Lag

Recommended Posts

Hi, I may have posted something like this before, didn't find the post.

I'm still having problems with this. It's really hard for me to play bigger file missions on my computer. I have an over 4 year old PC..

I'm not familiar on what is needed to be done here to solve this annoying problem with OFP game play. here is my system information.

-Intel Pentium 4 Proccessor

-512MB RAM

-80GB Hard drive

-CD & DVD ROM Discs....

Those are the basics for it...I need to have guidence and direction here on what to do so I can apply the steps to fix this problem so I can play missions, where I'm not experiences horrible lag..

I know even really super fast computers and new ones might expirence lag but mine is with missions that aren't even very big and I know this is not normal and it's crossing the lines for my game play...

Any help would be great. Thanks all..

What are your ofp spec's? I toned mine way down, noticed very minimal looks but more FPS.

How much RAM do you have?

Shove the view distance down a bit (I tend to use around 800-1200m, put the view quality down a bit (no lower than 3/4 or it starts to look horrible, and you don't really get a change in frame rate).. Screen resloution seems to have no effect on frame rate (I tried running the Battlefeilds mission at 480xsomething screen resloution, and got nearly the same frame-rate as at 1204x786..)

The two biggest jumps in OFP speed I got was from, 1, getting a ATI Raedon 9550 (Basicly same as 9600) from a Geforce FX5600 (Not a huge jump, but the card was fecking cheap, and most games run far smoother, a better card would have been held back by the rest of my PC really..), and going from 512mb RAM to 1GB..

Theres no real set way to "make OFP less laggy", or "tweak frame rate" like in moredn games, as OFP was designed to be ridicously scalable (Look at the min system requirements, and look the game on a high-end computer now, even still you can't run it at maxed settings..)

It's largely down to the mission.. I think this FRAPs benchmark thing (From a CTI mission online) sums it up :

Frames: 30874 - Time: 765138ms - Avg: 40.350 - Min: 0 - Max: 77

{Edit : Computer specs/info : P4 2.8GHz, 1GB RAM, ATI Raedon 9550, 120GB 7500rpm primary drive, then two other harddrives, tend to play with MSN, uTorrent, Juice podcast downloader, DU Meter, Avast, Sygate Firewall.. Only "normal" program I tend to close is Firefox as it tends to use 100mb of ram sad_o.gif )

It keeps the visited pages in the memory, so if you keep it open and use if for a day or two constantly without ever closing it, it will indeed use a huge amount of memory. Close that **** site once in a while wink_o.gif

I "lost" 2fps on average when I switched from 800X600 to 1024X768, the difference is neglectable (and so, higher = better). Tweaking (setting it by hand) the lod settings in the configuration tool can also improve performance quite a lot. Also, make sure none of the texture sizes in that tool exceed 1024, OFP won't be using any texturefiles larger then that in 99% of all addons and islands.

Oh did I not specify this correctly?

512MB RAM?

Or if not then where do I find how much there is?.

@DBR_ONIX~

What about going to operation flashpoint references and changing some settings in there?

What is all you could possibly do to make lag atleast more livable in game-play?

Because when it comes to mine, it sometimes gets so bad I can't even play the mission to complete the objectives, that's how it gets.....

Anymore ideas, or maybe steps that people have taken who have had this exact same problem or something very close to it.

There was an optimization tutorial for OFP, but I believe it was on OFPEC, and since that is down I can't find it sad_o.gif

Doh... sorry didnt properly read.

Well my ofp settings are Very low terrain details becuase it doesnt really change much.

Also there is a page a while back on either General or in troubleshooting about Lag and theres a post osmeone made which was very usefull about different settings.

Maybe try a quick search for it could help, helped alot with me.

Almost all the time OFP is laggy it's down to CPU useage (by AI, tracking what bullets do, doing collision dection etc).. Stuff like that can't be scalled down.. Even shoving all the settings down wont affect that.. If you can go onto the desert island, and get a very high frame rate (Well, say, 60 or 70), any lag you'll get is almost always caused by CPU useage.. Since graphics are done by the graphics card, settings won't change that..

While this isn't totaly true (There will be times when the graphics slow stuff down, I find it happens often with lots of particles, but the sort of lag that seems to be the problem here will be caused by the CPU being screwed-over..), it's mostly the case, and thats almost certainly why I see no noticeable FPS improvement when I shove the settings down..

When Resistance was released, I've noticed that autodetect in the prereferences set geometry performance and object/shadow LOD higher for the same system specs which resulted in lag. Returning to the CWC values raised my FPS again.

All other advanced settings should at least have a minor effect.

And don't forget to check that your graphic card driver isn't set on maximum antialiasing or anisotropic filtering.

That's understandable about the graphics card and CPU. Although I don't know much in-depth detail about those parts of the PC I see how they interact and have a relationship with all the graphics and objects inside OFP game-play.

So, do you guys think I should get a new graphics card?

Because I haven't had a new one put in since I got the PC almost 5 years ago. Also don't know about getting a new CPU, because that's almost like buying a whole new computer, but I like my computer so I would probably do it.

But yeah when it comes down to day to day playing with OFP even sometimes the smaller missions I have even lag a little bit. I think people who know what I'm talking about find it quite difficult to finish a mission or even start one if the lag is bad.

If your mainly upgrading your graphics card mainly for OFP, don't, buy 1GB RAM smile_o.gif

Well, depends on what graphics card you have just now, but I'd recommend RAM first, then new graphics card
