Sound Bug makes game unplayable - who else has it ?

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

Can someone confirm this ? I have this problem so does one other mate who bought arma

Does anyone have any problems with the sound ?

Example: Single player mission 1

Fight into the first small village

Then a brdm approaches from the east ( right side)

The sound Iam getting for the brdm ( its like 200 meters away) is WILD

It sound like my head is inside the engine bay its that loud ( its sooo loud its distorting - clipping)

The sound is coming from right behind me not from were its supposed to.

Sometimes the leaders commands sound fine , other times side hes got a loud hailer set to 11 and his shouting right into your ear from 1cm away !

Anyone else getting this , voice commands / choppers / vech engine sounds are way too loud ?

Iam using my onboard ALC888 Realtek audio chip , using 5.1 speaker set-up ( that works fine in original arma + other games )

If I switch to stereo speaker config things work better , but I have lost the ability to pin point wheer weapons fire is coming from :-(

Anyone else got this , or is there a fix for this

There are a lot of issues with the Sound currently.

1.01 improved it a bit but 5.1 sound is screwed... i'm about to file a ticket in the Arma2 Bug-Tracker

Also yes the sound changes from "under power" to "Neutral gear" or "non giving throttle" are way to extreme in terms of quality, loudness and difference between all samples.

IS there an official bug tracker available ?

or has it died under the strain ?

I sometimes hear explosions and gunfire even when no one is about. Hard to know if I'm being attacked or not.

Also on the Manhattan mission I get this russian radio station talking over everything, it seems to loop and no way to shut it up. Totally ruins the mission. I did use the x4 time acceleration at one point to speed up a long journey, I suppose this could have screwed it up? Or just a big fat bug. It's still there if I quit a reload my save too.

Patch 1 has been applier btw.

Can you please try adding:

-dsound

to your ArmA2 shortcut.

This fixed most sound issues for me.(I'm still testing)

I have got an X-Fi Music and the same problem. Stereo works, but as soon as I set it to surround all sounds play at max. volume regardless of actual distance. As soon as it's hearable it's 100%

-dsound crashes the game after first load screen on Win7 64 here, will try with XP.

Ok, tested a bit and found following:

Using the -dsound parameter, my game starts fine.

I'm going into the editor and set 1 BluFor men, then click preview.

Game starts on Utes and all sound are crisp and coming from the right direction. Only problem is the permanently sound of flies all around. :eek:

Next test, again editor -> Utes.

But this time one BluFor helicopter -> preview.

---> Crash to desktop!

Wait, I can play the game with correct sounds, but only as men, not as mashine? :confused:

BIS, what are you doing to us? (again?)

Is WinXP SP3 and an Creative Soundblaster Audigy 4 such prehistoric/extraterrestrial hardware?

Please help us with this issue!

What about -dsound and -openal, do they still work?

What about the...

soundEnableEAX=1;

soundEnableHW=1;

...settings in my user config, do they still work?

Why are they not in the ingame sound options?

Is ArmA2 still using the OpenAL sound? I can't find an openal installer on my game dvd.

Anything we can do to get crisp and clean working 5.1 sound?

I tried my onboard soundcard too, same problem.

MfG Lee :confused:

I tried all permutations of

soundEnableEAX=1;

soundEnableHW=1;

makes no difference , soundEnableHW causes weirder sounds and pops etc

Did the devs forget to add the switch in the option menu or what?

My onboard SoundMax sometimes scratches too when a BMP is around... it's horrible if you play with life-like sound volume ^^

Some good news!

After some research and a lot of try and error, I have this:

- If you have WinXP click START -> run...

- Type dxdiag hit enter.

- Go to Sound and set the hardware sound acceleration to the second from left "minimum acceleration".

- Close dxdiag.

- Start arma2 without any sound releated shortcut parameter like -dsound or -openal.

-----

ArmA2_Amoksoundscheisse.jpg

-----

When I do that, I have NO working 5.1 surround sound, but the muffled sound and all the strange effects (LOUD flies/birds/rusty doors/etc) are gone!

The sound is very crisp and sharp!

Finally I can fly those great helicopters with good sound!

But remember, the dxdiag settings now may affect other games you play! Don't forget to switch back to full acceleration, befor starting other games. It's easy, cause you don't have to restart your PC to make it work.

I hope it helps!

MfG Lee :)

Good news indeed but unfortunately this cannot be done in Vista as DXdiag doesn't have that slider.

The sound (while much better than usual in BIS games) needs some work.

I'm also having trouble with 5.1. I _think_ the volume is ok for distance at least some of the time, but I'm damned if I can tell where things are. Seriously, I even put my 5.1 headset on backwards to see if left/right were switched over.

I have been told to ensure Windows is set to "headphones" and that this might help with stereo output. I haven't done it yet because I thought I was 5.1 rather than stereo.

Windows 7 RC1

Medusa 5.1 USB headphones

X-Fi Gaming PCI-E just for microphone

5.1 isnt doing anything good for me but I found a way to get a way better sound, stereo...

go to your control panel/sound and set your device in stereo mode

you have to restart arma2 if it was running.

It works great for me now.
