sailindawg 0 Posted January 20, 2007 ARMA is a unique game. What I like about it are the very large maps that just roll on for what seems forever. When going on a flyer around the map, the map seems to just unroll seamlessly before you. No jerking or stuttering as textures, scenes change. The number one problem with the game is the exceptionally low frame rate the game engine renders at. FPS average ~25 or less depending upon where you are in the map. In open areas, with no foilage, one might see close to 40 fps. The game runs like it the fps are artificially capped. Most game .cfg's can be modified so that the game engine will modifiy at an increased framerate (or at least try). Is there a target line command or .cfg file command that can be added to get the game engine to render at a higher framerate?
JasonF 0 Posted January 20, 2007 I know OFP had a framerate setting in the options, but I don't see that in ArmA. Most of the time in cities or forests, I tend to get around 18-24 fps. I have gotten up to 60 (where I believe there is a cap) while climbing a tall tower and looking strait up, so I would think that if your computer is capable of high fps it would do it. Try dropping shadow quality.
sailindawg 0 Posted January 20, 2007 Thanks Jason, I have played around with the settings a bit as you have suggested. Still, my fps are pretty much as you describe. It would be sweet if one could add a line to the .cfg file to really allow this game to run at higher frames. The game really streams smoothly, but if it could run at 30-50 fps in very texture rich areas, rather than 18-25, then this game would be barnstormer! I am not familiar with the first OFP, but that fps switch sounds interesting. It would be real sweet if the demo cold be patched with something like that to help out the fps. Maddmatt 1 Posted January 20, 2007 Turn Vsync off in your video card drivers. It limits your framerate from going above your refresh rate to prevent screen tearing.
max power 21 Posted January 20, 2007 Framerate isn't artificially capped... at least not in the demo. I've had some scenes render at over 70 fps. I would suggest enabling geometry instancing, and turning of vsync in your drivers; and fiddling with your video settings in game. Something that will grant you some extra frames would be to turn antialiasing off completely, and turning the shadows down.
