D3D8.DLL crash to desktop

Recommended Posts

Had a crash to desktop today upon this library. It's part of the "Windows XP Application Compatibility" update. Anyone else experienced this by now and has a hint on this DirectX core file (5.1.2600.15 dated 12/6/2001)?

It happens sporadic. Had only main EXE errors from time to time before, but now it's this library. Can't clearly reproduce it to track it. The original DLL is still available in an uninstall folder but it looks like more DirectX libs have been replaced.

Uninstalled the "XP Compatibility Fix" and guess what - played over 3 hours on a dedicated server now with lotsa custom missions. No problems. Seems this fix breaks more than it actually fixes.

Will watch stability over a period of time now, but I guess that fix is bad. smile.gif

As I have yet to savor Windows XP (thank the heavens!), could you please give me some details of exactly what the "XP Compatibility Fix" is. Is it Microsoft's? What is it supposed to do? Is there a URL with general info on this fix?

Much appreciated.

Yes and some other old games. It's stated "important update" in german Windows XP and nags you each time you don't download it.
