PicassoLSUS   0 Posted December 5, 2001 Hi!  I'm writing as a last resort, hoping to get an answer to a very frustrating gameplay problem I've been experiencing recently.  First let me detail my particular system so you'll know what I'm working with (and what may or may not be causing the problem): AMD Thunderbird 1.0ghz 320mb SDRAM (PC133) Abit KT7A with latest VIA chipset drivers installed 1 40gb 7200RPM/ULTRA133 Maxtor 1 20gb 7200RPM/ULTRA66 Western Digital Creative Audigy Soundcard (latest drivers installed) Xtacy GeForce3 200ti 64mb AGP (latest Detonator   drivers installed) Windows 2000 w/SP2 and latest Windows updates   applied DirectX8.1 installed Operation Flashpoint version 1.30 installed (please also note that the problem I'm about to mention has presented itself with both recent versions of all of my drivers and older versions) Here's my issue:  the game freezes randomly while I'm playing both single and multiplayer missions.  When the game freezes, the audio will continue to update with live in game sound for about 15 seconds while the video is frozen.  Then, in order to restore my system to normal, I am forced to reboot; neither ctrl-alt-dlt, alt-tab, escape, or any other key combo will work.  This problem occurs randomly during multiplayer games generally after about 10-15 minutes of gameplay (I considered the possibility of overheating, but my CPU runs at 115F and my video card is properly cooled with a card cooler, and is not overclocked in any way).  The only map/mission where I'm able to succesfully reproduce this problem time after time is on the Battlefields mission new to version 1.30.  I do experience the problem at random on other missions, but most frequently on Battlefields.  Here are some of the things I've tried as an attempt to fix the problem: 1.) Turned off 4x-AGP support in BIOS as recommended by The Avon Lady. 2.) Disabled any background services in Win2k along with antivirus software, CD creator software like DirectCD, turned off Roxio GoBack, disabled advanced power management, etc. 3.) Uninstalled and reinstalled Op Flash AND patched DIRECTLY to 1.30.  =( 4.) Tried miscellaneous driver version for both video and sound card (including the latest beta Detonator drivers 22.10 or whatever the version). So, as you can see I've racked my brain and tried as many different solutions as I could come up with to no avail.  If you can help me, please post here and send a copy to my e-mail at [email protected]   Thanks! Dawdler   0 Posted December 5, 2001 "This problem occurs randomly during multiplayer games generally after about 10-15" Well, at least you have a stable krasching system. Mine started locking up about 2 weeks ago (running perfectly for almost 2 years now). Mouse locks, keyboard locks, computer MAY still run (not always). But it happens TOTALLY random. Had it running 8 hours... restarted, krasched after 1 min (still in windows). Restarted, krasched after 10 min. Restarted, did not krasch for 2 hours of play, then I turned it of. Random? I say... NO overclocking or anything whatsoever. Original drivers that came with it. Doing ye olde FORMAT C: Works perfectly for 2 days (including OFP MP). Then it krasches 4 restarts in a row. Back to FORMAT C: Krasch during Windows (98) setup... Ehrm... Been working good since though, after installing VIA 4in1 in safe mode. Question is, for how long? Youre lucky. I am very curious how the win98 setup can crasch (exactly the same type of crasch as the other)... Ive checked the bios and nothing seems odd.
Rastavovich   0 Posted December 5, 2001 Dawdler, check your IRQs, maybe your IRQ 11 has to handle to many system-components. I had the same problem and it was caused by graphic-, sound- and ethernetcard on IRQ 11. I had to put the ethernetcard in another PCI-slot.
Dawdler   0 Posted December 5, 2001 That was the first thing I also though since I have had an IRQ problem before with another computer. Live! (yes, with a VIA, and no Im not crazy), Gforce and ethernet card are on seperate IRQs. 3, 7, and 11 to be exact. The only IRQ being shared is the USB controller with the ethernet card. And I have tried disabling it, without success. And btw, if it was an IRQ thing, how can Windows 98 crash in the install? If the bios IRQ settings where wrong, I think the cards would simply not work at all.
PicassoLSUS   0 Posted December 5, 2001 Dawdler, I ran into a problem setting a system up for someone once similar to your situation.  I was installing Win98 and the installation kept blue screening.  Turns out, I had the fan on the processor backwards (was a PIII)  =).  I know, stupid mistake but common if you're rushing through building a system.  Not saying that's the cause of your issue, but just thought I'd throw that in there. Mister Frag   0 Posted December 5, 2001 Things worth checking when you get seemingly random crashes, especially on systems that used to work fine: * CPU temperature * Power supply voltages * RAM The first two you can check using a tool such as Motherboard Monitor. The third is a bit tougher, if you had lots of RAM to begin with, you can simple take out one RAM module at a time; otherwise, you may have to find a buddy you can swap with for a while.
