Fully open houses

Recommended Posts

I was thinking about a way to avoid giving computers a vertice overdose whilst having fully open buildings (ie have access to all floors).

A possible way would be to only have the inside exist at all if someone opens up a room. ie. Houses mainly have all doors shut and windows shut with curtains drawn or shutters... shut.

If a door is opened or wall blasted apart then the room inside is exposed it is created for viewing. If the players go on door/window opening or wall blasting rampages then the neglected or empty room doors/windows shut or houses collapse/burn due to damage to preserve the pc's sanity (a bit like the body count other games have except with scenery). There only need to be as many rooms open as people playing for MP and maybe a couple extra for AI.

Before anyone compares the neccessity with the effort - if most rooms are generic (ie from a limited selection) then that would serve the purpose.

You would no longer know which storey has the hidden sniper until they open the window. If games become longer due to JIP then a weapons stash may be hidden on a floor or an armoured vehicle hidden in a closed garage.

Many many strategies open up.

Might as well use a very low lod, with textures on a slightly higher one that makes it look open. That way, you dont have a city full of buildings with closed windows.....

True, maybe one up from that would be having the window transparent still so you can see the person if they are in the middle and just have a back wall behind them until you get close enough to see more.
