bl00k 0 Posted May 6, 2008 Hi, it's been a long time since I've been to these forums. Everytime I come here I get flamed saying I need to search or something. I just have a simple question I would like a simple answer to. No flames, no lambasting, just be nice. Is ArmA 2 considered "Game 2"? From my understanding, Game 2 was the name given for BIS's sequel to OFP, but since they lost the OFP name they were just calling it Game 2. Then ArmA came along, but this was NOT Game 2, it was the follow up to OFP, but without the OFP name. So, to reiterate, I just want to know if Game 2 is considered to be ArmA 2 at this point? max power 21 Posted May 6, 2008 You bet! If OFP was 'game 1', ArmA would be 'game 1.5' and arma 2 would be 'game 2'.
Average Joe 0 Posted May 7, 2008 You bet! If OFP was 'game 1', ArmA would be 'game 1.5' and arma 2 would be 'game 2'. Which is essentially an enhanced engine from 1.5 with was derived from elite which would be 1.25? what a tangled web
max power 21 Posted May 7, 2008 No, Game 2's development was started before ArmA's. ArmA was derived from ofp elite but I don't think Game 2's was. Game 2 is apparently an entirely new engine, multicore optimized and everything. Some of the advancements made in the development of Game 2 made it back to ArmA, though. So if it was a web, ArmA would be at the centre with everything pointing to it.
shinRaiden 0 Posted May 7, 2008 Trunk and branches. "Game2" is the name for the development tree. As engine components become stable and applicable to the content development process and timeline, they get switched on in the branches. OFP was the first tree. Game2 is the second tree. Elite was fairly early in the G2 tree, and for a variety of obvious reasons had to be fairly stripped down, to handle legacy content development and fit in the constraints of the Xbox. Later, while G2 development continued, enough was ready that an interim product could be launched, Armed Assault. The evolution of that product such as it was, is now the product branding of BIS games. Elite, ArmA, VBS2, Arma2, VBS2 VTK, all branch from the Game2 base at different points. As new technologies are available and applicable, they get introduced into G2. As they mature, and have the tools infrastructure to be useful in a timely manner to a retail product, then they get added to the current products. "GameX" would be like id's "tech x", while ArmA, elite, and the others would be the release products.
