work? when i logged in i selected one of the missions and them some gear. i had various options like to recruit but i seemed unable to do so. there were a few guys hangin around, are these guys on the same mission as me or what. or am i meant just to head out myself?

3 - about mods. ive never known a game to have so many mods as this one. it also seems a lot more harder to mod the game what with all the various file to install etc and shortcuts to amend. what the easiest way to mod the game?

evem better, are there any mod packs with most the mods in one installatin file? i know that in bf2 there are mod packs such as project reality that have their own installation. anything similar in this game?

#2 You basically do what you want. To be able to recruit soldiers and pilot certain vehicles you need to gain rank by killing stuff and blowing things up.

#3 Use Kegety's Arma Launcher. Makes launching mods REALLY easy!

Installing a mod is basically making a folder in your main ArmA folder called "@(insert mod name)". You make a folder inside that one called "Addons", then put ALL the mod files inside that. Then you just quickly add the mod to the modlist in the launcher and you can launch it quickly like that.

The channels are Everyone, Your side only, Your squad only, Your vehicle only, and Direct. Everyone is self explanatory except direct which projects your voice into the game world through the sound engine, so it's like shouting.

If you're having problems getting it to work, you may have to open ports for it if you are behind a firewall.

Very briefly, you start off as a lone private in the combat role you chose, and earn points by doing various things. It depends from role to role what you get points for, but all classes get points for killing opfor, completing objectives, doing side missions, etc. As you climb in points, you will climb in ranks which will open up more weapon, vehicle, and AI squaddie possibilities.

Drop the mod in some folder under your ArmA directory. Make sure all of the unit / weapon / sound / whatever PBOs are in a sub directory called Addons.

So...

ArmA\@pwnz0rmod\Addons

Then create a shortcut with the following in the target line.

"...Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\ArmA.exe" -mod=@pwnz0rmod

The specific directory where ArmA.exe is may vary.

Multiple mods should be put in in the form of

"...Bohemia Interactive\ArmA\ArmA.exe" -mod=@pwnz0rmod;MaxPowerHestheManMod

To load both @pwnz0rmod and MaxPowerHestheManMod.

There are addon packs and such but only you know what you want to play with.

Also, watch for Addon / mod conflicts. Mods and Addons may conflict by altering the same aspects of the game or by one modifying something that another mod relies upon. In these cases, the one that shows up last in the shortcut is loaded over top of the ones that preceeded it.

You might want to get your hands on the unranked (also called unlocked) version of Evolution Blue so that you spawn as a Colonel and can do whatever you want. You're not going to have much success as a Private if you're playing alone.

Yeah, you're probably going to get tired of that in a real short time - because of the difficulty of playing alone.

I play Evo Blue Unranked alone but I recruit 9 AI soldiers (I modded it from the default number of recruits - 6?) and I still suffer a lot of carnage but it can be a lot of fun.

As everyone always has trouble tracking down this version, you can PM me if you'd like me to send it to you. I've made several changes to it to make it a little easier for one or two guys to play with AI backup...and a fix to winch the MHQ.
