ordering subordinates to move to a map point?

I've done the training, I've searched the forum, but I can't get a straight answer to 2 questions:

1. How to I order subordinates to move to a specific point on the map (not necessarily in my line of sight, possibly a long way away?). i.e. without using the move-to icon to point and click.

2. Possibly related - if I double click on the map I can create a named point. What are these used for other than just a reference for yourself? Can they be shared or used as movement/fire targets?

1. Select units then open up the map and click where you want them to go.

2. It's also a good way to point things out and plan with your team mates in multiplayer.

I have an question related to those waypoint map-icons for

teammates.

In OFP, you had some nice, crosshair like icon to pinpoint the

location to go to *exactly* (i.e. one bush of an bunch of)

In ArmA, there is this FAT, imho ugly and *annoying* black

square, which makes precise placement of troops impossible.

Whats more, if you create, say an ambush (bushes..house corner locations?)

you got those multiple FAT, ugly squares overlapping each other.

(Is this really ingame, or could it be gfx-driver related? Well,

3 different drivers now since release, so I guess, its not that)

I really thinks, its a mess. Why was this perfectly suited

crosshair icon from OFP changed to the worse?

I'm astonished to not have read something yet, to point this out.

Of course, I could have missed it. If there is an existing thread,

please guide me, thanks. Whats more;..*please* change it

back to the fine crosshair!

If this is not wanted for;..please give me some instructions to do it myself. I cant stand those, really.

If you see a black square then something is wrong. Try different graphics drivers.

Remember that you can use the arrow keys when placing markers to change the type and colour.

Wether or not those markers are visible to other players depend on the chat channel you are in when placing the marker.

You are in global channel -> every player can see the marker

side cahnnel -> every player on your side

and so on

I get this black square when ordering movement via the map screen. If it can be fixed I'm all ears but I don't consider it a problem since the black square shows up AFTER you give the move order.

I get that black square too after ordering a move on map screen.

It could be a graphics bug caused by certain graphics cards and drivers.

I have a Ati x700 mobile, official drivers (am too lazy to look up the version now).

Does this mean, you get something different than this black square?

If so, please post an screenshot, what you have got;

Do you have the OFP-style crosshair or something entirely

different?

And Maddmatt;.. I do *not* refer to the 'marker', you can

place on map (doubleclick) and give an name for/change color.

(I am sorry for the unfortunate wording in my first post;..

I have changed the word 'marker' for 'icon' which is more correct.)

And as I wrote;..since ArmA release, meanwhile I changed

drivers 3 times and cycled through every settings there are.

So I dont think, its the driver (can an Ati card user please

confirm/deny FAT black square on *movement icon* for troops

placed on map? Thank you.)

Icon looks like this for me :

It is a bit large, but i don't think is too bad, but it remains a constant size as the map scales meaning it can cover the entire town at minimum zoom. Giving <1m precision troop placements from a map is not very realistic anyway!

Raedon 9600xt, 5.7 or 5.8 drivers.

I originally thought you meant the map markers that you place on the map

I just did a quick test in ArmA. I gave some soldiers a move order on the map and got the same black square you are talking about huh.gif .

I don't know if it's suppose to be like that or not, but I think it should go in the bug tracker.

I do not think, it is an bug. Its an design change vs OFP, but

I must say, when I first have seen this black square, I

immediately felt negative about it. When I play SP

with AI teammates, I make use of the 'move there' function

for single soldiers a lot. You know;..going into (shooting)position

yourself, while keeping your back and flanks covered by

'sensible' placement of your AI. Just something important for

me and my playing style. smile_o.gif

Keeping everyone close in about any formation you got,

its almost an surefire way to lose a lot of men due to one

enemy teamleader firing an wellplaced grenade amongst you.

I really like to spread out, if situation permits.

Tool of choice is of course the map placement icon, because you

just cannot spin around all the time (and have aiming difficulties)

and have your men placed around you. If setting up yourself

in some bush(es) i.e. you wanna place your guys around you in spots,

which are not in your *own* direct line of sight.

So, OFPs crosshair was way more precise and me, for one,

want it back/changed badly.

To really see, what is so annoying about that black square,

try to position(city) an full squad of 11 men (editor test) in

close vincinity of 10-30m around you...oh noes!

You will just see *nothing* left of your map because of

map-overlaying squares/AI-mate numbers! Its bad. imho.

Ohh;..by the way: I also did like the OFP style team member/enemy

map icons (little circle and facing line)

much better. Is this only nostalgia or are those 'older' icons of

more practical use? Those new icons just gobble it all up.

I dont want to whine. But if its not planned for change in the

game itself, may I simply rob on my knees(! ) for an mod maker,

who can implement the 'old' icons? You *got* your six-pack, man!

Just remembered, someone already implemented NATO symbols

or somesuch as mod, am I correct? If you read this; pretty please? Thank you!

I don't see why it would be done on purpose. It should be changed. Therefore it's a bug smile_o.gif
