I'm playing in veteran mode. I'm waiting for 1.40 and it's AI option to see if that makes things more reasonable. I haven't installed it myself. I'm providing it on The FAQ, just as the 1985.SQC file is available there, too. The original use for providing the 1985.SQC file to players was to bypass the annoying bug where you got bounced back to OFP's main menu after successfully completing a campaign mission and you had to replay the same mission several times till you could move on to the next one.
