Running OFP with a firewall

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I was trying to figure out how i can run my EZ firewall and OFP, whenever i launch a program that wants to access the net it asks me if its ok. The problem with OFP is that i am already in game when i try to launch multiplayer, this results in my comp freezing.

I did a search and didnt find much to help out, does anyone know of a way to get this to work without me having to shutdown my firewall whenever i want to play OFP MultiPlayer?

EZ Firewall is similar to Zone Alarm in the way it works.

Thanks for any help smile_o.gif

What I used to do with Zone Alarm was this (probably easier ways, but anyhow...)

1. Boot up my PC

2. Wait until Zone Alarm had autostarted and I was online

3. Turn off Zone Alarm manually

4. Fire up OFP and go to online multiplayer

5. ALT+TAB back to desktop, and fire up Zone Alarm again

6. Zone Alarm would pop up it's window noticing that "OFP" was accessing the web, and trying to act as a server

7. I would tell Zone Alarm to allow OFP to access the web and act as a server, and to remember these settings

8. ALT+TAB back into OFP and play away, hopefully never to be frozen again

Of course, if you use different EXE files for OFP (i.e. CWC 1.46, OFPR 1.96, FDF, Y2K, EECP etc.) you will have to repeat the process for each one.

Might be better to read the help files for your firewall program and learn to to grant programs access ahead of time.  wink_o.gif

Two pretty easy solutions spring to mind, run Opf windowed so you can see both your desktop and Opf, start an MP session and you should be able to see the firewall popup boxes and deal with them, once your MP sessions is started quit Opf and remove -windowed from your shortcut. http://www.theavonlady.org/theofpfaq/install/windowed.htm

The other is to set up Opf as an allowed application before you start it, not familiar with EZ Firewall so I can't tell you exactly but it seems there's some kind of "program control" section, there should be something like add or new that lets you add a new program to the allowed/accepted list smile_o.gif

Thanks guys, i did go over the help files and as usual there was no help  crazy_o.gif

EZ Firewall does not allow me to grant permissions before launching any programs.

But, you guys both made excellent suggestions and i will try it out tonight. Thanks  biggrin_o.gif
