InFESTation 0 Posted December 31, 2006 Hello, Background:~ There are a few of us that used to play on a LAN quite regular (a mix of co-op play, CTP and DM), but due to work have all now been sent to the 4 corners so have decided with the upcoming release (UK) we would wait and start Internet gaming with ArmA. I have done plenty of searching but to be honest not any wiser, with what we need to do/get in place I seem to have been nobbled with trying to organise manage this. 1. Is it necessary to find a clan/game server site, we are wanting to control access to the matches etc (most of us have 2Mb/256kb lines so would local hosting cause bother for 8-10 players). 2. If we go that way there is generally 8 of us, when we get our game together and start to play other clans/teams do we need to be able to host all players on that server so needing 16-20 slots. 3. We have been trying the demo version and not managed to get the built in VoIP working (necessary now as on a LAN we just wispered or shouted our way through), so have had a look at teamspeak, some of the clan/game servers seem to include this in the packages, is the more reliable way to go. Thanks in advance, please feel free to PM if you think that it would be easier.
Kirby 2 Posted January 1, 2007 I think if one one of you has the best connection and PC, he could "local host" without having to rent a rip-off priced server... And you could borrow my clans teamspeak, we don't use it. Edit: If Intox has kept it up that is...
InFESTation 0 Posted January 2, 2007 Thanks Blazin, Looks like will break out the OpFlash and give that a try and see how that goes (we appear to be getting a touch impatient the demo has definitly wet the appetite). As for the teamspeak thanks for the offer, if you don't use the teamspeak can I ask what you use instead. (Edit : Spell)
Jack-UK 0 Posted January 2, 2007 For 8 players the one with the fastest machine should be able to run it quite lag free within the game without using a dedicated server. If anyone has a half decent spare PC you could also use that as a dedicated server for yourselves which should reduce ping and lag. If not, you can pay for the dedicated server from a hosting company. Though most hosters compensate for a lot of players instead of 8-16 players.. so you might be charged more than what you need. For voice comms, the most common programs used are Teamspeak and Ventrilo. I personally prefer Ventrilo as the codecs are much better, with much clearer voice communication. I've never set up a dedicated server myself im just basing this information off what i know from the clans i have been in and general knowledge around ArmA Hope it helps
