Stuck on "Wait for host" screen

Recommended Posts

Every time i try to connect to a server regardless of the server ping or number of players i keep getting stuck on "Wait for host" screen.

While the consol printout says that i have connected. Ive been waiting to connect to a server for over 30 minutes once but i was still stuck on "Wait for host" screen.

I used to play just fine in 1.08 patch. I checked all of my Antivirus settings and my firewall is turned off. help.gif

I have a good internet connection and my ping was usually around 30 on US servers and 100 on all European.

Please help. help.gif

If you are alone on the server, tape this:

#userlist

Take your number on the server

#vote admin yournumber

#missions

And you can select a mission

I know, those commands are useless because i cant get in the server in the first place.

Those commands only work once you connected but the problem is that i cannot connect i am stuck on "Wait for host" screen after i hit "Join"

Look your "arma.rpt" file in "C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\ArmA\" and search for any reported error that can help you to define the problem.

There is nothing that i can recognize that would be a network/multiplayer error.

I went through the arma multiplayer troubleshooting guide.

http://community.bistudio.com/wiki...._Issues

did. netsh winsock reset, deleted the beta folder and the arma folder from local settings,

configured my router to accept UTP ports 2302-2305 and it still did not help.

Is there any soulution? Did anyone elese experianced this problem? help.gif I want to be able to play arma online agan sad_o.gif

Hi Bushmonkey

I am not experiening this but I accept that you are.

Run ArmA vanila (no addons) join a public server that is running signature checks and BattlEye; I presume you have installed it.

Most of the big public servers that are stable run this configuration some also run Doacs.

I know some have started listing it in there websites. You can find links to check here.

http://www.flashpoint1985.com/cgi-bin....SF;f=65

It would be nice if Mabes list was updated to include those that are running BattleEye and signature checking.

I tried that, i just got a fresh vanilla install and i tried it with and without battleye.

-------------------------------------------------------

One thing i found with my kaspersky network monitoring is that

arma.exe opens up svchost.exe with "-k netsvc" command line.

And while im connecting to server it downloads information at 2.4 kb/sec and sends information at around 300 bytes/sec.

After 5 minutes on connecting to server screen i have recieved around 500 kb of stuff. with that process. Would that be player data, custom sounds and faces?

And why is it so slow? I download at 700 kilobytes/sec i got cable.

Is there any way to make arma.exe in assosiation with  svchost.exe recieve more data faster at constant rate?

I have had this problem before.

Mine would sit at "wait for host" and once in a while it would actually join a server. It was about 2 out of 30 tries that it would actually join a server.

Worse yet.It required a reboot of my pc to get out of the "wait for host"

I also tried everything from reinstalling several times, removing all registry settings, mucking with all network settings, opening various ports, tried different network adapter even. I also have no firewall or virus software that runs so I know its not that.

I also have played Arma on 4 different PC's that I have and none of them ever did it.When this was happeneing I just used my laptop that didn't have the problem.

Since I reformatted and reinstalled it no longer does it and I still do not know what was causing it.

I think it was some piece of software I had installed before.

I am very good at PC's and I was stumped.Thankfully my new PC doesn't have the problem. Was my last PC that had the problem till I reformatted it.

Good luck and sorry I am not much help

I reinstalled 3 times now and it is still happening.

Sometimes i can joine servers that run "Signature check"

Still most of the time i wait on "Wait for host" screen and get error message - "Session lost" that only happens on servers that run addon key and signature checks.

I can get in those servers but it still takes me 10-20 tries to get in.

----------------------------------------------------------------

<span style='color:red'>Once i even got banned from a server because i was continiously trying to connect and it would lag people on the server out.

So they banned me around my 20th try.</span>

Hi Bushmonkey

Simple answer No.

You may want to look up Layered Service Provider

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Layered_Service_Provider

Follow the links to Microsoft.

Get your self the latest copy of HijackThis

http://www.download.com/Trend-M....53.html

And post up your results as code in the forum editor.

Ok i have preformed full disc scan with "legal" copy of KIS 7.0 with the latest update, updated August 1st 2008.

After about 6 hour scan it detected 4 viruses, 3 of them were trojans one was somekind of other one it was called "Connections.co"

After i deleted that virus and rebooted my machine, i could now join allmost every server regardless of how many people were on it.

Just joined a berzerk server with 50 ppl on it no problem.  biggrin_o.gif

I dont know for sure if the problem is fixed or not. Its weird because i could join Full Battlefield 2 servers or Red Orchestra servers with that virus on my PC but not ArmA servers.

EDIT:

Problem still presists.

Anyways here is my log from HIjackthis scan.

Hi Bushmonkey

It sounded like you had a trojan hence my sugestion, but I try not to say such things untill I have proof.

You may have a few inactive leftovers (old links) from them though as well as one suspicious link.

Go here and paste a copy of the above Hijackthis log into it.

http://www.hijackthis.de/

It will tell you about several old links you have in your startups. What you do then is up to you but back up before using the "Fix" function in Hijack this.

