Brentk 1 Posted January 15, 2002 Its great when a host opens a game and isn't there until about 30 minutes later due to reasons unknown to me
Placebo 29 Posted January 15, 2002 My favourite is when you're finally all sat at the "I'm ready" screen and the host decides he needs a poo, so you all carry on sitting there, then you think "hmm I may as well roll a cigarette" so you do that, meanwhile the game starts and just as you reach for your lighter a grenade lands at your feet and scares the crap out of you
quibbly 0 Posted January 15, 2002 For those of you complaining about servers, why don't you host your own? I spend around $2000.00/month for the T3 and my server was around $2800.00. I'm doing this for the public so everyone can have a fun place to play. I run my own company, I do not have the time to admin the server 24/7. I have other admins, but they also have a job. If you really pay attention, it isn't the admins, it's the players. The idiots who can't figure out how to hit "Start", "Select", or "Ready. I can say my site has some cool admins and we are "Zero" tolerant on the people who can't figure out three simple buttons: start, select and ready. You have 5 seconds to make the proper selections..If you try to ruin the game for everyone by sitting around and doing nothing, we kick then ban. Getting back to the subject. If your unhappy with the public servers, feel free to host your own. If you would like to have fun, join up for some great CTF. Brentk 1 Posted January 16, 2002 we're (atleast im not) complaining about the admins, but rather the small games that players themselves host.

quibbly 0 Posted January 16, 2002 About the larger maps. I frequently host maps for around 20 players, but there are issues with larger maps. Larger maps can have desync issues. You will see helicopters in one location, then pop up in another. There are many reasons to cause this: number of players, connect of each player, players computers, number of vehicles on map, Connection of server, speed of server (to include drives, memory, processor). For this reason, a lot of servers do not host large maps. Another reason, some of the servers admins are not updating with newer maps. Some admins only prefer smaller maps for coop or FF. I host larger maps, but I also prefer smaller maps. This gives me a chance to know the regulars better. If you would like larger maps, come to my server. Be sure to ask them to loadup: Quibblys_runway_madness. This map has over 60 vehicles, with vehicle respawn. Hope you have a good computer and a fast connection!!!!!!! Remember, it's not if you win or lose, but rather, did you destroy the enemy!!!! Quibbly Quibbly's Game Domain, Pure T-3 quibbly@quibbly.com To join from game, go to multiplayer, select remote. KaRRiLLioN 0 Posted January 16, 2002 Yep larger maps can cause some issues. I've made quite a number of custom missions for all sizes. I have a mini-multiplayer campaign on my server as well for smaller groups of players who want to do some 6-8 player coop. My CTF missions go from really small islands up to much larger CTF over a bay. I haven't created anything that holds more than 24 people though. 20 players is a stretch itself because of desynch issues. Heck I've seen desynch issues occur with only 14 players before, which is kind of a pain. Another thing, if you're talking about people who host their games on the computers they play on as opposed to a dedicated server, you REALLY don't want a 20-player mission. I've tried hosting a 12 player on my home machine before and it was a slide-show for me. That's on an AthlonXP 1800+ with a GF3 Ti500 and 1.5GB ram. Dedicated servers handle this MUCH better. sergeant rock 3 Posted January 16, 2002 In response to caz's statement, I think the problem is twofold. Firstly, admins should be limiting their maxPlayers to prevent more people from signing on than their installed maps support. Secondly, they should be taking into account their bandwidth when setting this parameter. Don't be setting your maxPlayers parameter at 20 for example when you are hosting a server with a 256k upstream bandwidth. I host a dedicated server with only 256k up and limit the maxPlayers to 6....which is good for smaller co-op missions. Admins like Quibbly, AngryRadish, & FragHaus are not the problem here.....maybe some of the others just need a little education to temper their good intentions.
