I use Taksi, a free alternative to Fraps, and VideoDub but I don't do much editing or fancy effects...

I've tried Taksi, Gamecam and FRAPS. Fraps is by far the best. Unless there is another program I don't know of, FRAPS is the best option.

If you don't want to buy something outright, you can always look around at TV-Tuner cards for a cheap card that comes with video editing software. Sometimes you can get decent software worth alot more than the tuner card in the package.

Sony Vegas is great for new people, i tought myself with that really...

Then looked at some advanced tutorials, its well easy...

Try the free trial they have...

However Adobe Premiere is better and the results in rendering are alot better, but for me adobe crashes many times.. Thus i'm not so fluent in the app either...

For Recording, grab the latest version of fraps smile_o.gif

I've had adobe premiere for 6 years... and I've still never been able to render a video under 10GBs... A 20 second video is still 1+GB.. and I've played with all sorts of encoding options... PM me if you wouldn't mind going in-depth with me in how to encode a decent quality video at a good size/quality ratio..

Otherwise... I use Vegas, but after years of that program I am bored of it. It's complex and whatnot for beginner/intermediate users... and 100x more versatility than WMM2. but I'm one of those hardcore mega users that demands versatility/complexity.

Fraps IMO is the best their is. I've never used Virdub, I don't even know what that is or how it works.