You will see there are several old links to removed Browser Helper Objects (BHO) that are no longer there as well as your old McAfee links and a Bittorent program you used to use. One of the BHO's may be where your nasty Trojan hid and just leftover from when Kasperky's removed it.

This bit is very suspicious!

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">O2 - BHO: (no name) - {29789614-1A4D-499C-BB2F-3252059B1EA0} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\wiavusdd.dll

I can find no record on the internet for such a file. (wiavusdd.dll) is one too many letters on a dll (wiavusd.dll) that I can find. Have Kasperky's look it over. If you do not know what this is; consider what to do.

As always backup before doing anything drastic

Kind Regards walker

Sometimes the trojans like to bury themselves deep in your computer so that when you think it's clean, it's not because when you reboot the virus will re-appear. Do you have any anti-virus and or spam software on your computer now?

If not try these, they work good and are free.

1. Advanced widows care v2 personal

2. Winaso

3. CCleaner

4. Spybot

5. Zonealarm

6. AVG antivirus

The first 4 are spam/registry cleaners. #5 is a firewall and the last is antivirus.

If you like goto trendmicro and they will do a free virus scan and clean for you.

If you don't have anything like I suggested above I recommend you get something ASAP.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bushmonkey

Glad to hear your system is working better.

On your point that some servers still take ages to download.

That can be caused by several factors:

1) Technical glitches server client or any where in the Internet chain between the two, it is amazing the Internet works at all, take a moment to think about all the things that can go wrong.

2) Viruses and trojans as you saw.

I hope you now have a working firewall. A hardware firewall with all ports stealthed is best. I pointed out Layered Service Provider earlier and that was how one of your trojans appeared to be working, it is a known exploit, though few understand its full implications.

Allowing lots of Active X controls and BHOs is never a good idea.

Be careful of free software look up reviews on multiple reputable sites. Only download from sites linked from the original source or ones you know for certain are trustworthy. Torrents and torrent software and the like should always be treated with care and scanned.

3) Badly set up server configs

4) Bad firewall configuration

5) Lost packets from dodgy routers if it is in you or your of servers control informing them can get it fixed but this is normally an ISP managers or admin's job. Approaching an ISP operator without observing the niceties can lead to a visit from the BOFH, not a myth they do exist, I have worked in the same room with some.

A traffic monitor system than can trace the path from you to a server and asses where the bottleneck is can be used for this but be aware these put a load on the system too so overusing them slows everyone down and certainly slows you down. Not really an amateur's tool and the better ones are expensive. There are a whole bunch of tools that a profesional can use to spot and track errors things like Hijackthis but most can cause more harm than good if used incorectly and all require better than average computer understanding to use. A course in networks help.

6) Some MP missions particularly continuous battles like warfare or Evolution can have been running for several days.

This means a lot of island data has changed and has to be synchronized (every knocked down tree bush, sign post, building and burnt out vehicle) as well as all player variables including all their AI squad, wounds, bullets, grenades, those just fired and moving in the simulation as well as those in their ammo every ammo drop all spawned buildings, vehicles etc. etc.

All that data has to be synchronized so that every player sees the same thing. Good bandwidth helps as does a fast server but I think you can see that as the game is played for longer so the data gets bigger and bigger.

The problem can be made worse by several factors:

1) lots of people who JIP in at the same time.

2) People who JIP in then get bored waiting (wasted downloads)

3) Or people who think the something is wrong and reconnect (Double or triple or Multiply as many times as you like downloads)

4) Lots of people in the JIP queue in front of you

5) A slow client in the JIP queue in front of you who is getting priority

There are several solutions:

1) When joining public servers look for ones playing short games.

2) Build up a list of servers you know are well maintained with a controlled and cleaned missions

3) Join a clan then you know when to join a mission and good admins can tell you when to JIP in to minimise server stress

4) Join admin-ed servers that have locked servers that have controlled entry.

Look out for well written missions that have clean up scripts like dead removal, unused vehicle removal and building/vegetation recycle, remind mission makers that they need clean up scripts. Some one should start a "Green ArmA Campaign"

Arma II could do with additional server info in the browser:

1) Number for clients waiting and you are x in the queue list.

2) A size of synchronization file is entry

3) Client side something that tells you the speed of download and how long it will take once you reach number 1 on the download list.

4) Server side a Client Priority Rating system based on who has best bandwidth, who has been waiting longest.

5) From the above improved load balancing between gaming and JIP clients

6) A tea break system! No I am not joking! we could do with an ability to freeze long games over an hour for say 10 minutes by admin request to allow the server to concentrate on synchronization and to allow people to go for tea/toilet break, rest there eyes, work the kinks out of their neck etc. In the old days of OFP when we had bad lag we used to tell everyone to look at the ground for ten minutes this let the server catch up.

In the long term the real solution is server farm technology. Then you can have a sub-server doing most of the grunt work of the synchronization before handing off to the main game server.

Also peer to peer synchronization may be solution.

Server farm technology would also allow unlimited numbers of players in world spanning streaming terrains as servers could each deal with a separate geographical or technical aspect of the simulation. This then leads to the Massively Multi-user Online Environment MMOE that ArmA will become.

Kind Regards walker
