What OFP multiplayer REALLY needs?

Recommended Posts

I think the most important would be the ability to join games during the game. Playing OFP online is a pain because it takes half an hour to even get to play, only to find out the missions or the players on the server are a pain in the butt, then search n+15mins for another server, etc, ad nauseaum...

Well, this isn't a black/white issue. I agree there are valid arguments against this. But limited to respawn-enabled non-coop missions, mid-game joining would dramatically improve the online OFP experience.

Another enhancement would be server/mission specific parameters controlling the use of AI on the server. I think two params would suffice:

aiPlayers - controls wether or not AI players take up vacant slots, but naturally the good ol' Disable AI button would be available

aiReplacements - controls wether or not AI takes over soldiers whose players have disconnected

For maximum configurability, each mission's description.ext could set the params. Server's config could override the settings in it's mission segment, or override all other settings in it's general parameters.

Comments on these or additional ideas extremely welcome. smile.gif

JIP (Join in progress) is not going to be implemented into Opf, no matter how many threads people make asking for it, it just isn't going to happen, maybe it'll be in "Opf2-Dimitri's Revenge" who knows smile.gif

Why? Is it technically impossible or overwhelmingly difficult, or are the BIS guys simply sadistic, taking pleasure in seeing us suffer endless hours of waiting... waiting... getting repeatedly TKed by an immature n00b and quitting... waiting... joining a server running an incredibly stupid mission and quitting... waiting... waiting... sad.gif

Well they've answered this in here a couple of times in the past, I'm too busy to search for the actual answer but I believe IIRC it's kinda a combination of the two......

Opf in its current form isn't capable of JIP, re-writing the engine would take far too long and far too much time to implement JIP smile.gif

I believe that OFP's complex world is it's undoing.

Basically, the world starts off prisitine, with all buildings intact, and all vehicles at their predesignated spots. However, as the game goes on, and stuff starts getting wrecked, it becomes increasingly more difficult to keep track of the state of the world, or game-state. So if someone joined 15 minutes into a 25 person battle, there would be HUGE amounts of game-state data that the server would have to feed to the player FIRST before they could even join. (e.g. this M3 is this damaged here, this building is at this state of disrepair, this chopper is here going this velocity, etc). So just sync-ing the incoming player up to the already going game would be a nightmare. I'm sure that BIS (if they don't take that cushy goverment job wink.gif ) will come up with some clever hack, but right now there is an inherent limitation in the code. Sorry. No JIP, not now, not ever.

you know what ofp MP really really needs? well at least the russians need to have some sort of killer GA vehicle that shoots rockets instead of the useless crap that is the shilka. this unit shoudl only be on the eastern side and the defenses should be automated. why you might ask does the east deserve this vehicle? because the mp aspect of this game is so poorly planned that people playing east in mp end up being a nato choppers b!tch.

soo, either let the russian hinds carry more weaponry and the t80's more armor or let us have our missile launcher.

it's really too bad the developers didn't concentrate on the mp aspect of the game since it is what really gives it true life. any ai always gets boring eventually, humans are the ultimate ai. also makes you wonder who they had to pay off in order to get that military contract, after all i don't seriously expect a platoon of USMC huddling around one pc while the eltee plays to be considered "real war" practice, unless the boys start fighting over who's next.

This issue has been repeatedely debated all over every single OFP forum in the world. Bis has said that it is TECHNICALLY impossible (or very very very hard, ie complete rewrite of the code, the entire code, I mean, not just the net part) to implement JIP.

For more informations, I took randomly one of the threads on the subject in this forum (I remember having answered in wink.gif ):
