What do you think is the best way to...

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm basically toying around with a few models based on a space show. The thing is, I'm not sure exactly how to simulate space. I know about the old space shuttle addon that was released, but I'm looking for something where you can move about in (not as infantry).

Any ideas on the best way to do this?

Just create a big box around the model with black/stars textures and faces faced to the inside.

That's one option. The models are a little on the large side, and I know that there's a limit to object sizes. Although maybe I can reduce the sizes of the model.

What would you class a large battlecruiser as? Helo, plane, or ship?

I don't think size should be a problem. There are a number of large objects included in data3d.pbo (water etc.).

I'd just class it as an object that floats in the air.

Hi,

sounds very interesting. Once I tried for a cutscene to use a "black box" and microscale models for a space scene. Main Problem is the scale:

if too small, effects like damage will be displaced and look strange, if too big you can't be sure that other people with lower settings in the option menue will see some kind of fog. This usually turn the black box in a more grey one. Problem is also the texture for the stars in the background. Texture quality must be very good to have sharp stars.

If you want to move a space ship I would suggest to make it of class house. This class should be moved by an invisible addon of class ship.

House has the advantage, that you can carry a lot of other addons on it with transport scripts like class plane for afterburner or class tank for guns if you want to make some star wars space battles.

So it would be very interesting to read more about your idea what you want to do in space...

Hi all, and thanks for the replies.

Shinkansen, your idea is a very interesting one. In particular, how do you get a ship class to move a house class? Scripting is definately NOT my strong point, so if you could guide me to some commands to play around with, I would like to give it a shot.

The reason I started this thread is because I wanted to expand my skills, and have fun while doing it. I am a decent modeller, and I wanted to practice my texturing skills.

I figured I should have fun while doing it, so I decided to try to make a few addons from Star Trek: The Original Series. This is my first model.

Again, if you wouldn't mind helping me figure out how to class them, I would appreciate it.

I was toying around with the idea of classing it as a ship, and then using Col. Klink's multiple gunner script to add the necessary firepower...but if you say that classing it as a house has its advantages, I'd love to hear more about it.

Thanks again.
