Specular highlight BUG or FEATURE?

let's develop what's in the title :

When i set some points of a p3d with "on surface" property, once binarized and materials properly defined for all textures, the model doesnt show any specular highlights at all.

If i replace the "on surface" with say, "keep height" or another property specular highlights work again.

Bug or "feature" ?
