Thanks Denpends on the monitor used. LCD - ? CRT - the higher the better. Smoother display and won't kill your eyes. 85 is the pain level.
der bastler 0 Posted March 27, 2005 hi guys, can someone tell me whats better to have in game....low refresh rate like 60 or high like 85 ? whats better lower or higher? and why. CRT? High refresh rate! Because I'm sure you are usually staring several hours on the screen while gaming (e.g. a full-blown classic ET campaign can last three hours). Do this with a low refresh rate and you can say hello Mr headache... Edit: Just to add that LCDs always have a refresh rate of 60 Hz, but that's ok. They don't have to redraw the picture constantly like CRTs, only if something's changing. If you want to buy a new monitor, go for a TFT with digital in (DVI). They save money (electrical power usage) and present a much sharper picture if connected via DVI.
IceDude 0 Posted March 27, 2005 ok thanks. so the more is better for ur head/eyes etc. but what runs smooother for game? Lower or higher?
Baron Hurlothrumbo IIX 0 Posted March 27, 2005 higher is smoother
llauma 0 Posted March 27, 2005 Mostly it all depends on what refresh rate your eyes are used to. 75Hz is good enough for me but I know people who can't stand it 'cause they are used to 100Hz but on anotherhand I know people who'll have no problem with 60Hz. shadow 6 Posted March 27, 2005 ok thanks. so the more is better for ur head/eyes etc. but what runs smooother for game? Lower or higher? Hgher refresh is always better on CRTs (read bastler's explanation). The refresh rate does not affect your in-game fps unless you have vertical sync enabled. If you have vsync enabled and set your monitor to 60Hz, then you will never get more than 60fps in the game. Personally I never use vsync and I've never noticed these "tearings" that many websites talk about. I don't even know what to look for. Like bastler say, go with a LCD that have DVI. Two reasons: 1) Better overall image-quality 2) Alot better image-quality when not running in the native resolution of your LCD-monitor (and you get antialiasing for free at no perfomance cost
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted March 27, 2005 for me OFP doesnt run at 85Hz when I play in 1600x1200. Thats realy unfortunate. A few days ago I therefore decided to chose a slightly smaller resolution to be able to play at 85Hz. It realy is much healthier for your eyes. Why? Because I know that we play many of the nght mission with light turned off in our rooms. Playing that at 60Hz realy is a long-term-eye-killer!
der bastler 0 Posted March 27, 2005 Since last year I want to buy a new monitor+vga combo... Any suggestions for a video graphics adapter with multiple DVI-I out (Nvidia favoured because of driver quality) and a 19" flat screen with pivot mechanic?
shadow 6 Posted March 27, 2005 Since last year I want to buy a new monitor+vga combo... Any suggestions for a video graphics adapter with multiple DVI-I out (Nvidia favoured because of driver quality) and a 19" flat screen with pivot mechanic? All Ge-force cards have atleast one DVI-connection. I'm using a GF6800gt and a Samsung 193T. I recomend any of the new Samsungs with the new pixel-warranty (one defect pixel and you get on warranty). If you look at any other brand chances are high Samsung made the LCD-panel for it btw but only they themselves have the zero defect pixel warranty (on some models). Interesting, my choice @ local dealer was a SyncMaster 193P. Are there any differences to the T model?
shadow 6 Posted March 27, 2005 If I remember correctly the P-model is one generation newer where the only difference is 1000:1 instead of 750:1 contrast ratio. Same response-time. Don't take my word for it. But anyway, if it is covered by Samsung's new pixel-warranty then it is the monitor of my choice if I were you.
lee_h._oswald 0 Posted March 27, 2005 I am using the... Gainward PowerPack! Ultra/1960 XP, TV-DVI-DVI, Golden Sample. ...together with two: Samsung SyncMaster 172X Nice hardware, top quality. MfG Lee
denoir 0 Posted March 27, 2005 TFT monitors have recently seriously dropped in price and increased in performance. I'm looking at buying a new box soon and throw out my 19" CRT. I'm probably going to go for two Benq 20.1" TFT's. They're not too expensive (~900€/piece) and have a nice response time (16 ms). What I havn't quite decided yet on is a graphics board. My basic requirements are dual DVI output and some form of VIVO interface. There should be a fairly good GPU on it and a decent amount of memory would be nice. Any suggstions? wheres my rabbit ? 10 Posted March 27, 2005 Hgher refresh is always better on CRTs (read bastler's explanation). The refresh rate does not affect your in-game fps unless you have vertical sync enabled. Personally I never use vsync and I've never noticed these "tearings" that many websites talk about. I don't even know what to look for. i was under the impression that verticle sync locked your fps to half of your refresh rate so at 60hz you wont get more than 30 fps. the tearing is more noticeable in the corridors of games like halflife because the image is being rendered faster than the monitor is displaying so when you turn your mouse from side to side vertical lines (corners of walls, pillars )apear to break up slightly as if cut in 3 or 4 places.people playing these faster cs and halflife type shooters tend have Vsync turned off to get the most fps posible.hl2 looks much better with Vsync on (evereything is much more solid)but there a performance hit and you need a high refresh rate to get a decent framerate. but because of the natural enviroment of OFP its not really noticable at all ,unless you go into a forest on everon(or somewhere like the big city on tonal) and start waving your mouse from side to side
shadow 6 Posted March 29, 2005 i was under the impression that verticle sync locked your fps to half of your refresh rate so at 60hz you wont get more than 30 fps. If we were talking TV-lines I'd agree, but the PC updates whole-picture, not half-picture. The short explanation: even and odd lines are updated separately so a 50Hz image on a TV will give you 25fps because it need two periods to update the whole picture (both even and odd lines). You can try it out. Choose any game you can enable vsync and that your computer manages to get more than 60fps in and set your monitor refresh to 60Hz. Thanks for explaining the tearing. Now that I think what you mean I think I've noticed it in Doom3 and indoor in FarCry. To me its nothing I really pay attention to so it does'nt bother me.
