HuNtA 0 Posted April 28, 2005 kk... whenever I run OFP, even if its a totally clean install, it will freeze for anywhere from 1 minute to indefinitely at some point (until I turn off my comp manually) Ive tried reinstalling to a different folder/different drive, used nomap, changed AGP apeture settings (even though its a PCI card ) The usual trend that I get is that I go ingame, and after a min or 2 it freezes, I press Alt tab and ctrl alt delete... and about a minute later it shows the ctrl alt delete screen thing. If I then go back into ofp, within a minute later it freezes again and 99% of the time I cant alt tab/ctrl alt delete out and I have to turn off my comp/turn it back on again my specs from dxdiag: System Manufacturer: Dell Computer Corporation System Model: Dimension 4600i BIOS: Phoenix ROM BIOS PLUS Version 1.10 A10 Processor: Intel® Pentium® 4 CPU 3.06GHz (2 CPUs) Memory: 1534MB RAM Page File: 308MB used, 2678MB available Card name: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 Manufacturer: NVIDIA Chip type: GeForce FX 5200 DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0322&SUBSYS_00000000&REV_A1 Display Memory: 128.0 MB Current Mode: 1152 x 864 (32 bit) (60Hz) Description: SoundMAX Digital Audio Default Sound Playback: Yes Default Voice Playback: Yes Hardware ID: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24D5&SUBSYS_01741028&REV_02 Manufacturer ID: 1 Product ID: 100 Type: WDM Driver Name: smwdm.sys Need anymore info.. just ask
DBR_ONIX 0 Posted April 28, 2005 ..When did it start freezing? Did you install anything around then, upgrade anything etc? - Ben
HuNtA 0 Posted April 28, 2005 no, not at all really... I did install CAT aghanistan (the newest version) but as soon as it started freezing, I uninstalled it
BraTTy 0 Posted April 28, 2005 Hmm that sure sounds like the Direct3d AGP Aperature lockup (do we have a name for it?) How low did you go with the AGP aperature settings?
hardrock 1 Posted April 28, 2005 Hmm that sure sounds like the Direct3d AGP Aperature lockup Do we know more about that? Could that be the reason why my OFP always freezes (+ windows error message a few seconds later) in CTIs? Gonna look up my Aperture Size . . . HuNtA 0 Posted April 29, 2005 can U kinda not hijack my troubleshooting thread this is really starting to annoy me... no OFP for a week EDIT: apeture: 32mb or something... but my graphics cards PCI anyway
hardrock 1 Posted April 29, 2005 can U kinda not hijack my troubleshooting thread 1. Topics are not planes, they can't be hijacked 2. This is a public forum. This thread is called "OFP freezes randomly" and as far as I see fits my post perfectly here. Furthermore did Bratty mention something which could solve a problem which I have for long time, so I asked him if he knows more about what he mentioned. So what's the matter? HuNtA 0 Posted April 29, 2005 daaarnit I need a hand... not to start getting annoying... but ive just finished an addon and wanna test it...
BraTTy 0 Posted April 30, 2005 Hmm that sure sounds like the Direct3d AGP Aperature lockup Do we know more about that? Could that be the reason why my OFP always freezes (+ windows error message a few seconds later) in CTIs? Direct3d bug been around since Unreal Tournament days.I've seen a many computers that had to lower AGP aperature to stop these direct3d lockups.I've had to go as low as 2 megs to stop the lockups before (todays computer with large amounts of ram won't even go to 2 meg) But that doesn't sound like your problem Hardrock.Normally it locks up upon first 3d draw or up to 30 secs even a minute after playing. And the screen would be frozen to its last viewed (altho you are using ATI and it may be the recovery saving you). @Hunta ...Have you tried different version video drivers? Often I've had to downgrade video drivers to fix things You say clean install of OFP.Have you removed registry entries during these reinstalls? Is that a fresh reformat of your system too? And has your OFP worked correctly before?
HuNtA 0 Posted April 30, 2005 aye, ofp's been working since 2001 till now and yeh, the registries were removed also.. where do I get older drivers? (jus remembered a upgraded a month ago)
mrlogik 0 Posted April 30, 2005 I have the same problem but ive cured it for now, symptoms were ramdom lockups that sometimes [rarely] would recover and keep playing smooth, but more often than not need a complete reboot. I tried all the usual agp apperture size efforts but to no cure, i switched to dx9b or c and new nvidia driver, just before this problem reared its head but im sure its not that im almost definite its the nvidia driver being incompatible in some way with dxdll. I never had probs before using the latest driver and if i turn off dxdll i get no probs at all. I may try reverting to the older nvidia driver this evening and will let you know what gives. card is a gf4 ti 4200.
HuNtA 0 Posted May 1, 2005 I just installed the older nvidia driver and SUCCESS! it works
