Are you saying that it is taking four minutes for all of the names of the players who have joined your server to show up in the Role selection screen for the mission?

Your uplink speed may also not be enough to effectively host for eight players. If you have 128Kbit of uplink speed, you are likely getting about 90% of that due to protocol overhead and other factors. But even if you were getting the full theoretical speed, you'd have 128/8 = 16Kbit/sec per connected player -- that's less than even the slowest analog modems in common use today.

If you are using a large map with custom sounds etc., it may take several minutes just to send it to all the players before the game can start.

The "Oilwar" map, for example, is 137KB in size, which would come out to 1.1MB of data to send with eight clients. At a throughput of 128Kbit (~12KB/second), it will take about 90 seconds to send the data, assuming perfect conditions for the transmission.

nm ppl downloading the map of me isnt the problem... what im saying is that this has happened since i got this new mobo and cpu the guy at the pc shop took my D-LINK ethernet card and replaced it with a built in ethernet on motherboard

this seems to be causing delays in ppls typing and they cant see there names in the pool for a while i was just ondering if anyone else had this problem with on board ethernet .....ill get my D-LINK ethernet card back confused.gif

Try going to DSLReports and run the Speed Test, then use the Tweak Test to optimize your network settings. Once you are done tweaking, run the Speed Test again to see what sort of an improvement you have realized.

Even though the site is called DSL Reports, the optimizations apply to all types of network connections, including cable modems.

these are my results.....

Your download speed : 485183 bps, or 485 kbps.

Browsers would show : about a 59.2 k/sec transfer rate.

Your upload speed : 70796 bps, or 70 kbps.

Im in UK though

Your upload speed looks low, roughly 50% of what it should be, although I remembered reading that the upload speed part of the test will be inaccurate because of NTL's hidden cache proxies....... But still it may be worth investigating your settings, seeing if there's any tweaks you can do, a great site for NTL cable modem users is http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips.html

Another site with lots of broadband hints/tips/tweaks is http://www.speedguide.net/Cable_modems/cable_patches.shtml
