PC Problems (graphics :( )

Recommended Posts

like i've said before about those little pock marks on opf, this problem has now gone into all my other games.

heres my system:

athlon 1.4

256mb DDr ram

a top quality ASUS mother board with on board sound (dunno model)

a top quality monitor (21")

basically a good all round system but like i said the problem is graphical, my video card is the ASUS v8200 deluxe geforce3. i've tried using the latest drivers, tried using older drivers, tried using the drivers that came in the box - no change at all

i tried using directx 8.0 instead of 8.1 - problem much worse (big blue lines forming boxes, that are split diagonally and the pock marks).

opf check doesn't work so i dunno if its something to do with installations. system says my card is working fine. I've opened up the tower, everything is plugged in, no dust, everything seems to be running fine.

i'm running at 32bit 1600x1200 display, and run my games at 1024x768

i would fdisk but i've lost this guide i had and don't want to f it up even more (anyone have a site that could help me with fdisking?)

What OS are you using? If you're talking about using fdisk, I assume it's an MS OS.

If you're using Win98, switch to 2000 or XP.

I would format if it's not too much trouble, that will start you back at square one. I had to format 3 times before I could get OFP running perfectly, but boy was it worth it.

Using hardware T&L? 32-bit color? Turn everything down low or off, then start re-enabling graphical effects one by one until you hit your problem, if possible. Also, try setting your desktop resolution to the same as OFP, just to eliminate that variable. I run both at 1024x768 and it's fine.

If you can (I realize this is a long shot), try to swap another GeForce 3 in and see if it has the same problem. That will tell you if its the card or your system.

Sorry I can't help more, these are just suggestions.

Are you insane?! wow.gif

Win98 is _still_ the de facto gaming OS. WinME is plain terrible. Win2k has lots of problems with gaming, although as a workstation OS it's superior to previous Windozes. I don't know about XP, but given MS's history of bugs and security holes in their releases, I wouldn't upgrade to XP yet.

So, stick with Win98, or if you feel lucky or adventurous, go for XP. But for f**cks sake, ME is awful and Win2k is simply not a gaming OS.

(Oh, what do I think is a good OS, then? FreeBSD! http://www.freebsd.org)

I'm afraid I'm gonna have to disagree with the guy above me. My experience on Windows XP has only been brief as I've only had it a month but already it hammers my previous operating systems (Win98 and WinME) when it comes to gaming.

When I installed it straigh away I noticed an increase of 10fps on all my games, plus Windows XP makes better use of your RAM. Flash Point runs a lot better through XP if u ask me.

I have an AMD Athlon 1.4ghz and Geforce III.

I have had Win98, Win ME, Win 2000 and now finaly Win XP pro.

Win XP is the best and most stable OS I ever tried, win 98 and win ME are useless. Win 2000 is stable but it can crash and there are some problems with drivers for gfx cards and games. I have had Win XP for almost 4 months now and Im pleased.

The only "bad" thing with XP is that it takes a lot more performance than the others. Thats because they have made a "good looking" appearance but thats easy to fix.

OFP is running smooth and nice at 1024x768x32, I can have higher res but its just so hard to see things then smile.gif

Finaly my system if anyone think thats important information.

AMD Thunderbird (Athlon) 1.4 GHz (CPU)

MSI K7t266 pro (motherboard)

512 MB DDR RAM

Asus V7700 Deluxe GF2 GTS 32 MB (gfx card)

Soundblaster Live! 5.1 .... something.... (soundcard)

That's strange -- I find it easier to see things at a higher resolution.

OFP scales the display output, the area you can see is the same regardless of the screen resolution. However, with a higher resolution, it is easier to snipe and pick out detail/aim at long ranges.
