what i need for simple moding?

My question is what i need for a simple moding.

Like just retexture and add some more gear to soldiers?

For example:If i want to add some HYK gear on IRO EDF troops and change their weapons.

You need:

O2 and Bulldozer

A UnPBO and MakePBO tool

A GFX prog liek Photoshop or Gimp

loads of free time...

I have the tools.

I was told that if i want to add HYK gear to EDF soldier i just need to copy and paste something, but what i need to copy?

And like if i want to make it a standalone addon, not owerwriting anything original EDF stuff.

I am new to the modding world and wouldn't mind finding out more so I can create my own addons, one day. Could someone tell me what editing tools are and when they are released?
