M9ACE 0 Posted February 27, 2006 Interesting thread. Â A friend of mine had introduced me to the OFP demo in July 2001. Â At first, I thought it would be just another unfulfilling game. Â After watching my friend play for a while I realized that this is the game I have been wanting for years. Â On the day OFP was released in the USA, I picked up a copy for myself at a local Electronics Boutique store for $44.99 USD, and it was worth every cent. Â I still have the original box and receipt dated September 3, 2001. I pre-ordered the Red Hammer campaign and bought it when it became available (via Chips and Bits I believe). Â I also bought Resistance about two weeks after it had come out. Â I delayed buying it because it was not compatible with the original game and I had heard that it was a bit buggy multiplayer-wise at version 1.75. Â I only ever ended up playing the first three single player missions of Resistance since I had been hooked on the multiplayer aspects of OFP by this time. Â Fast-forward to today, I am still hooked on the multiplayer aspects of OFP. All other games including Battle Field 2 fall short of this game. Â Only BIS is capable of supplanting OFP with another game of the same caliber. Â Other, larger companies cannot compete because although they have greater resources, their structure is too top heavy with too many corporate types who do not really understand the market. Â They are afraid to take risks and invest what it takes to make a good game that is worth keeping on your hard drive for a few years.

I must preface my small rant with this: I am a realism freak. If it's realistic, I'll play it. I bought CWC as soon as it came out in the US, and played it like a maniac. I bought Red Hammer pretty late though, right before Res came out. I just wanted to play around with the mission editor and such. As soon as I got Res, I noticed the huge difference. Awesome stuff. As soon as CTI .96 came out on just Malden, I almost shat my pants. I'd never had so much fun in my life. The realism was incredible. Moving into an area and conquering. Augh... it made me so giddy that I'm still playing CTI now in 2006. My first online experience was a pain in the ass though, as I was constantly crashing to the desktop and whatnot. It could've been worse though. I could've tried to play on Direct Play and started a new game, having the boot sector erased on my harddrive :P Remember that? As for speed and whatnot? When I started with OFP, I had a 700mhz Celeron with 128mb of PC100 and a crap onboard graphics card (No idea what it was). Now, I've got an AMD 2600+ with 2gb of 3700 and an X850 Platinum. Things are good in the 50fps's.
CameronMcDonald 146 Posted March 2, 2006 I find that making Flashpoint as real as possible has all but taken my focus off every other game I own (I only finished Doom3 and Quake4 twice before getting bored of 'em). The hunt for the newest and best addons to add to my own mod and its campaign keeps my virtual life going. And when FFUR 2006 and that new M1A2 comes out - 'nuff said. I sincerely hope that the community doesn't shrivel and die when AA comes out, because mission makers like me have one hell of a time playing OFP and making use of the wonderful addons those crafty modellers create for us. <Wipes tear.> I spent $2000 on upgrading JUST so I could run OFP how it should be run - not a single damn regret - I love it.
