Expected performance, any1 similar rig?

Recommended Posts

Hi there, my rig specs are as follows:

pentium 4 D 3GHZ

4GB ram

radeon 4870HD

I'm running on windows seven 7100 build. Anyways, played the boot camp no problems. On playing the full campaign i have really stuttery problems when turning. It's really annoying. I know my processor needs updating but i can play empire total war on mid to high. The strange thing is that even on realy low settings, visually the game is reduced which is fair enough however i still have the same problems. Anyone got any suggestions? Anyone playing with a similar rig and play ok? Thanks for any help in advance, regards,

Adam

... you didnt say the real spec... your display res, i find one 4870 to be ok at 1024.768 with 150%~ fill rate and high settings, any higher res i have to adjust the settings...

Sadly this doesn't seem to change things for me :( i'll try and start a new game to see what happens, as it is suggested when you patch the game. Fingers crossed although i don't think it will make much difference. Is this my computer or the game do you think?

Pentium 4? Seriously you wanna ditch that cpu asap. Pentium 4's architecture is absolutely appalling compared to the next step up, which is a Core 2 Duo.

You could easy pick up a decent C2D, & 775 motherboard for next to nothing on ebay. Would make a HUGE difference combined with your 4870. Especially since Arma 2 is extremely cpu dependent.

aaah ok, thanks. I realise that my processor is old but i have just been soldiering on really haha suppose i'm going to have to face the obvious and get new CPU. I was thinking of core 2. I think my motherboard can support it. It's 775. My motherboard is:

Foxconn 945 7MA Series

How would i check what processors are compatible? thanks for the help so far guys :)

hi, thanks for checking that out. Oh dear looks like i'll need a new mobo as well then. I can feel the cost adding up already! I think i might check out the scan website see what i can find on there.

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Gigabyte-GA-EP43-DS3L-iP43-Express-S-775-PCI-E-20-(x16)-DDR2-1600-1200-1066-800-SATA-II-ATX

something like that maybe.

Have you checked prices for a i7 system? Might be too expensive though to buy mobo/processor/memory. The C2D is still good enough but if the prices for a i7 system has droped (are about to drop) it will be more "future proof" i belive, it all comes down to how much of that hard earned cash one is willing to burn on a computer :)

Get a Ds3 from ebay like this :- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Gigabyte-945P-DS3-mATX-LGA-775-Motherboard-SND-LAN_W0QQitemZ180363608341QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Motherboards_CPUs?hash=item29fe824115&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1690%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50

Intel Core 2 Duo 6700 :- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&item=160344150686

Thats £95 pound in total for the cpu and motherboard. As long as you've got some ddr2 ram, you're good to go.

Should see a huge jump in performance for such a modest amount of cash.

See what other folks say though. Somone might suggest a better alternative for that amount of cash. Good luck anyway.

Hi thanks guys. Those suggestions are a good start will just have to do a good bit of research now me thinks. But to be honest i don't need to spend that much to improve on what i've got now haha thanks again guys! :)

To be honest those suggestions are not really needed!, the games runs quite well on my pentium D 930. It might run worse if you have a pentium d 8**, they perform a bit worse. I only have 3gb of RAM and use a gf9600, which is OC-ed.

Anyway, I can play the game on (all) high settings at 1280 * 1024, view distance 1800, with a fillrate of 100% with only the occasional hiccup.

I advice you clean up your machine (do defrags, get some free diskspace, etc, etc.) before considering upgrading.

hmm ok that's interesting. The thing is with the whole clean your system approach is the sad fact that i only installed windows 7 the other week! :(

Are you running any background tasks, how much memory do they eat up? Look at those kind of things. For example what virusscanner are you running? Try disabling it and run the game again, does that make a difference?

Ow and btw, I run it on winXP. I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

I'm running avg will disable that while playing see what difference it makes. I think i'm just going to go for a cheapish mobo that can support an ok cpu. when i got the new graphics card i knew i would need a cpu upgrade at some point had just been hoping it wouldn't have to be so soon! haha oh well was thinking maybe E8400...

---------- Post added at 05:52 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:46 PM ----------

ok guys thanks for all the friendly tips and advice. In the end I have decided to upgrade. Going for new mobo to support an e8200. Went for the slightly cheaper option than the e8400 cause basically the only difference is slightly slower and runs at higher temp. no skin off of my nose. yay just got to wait till monday now! haha thanks again guys
